Aston Villa were playing their football in the Championship as recently as 2019. Yet now, under Unai Emery, they are playing European football and challenging the Premier League’s Big Six.
How have they done it? How have they stabilised the club off the field, and improved it on the field?
Ryan Baldi writes. Craig Silcock illustrates.

Fulham played a full part in our turnaround, beat us in the playoff final thank god which helped see the end of Tony Xia and Steve Bruce and then a short few years later thrashed us 3-0 which led to Gerrard getting sacked that very night.
Love you Fulham 😘

two classy clubs. utv
I feel the same about your club. Always wanted you guys in the pl. You can't have two European cups and not be playing day in day out against the best teams in England. Nottingham belong in the Premier league
The Pau Torres and Diaby signings are massive!
Even as a relatively young football I feel like people forget how big Villa we're as recent as the late 2000s they were at least as big/competitive as Spurs.
And unlike those North London bottlejobs including Arsenal, they are European champions (UCL).

They saw it coming as always, Tifo Football never gave a faulty prediction.
The first rule of a successful Aston Villa Football Club, you dont talk about a successful Aston Villa Football Club. I've been quite happy for us to fly under the radar of the media. If we do secure silverware and/or a better league position than last year, it will be hard to hide away.
I'm just enjoying watching the lads play well and theres a particularly special place in my heart for McGinn at the moment, empitomised by his performance against Fulham recently. I'd like to see his efforts rewarded by lifting a trophy with his time at the Villa.
Been experiencing this with Arsenal this season. We're now expected to perform perfectly every week whereas last season the fans were for the most part just enjoying the process and taking each game for what it was.
@@Nico-ss9lrI think that’s because you have been on the up for the last three years. And now you should be expecting these results. As a United fan, it’s nice to see a club that isn’t city doing well.
Ings was pretty good for us. Everyone underperformed with Gerrard but he still did decent. Had a really decent 2 months under Emery too.
however, he already got Ollie Watkins at his disposal. Not to mention Ollie Watkins is the main CF at Villa moving forward
@@johnlau6749 Emery did actually want to keep Ings I’m pretty sure he said he was disappointed he left. I think Ings chose to leave because Watkins was clearly Emery’s main striker.
@@GuitarJammerJohn but there is no point for Ings to be disappointed tho. Like we saw already, Watkins is the main and long-term CF moving forward. Watkins already scored around 11 goals already this season so far
@@johnlau6749 that's not my point I meant Emery was disappointed Ings chose to leave of course Watkins was the starter that's why Ings left. But I think Emery did want to keep Ings he's a good player to bring on at the end of the game if you need a goal and he likes to have depth in all positions.
@@GuitarJammerJohn what's the point keep him moving forward tho
This is an excellent vid! My only note is that surely Kamara has to be mentioned as one of, if not the best, transfers of the NSWE ownership. How an average at best Villa at the time pulled off a free transfer for him is beyond me.
It’s the only thing Gerrard did that was a good job! Same with Bruce getting McGinn for 2 mil!
@@nathanmoore7120 Apparently, the club were tracking Kamara before Gerrard came to the club. But, Kamara may have been swayed to join by the superstar name of one of England's best midfielders. Shame his on-field talent as a player, never translated well to his off-field management.
@@nathanmoore7120tbf I would say also signing Digne has eventually turned out pretty well too though I wasn’t sure about him at first and Carlos hasn’t been terrible just seems to be more of a solid backup.
Kamara on a free is outrageous. But Konsa for 12mil, Luiz for 16mil, Emi Martinez for 20mil, Ramsey as an academy player, all impressive first teamers developed at the club.
It's a great time to be a Villa fan. Class video as always Tifo. Up The Villa
I hope it lasts honestly. Not a Villa fan but they've got really good supporters and it's a grand old club. Good to have them back and doing well in the league.
I started supporting Villa back in 2005 and seeing them relegated crushed me personally but seeing them back in the top flight again brings me happiness
The Tyrone Mings quote was way too honest 😂
It shows when the entire club is on board. Everything clicks. Clubs like Brighton, Brentford, Villa, Newcastle, West Ham, have all shown incredible growth over the years. You get everything together, and you can really push far. Yes, I know money is involved, but people don't realize how massively coaching goes into it. These clubs have got the best managers for them, and if they continue making good progress, they'll be well established for years to come. Some more so than others yes, but its still a good look.
Sir Alex predicted Villa's rise at the start of the season.
he also predicted david moyes to be a succesful utd manager!
@@lennon1482Moyes has more European trophies than Arsenal.
you got me there, son@@lennon1482
@@anotheryoutubeuserNo he doesn't. He has one 3rd tier European trophy. Arsenal have two 2nd tier European trophies.
They are a grand old club, and one that I always categorise with Spurs and Everton. There was a period where you could throw a blanket over their league positions, usually just behind the top four. Then Spurs improved past both as their fortunes waned.
One thing for sure is that having a history and fan base isn’t enough - you have to earn the success. What this video shows is it starts from the top down. Through the correct ownership model, the right leadership team, developing a football philosophy then investing in a manager and players who fit the model.
The good thing about the video is it shows where veering away from this model (the Coutinho purchase) didn’t quite work, but how they got back on track - with their 2023 purchases.
Man United could learn a lot from Villa’s approach.
"It's time to start taking Aston Villa seriously." They are playing some really nice ball. Not just sitting back like many smaller clubs do against the "big" teams, they are taking it to them, good for them.
As a generic football fan, they are great to currently watch. As a Birmingham City fan, it is sickening how good they look currently😂
ROOOOONEY 😂
As a lifelong Villa fan. I hope Rooney gets you guys up. We want the derbys back. UTV .... and the bluenoses 😂😂
Yeah there is fierce rivalry but I want them derbies back. Good luck for the season.
Unai Emery really brought some fresh ideas to the club
It's funny none of the comments here mentions Emi Martinez, probably the main reason why they are in second place. Without him they would be in the middle of the standings.
I was surprised about it too! He was important on clear sheets in several matches specially against Manchester City
As an Arsenal fan happy for emery 👏🏽
Lots of Arsenal fans say this. Emery was the right man at the wrong time. Even Fergie couldn't have followed Wenger

