  • A short account of my visit to Saltburn Cliff Lift on Sunday 23 July 2017. The oldest operating water-balanced cliff railway in the world. Although not strictly a narrow gauge railway, it gains a place in my quest (to visit all the narrow gauge railways of 12" gauge + in the UK and Ireland) for its antiquity and its character.     In Valparaíso Chile, there are many of these funiculars, in fact, there are one of the icons of the city

    Thanks for sharing the information Rik. I agree with your reasons to include these very interesting railways. As I recall there is a similar railway on the south coast,- Ramsgate or Margate, that I went on back in the 50s; don't know if it's still operating.

      One of my favourite memories as a lad from 1950’s holidays so it’s good to get the technical explanation of how it operates. Thanks.
