I made a small business doing this. I would drive up and down alleyways looking for discarded furniture. Repair and refinish them and put them out in the front yard for sale. I made some good money doing it. Although it was just a hobby. I enjoyed doing it. Taking someone's trash and making it into something desirable again. OK. Long story short. Many years have gone by and I find myself in dire shorts. I'm homeless and depressed. Staying in a homeless shelter and required to attend a Christian education program... One day a man came in looking for someone who could restore antique furniture. Me! Me! Me! I said. That was six years ago. I now have a place of my own and a job I can count on. I'm 60 now and ready to go on disability. Many health issues... I am so thankful to my boss for giving me a chance.

I really have learned patience from watching him. Oftentimes on old furniture, at some point someone has inserted tiny nails to attempt to shore up a joint up that really needed to be glued and clamped. Those little devils often have very small heads and I would get so frustrated trying to remove them. Watching him just painstakingly using needle nose pliers and taking time taught me something valuable. I don’t have tons of experience, but gradually I am having more success. It is very satisfying to see a piece of furniture take on a new life.

I just watched a video in which someone took a gorgeously detailed, burled piece and proceeded to paint it up and distress it. It was so depressing to see a vintage piece weighed down by heavy matte paint. Fortunately, up popped a recommended video from Dashner so I knew I'd be able to relax and watch a restoration artist who appreciates wood and allows a piece to breathe and remain tied to its history and intent.

I would place the side "shoes" back on and the front middle one. I would fake the one in the middle back with wood filler or whatever was handy to make it thicker and paint it with metallic paint to look like the rest. The top is hideous after you made the piece look so stunning. Anything would be better than plastic. Including plain black paint, tearing out the plastic and chancing it to have a half decent underlayer of wood and working with the trim height accordingly to fit decrease of top thickness, or tear plastic off and replace it with leather or poly-leather which is very economical.

Great rescue piece! I really like the slightly darker color snd richness with the stain and the original hardware. 👍

Since the edge of the desktop is solid wood, it would be interesting to remove the laminate, shave down the middle section about an eighth of an inch, and glue on some vinyl oil cloth.

I just found my first project. A solid wood coffee table that someone was throwing out. It needs some minor repairs but I am going to give it a go to see if I can redo it.

I knew you were going to use candlelight. The desk turned out great. Instead of refinishing the top with a walnut veneer, would you consider a new wood grain finish laminate or other finish for the top? Or do you want to keep the desk as original as possible?

Really appreciate your attention to detail, and keeping the wood as natural as possible.
Love the feel of wood, the natural grain and texture it exhibits. As someone else commented, I was so pleased you handled it the way you did 👍😊 the desk has a new lease on life. Thank you for not just slapping paint on it. 🙏