For some reason, I can never recall jack grealish playing against villa while he is at city
He dived and 'won' a penalty for City against Villa

You have to give Gerrard some credit in this transition. His appointment was a step change in the belief and excitement around the club on the rise again, and improved the squad depth as a result. Of course, we're now seeing the difference a proper coach makes!
Kamara needs to be mentioned, not only in the pitch as a vital part of the midfield. His injuries have been big misses.
But also a rare bit of good news in the Gerrard era, brought in on a free but now a French international. Easily a £50m player now.
Not to mention the added value players like Watkins, Luiz and Ramsay, Konsa and Martinez. Easily added £300m to the value of the squad in last 2 years.
"it's not gonna be easy, but why not?"
love that!
In the weeks since this video was published they defeated the champions and the top of the table!
Another great video.
I'd love a Spotify playlist of the music you use in your videos. Always so chilled out.
The December 2023 result against Man City really helps this video shine. Villa will be a problem this season!

Who's here after they beat city???
AS A CITY FAN, I'M BROKEN AND SHOCK AND BROKEN. WELL PLAY VILLA, WELL PLAY.
Watkins and other Aston Villa attackers were willing to implement Emery's high-pressing system, unlike the ones at Arsenal in 2019
And he got the personnel to do it like seriously David Luiz was brought in at Arsenal he's no ball playing Centre Half
Yeah Ozil and Aubameyang aren't pressing anything.
@@dennisgoatimer1079 David Luiz's ball-playing skills were quite good, but he made too many errors

Love this analysis, do one on Girona in la liga.
Ironic this was released before beating city and arsenal
this took you guys way too long to talk about considering how much you've been going on about newcastle and brighton over the past year while villa have been out performing all but a few teams in the whole league
As a toon fan there is no doubt with the set up and brilliant manager they have, Villa are also about to upset the septic 6. They are also doing it with great attacking football.
2:41 on New Years Day of his debut season Wesley was the victim of a horrendous tackle from Ben Mee (Google image it, the photo will make you wince) and his knee exploded. He didn’t kick a ball for nearly 18 months after that tackle and when he finally did it was off the bench in the 88th min, something he managed to do three or four times before leaving the club. He’d had a slow start to his career but twenty games isn’t enough to judge him on when his career was so obviously ruined by serious injury.
Wesley suffered a horrendous injury, £100 mil wasn't spent that second season - just Grealish money reinvested.
Otherwise great video
I agree. That tackle from Ben Mee derailed Wesley's career. He hasn't been the same since then.
I think Tottenham will have great succes by signing Johan Lange from Aston Villa. He has been amazing at both Copenhagen and Villa
you’re obviously not a villa fan, most of the successful signings have not been Lange’s decisions.
Aston Villa's recent success on and out the pitch is the result of one thing (Which many clubs like Man United, Chelsea and others fail) a good and effective club management
As an Arsenal Fan more apprecaition for Unai and see why we picked him up. We really tend to hire very data driven highly tactical managers. That is Wenger's legacy and hopefully what we always do
Beautiful
Aston Villa have smashed it this season, hope they do well in the champions league
I stand to earn a fair few quid if Villa end top 4. It probably will pay for what I lost last season when I thought Hull City would get get promoted following a very interesting summer 2022 transfer window.
I fkn love this channel
Short and sweet answer Emery, Great video though
Same manner in how Brighton has done it. Solid core at the heart and 100 mill didn't hurt from grealish
What software do you use to create these videos?
prob AE &/or Premierpro. The lightning at 4:58 is the saber plugin I think.
Us Villa fans are just happy playing in Europe. But my God if we make the champions league. The scenes!!!! 🤩🥳

