  • Logan actually turned two years old back in May but I never did get around to making a video for it, or for his first birthday either. So here is Logan from one week old to just over two years old.
    Logan's story:
After having to leave Alianovna behind at our previous farm (since she belonged to our boss), we decided to buy our own pet calves. While I was at a local dairy farm buying a Jersey x Murray Grey calf for my sister, the owner mentioned she also had a Jersey bull calf that had just been born. Jersey bulls aren't really sought after and he was destined for the veal truck. How could I say no to taking him home five days later, knowing what his future would hold otherwise?
Logan's first few months weren't that great. He got chronic pneumonia and an infection around his ear tag, which resulted in stunted growth and a permanently droopy ear. But he was a happy boy. He was very calm, nothing worried him. He liked to chase Freya around. When the vets came to clean his infected ear, they commented on how well trained he was. He didn't need to be put in the yards or anything, I just had him haltered and held his lead and he barely flinched.
In his two years of life, Logan's worn halters, flymasks, rugs, a bareback pad, and a lunge roller, and ridden in two stock trucks and one horse float. None of those things caused him any concern or hesitation at all. Usually when you first halter a calf there's some head tossing or freezing but Logan walked with me leading him like he'd always done it.
Having him be so calm about everything means he's pretty much impossible to herd anywhere. If he gets out of his paddock, I have to halter him to lead him back or lure him with food because he just doesn't get scared by anyone yelling at him or waving their arms.
Losing Stormfly so suddenly made me realize the fragility of life. I'd been taking Logan for granted, just assuming I'd have him for many years yet since Jerseys live between 15-20 years on average. But it drove home that fact that it's not guaranteed. I need to make the most of the days we have together. So fingers crossed in the next few weeks I can start riding him.