@@JohnnyLouisXIX Arsenal
We have the distinction of being the team they beat to win it. 😅 it's nice to Villa playing so well, especially for all the abuse Emery got from the Arsenal fans.
arsenal and mk dons are also the only two teams to cheat for their position in the football hierarchy. not sure any of their achievements can be counted
Unai spending the whole IB studying Ange, its over for Spurs already.
Now they are at No.2 position in the league😊
Tifo Footbal Jinx 🔜
Man United need to take note of the structure above Emery
PS Villa need to keep Luiz at all costs
We do he's just a player you can't really replace although not many clubs would spend what we're asking for especially not Arsenal the club that are linked with him
I expected some more tactical insight to be honest.
I also think people overrate Villa a bit. Yes, they are much better than they were when they were in the Championship. But I remember Villa in the 2000s finishing 7th too, and nobody was singing their praises about how they would give the top 4 a hard time.
They have impressively beaten Man City recently, but if they want top 4 we'll have to see them make moves in the market very soon.
Credit where credit is due, you mentioned nothing about how Dean Smith got 10 straight wins when he took over in the 2nd half of the season in the Championship to give us an outside chance at playoffs.
Wesley played a half season then had a major injury which put him out for close to 2 years and never recovered 😂How can you say that’s a poor signing from Aston Villa? Danny Ings was great for Villa but Unai came in and didn’t want 2 main strikers. He only played at Villa for 6 months or so. I’m curious as to why you brushed over Steven Gerard’s tenure at Aston Villa I’m sure that’s worth a mention of how out of his depth he was.
Overall decent video but quite lacking.
I watched some of Gerrard's tenure at Villa, actually not that great. Tbh I expect Villa to be in Europa under Gerrard tho
So you saying westley was a good signing then? £22m 21 games 5 goals😂😂 yes he got injured but it was still a poor signing. 0 goals in 13 at Stoke btw
They didn’t say “poor signing”, they said “high profile disappointment”.
How can you make a video about Aston Villa and not mention the Sheffield goal that was not given that at the end turned out to be the reason why Aston Villa stayed in the Prem?
Arsenal fans trolled Emery. Emery then went to Villareal and won the Europa and returned back to EPL while Arsenal still hasn't won anything significant
He might as well win the Conference League with Villa and Arsenal may land up bottling the league too if they don't remain consistent.
Dont forget Aston Villa won the league title as early as 1890s itself.
Anyone after win to city and arsenal in same week??
How’d they get the money
Last time villa played good was under Martin O'Neill... It was a great team...
Anyone else think the background music sounds like cave chaos 😅
i’m really glad villa are back to playing well, back in the 2000s they were like spurs (not an insult!)
So Emery is one of the only, if not the only manager in the Premier League. With the rest being coaches. It is rare to have a manager these days since most clubs have adopted the European system which delegated responsibilities of management to several roles.
Yea it's quite rare it's even rarer to basically have all sporting staff be the managers guys like Emery has with us.

Unai Emery is a fantastic manager, it might sound hyperbolic if I say, I might be seeing the "Atletico Madrid" of Premier League.

Who’s seeing this after villa beat Man City?
I wouldn’t say Ings is a disappointment by any stretch. He was one of my favourite players.
They had good players only problem was someone to polish them
I can't believe we threw £12m in the bin for Ings haha
my operational crystal ball predicts Villa would face Fiorentina of Italy on their way to winning the UEFA Conference League cup!
Good ebening to Manchester! 😂
Getting £12M for Danny Ings is truly an accomplishment.
Ended up at £15m thanks to the extra £3m that was triggered when West Ham stayed up!
Dean Smith!!!! He bought the right players who were not only good but smart enough to take on information to get better. The core of emerys team are smith signings.
Danny Ings hasn't been great for Villa, don't get me wrong, but nobody deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Wesley 😂
This channel is the definition of reactionary
It's Unai Emery that's the answer
Their success is all about Super John McGinn

2) let him take a controlling stake
