    Thanks for this review! I've been struggling to find a good video out there, but many miss important aspects. However, I am quite satisfied with this one! Very nice level of details!

    Got a brand new one for less than 600€, shipping included. That's better value than the Niche at this point, even without thinking about all the extra costs for shipping from the UK to France.

    I wonder if Mahlkönig will bring in a SD or GBW-version. This one seems very cheap compared with their commercial machines. Would love something twice or three times the price.

    Excellent and as per usual, informative, straightforward and concise! I was on the fence and even though I'm a single batch (me and the wife) filter brewer (Technivorm Moccamaster), I have decided to take the plunge on this beauty! BTW, I've seen here on youtube a Korean made individual blow-up hopper for single dose with follow through weight and built-in bellows! Don't understand the currency conversion though! Anyhow,...greetings from Bushwick Brooklyn, NY, USA. Home of more cafes and coffee shops per square kilometer than anywhere else mate!

    I’ve had a Niche Zero for a year now and I just can’t get my head around having a hopper on a home grinder now. It’s not a fashion trend as some have dismissed it, single dose really is a better way at home. So now I'm frankly surprised at anyone coming out with a new home grinder with a hopper. Mahlkonig, the king of the grinder brands, you'd think would have sussed where the home market was now.

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Před 2 lety +5

      Hi George, I'd agree the Niche certainly changed how Espresso is ground at home ... I do believe we'll see many more single dosers coming out from brands as this approach becomes more popularised. Many espresso brewers are still making espresso without Scales ... so to take that leap and not only single dose but weigh ins & outs I'd suggest is a rather big leap. Than what if you're truly making more than 4 or 5 coffees back to back ... I think I'd prefer a grind on demand to a single doser

    • @george_taylor
      @george_taylor Před 2 lety +4

      @@AlternativeBrewing sure and I've kept my old Macap grinder with hopper (65mm flat burrs) for the rare times, like school fund raiser event, when I'm making multiple back to back coffees. I'd say that the vast majority of home grinders are making 1 or 2 cups a day and therefore the domestic grinder really shouldn't be a hopper grinder. I'm not advocating the Niche Zero. There's plenty of single dosers on the market now so plenty of choice.

    • @zlutyzakaznik679
      @zlutyzakaznik679 Před 2 lety +2

      You'd say but what if the numbers are different. I make from 4 to 5 shots a day only for myself and that's without equally espresso-thirsty girlfriend, family and friends. So, I have no interest in single-dosing grinders and love my Fiorenzato F4 Nano V2.

    • @george_taylor
      @george_taylor Před 2 lety +2

      @@zlutyzakaznik679 I've got another beef with the hopper. Pop corning. You need to keep a hopper full otherwise you end up with inconsistencies in grind size when it runs close to empty. That's fine for a Cafe but not for being at home. I'd expect most home users, like I did, didn't realise that and wondered why they sometimes got a weird result when in fact it was the hopper 's content (totally non-intuitive!) that was the problem.

    • @zlutyzakaznik679
      @zlutyzakaznik679 Před 2 lety +1

      @@george_taylor While popcorning may be an issue if the final layers of beans "kiss the burrs" anything between 80 and 120/150 g in the hopper is just fine for me and the results are consistent. Yes, the constant pressure is required but is more often than not overvalued in terms of hopper’s fulness.

      No, you can leave it in sleep .. you'll have to press the activate button twice to start grinding. .. once to wake it up , than once to get it to grind 😀

      Yes - it's not recommended as a commercial grinder - but if small, you mean perhaps 10-15 pourover a day - this will be fine 👌

    I find their review to this machine is a bit biased.
    How can I put this .. I saw a review for anfim on this channel, the way they speak about mahlkonig is all superficial and how good the design is and how quiet it is, never making a remake on how good the grind is or their take on the extraction of the coffee from this machine. But when you see the anfim review, they talk about that the machine is not practical for different grind settings if you need to change quickly. They spoke good about the machine if you're gonna set it for back to back espresso setup or filter for example .. no doubt about that .. but those small notes about the reviews makes you get the vibe that they almost have a contact with mahlkonig to never make a real review about their machines. As a coffee expert you don't care about the design as much as you care about a full honest review about the machine performance rather on how it looks. With that kind of videos and review, the only way to get a fully decent review is to buy one yourself and try it. Is that the point of the review ?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Před 2 lety +2

      Well said - I can honestly understand where you're coming from. It's easily understood we sell the machines we're reviewing. Every machine/brewer has nuances that make it not perfect for one consumer or another - I try not to nitpick at the small details - that understandingly could be a deal-breaker for some (and I'm always happy to discuss missed details in the comments) as if I approached it in a way that's looking for errors, this would be giving it more of an overall impression the product is not designed well - and is rather not a good product. We're not going to lambaste a product we sell - as if it is truly a bad product - we most likely wouldn't sell it in the first place- as it doesn't make good sense to. All the products available will operate in the way in which they are marketed to do.
      The majority of our videos - albeit not in the true sense of a 'consumer review' - are based on giving the viewer a knowledgeable understanding of the capacity, limitations and operation of the equipment. I have attempted to make all grinder reviews in a similar format, all Espresso machines the same etc - so it does make it easier to watch videos side by side and compare - but over time - there's no doubt been deviations in the formats from learning what viewers respond to, and want to see.
      So I hear you - if there's more of something you'd like to see in the videos we put up, please let me know - and I can begin to incorporate these. Kind regards, Josh

    I don't understand the hopper, retention and non portafilter fitting dosing cup. those 3 are the most important things for a home grinder.
    -no hopper more than 100g
    -close to zero retention
    -58mm dosing cup

    Just received my Mahlkonig X54. Purchased directly from Mahlkonig. I was slightly skeptical considering it is made in China, but I was depending on the Mahlkonig name to produce a quality grinder. WRONG! Cannot calibrate it. Followed the directions to the letter. The adjustment knob will not move the burrs. So frustrated and angry right now. As I now find that this is apparently a known issue, this X54 should never have passed inspection to be shipped. At the FINEST setting, the shot spurts through the portafilter like a broken fire hydrant. HORRIBLE.

    Hello! I recently purchased X54 but I have an issue. Same coffee, same period for grinding but different result based on the weight on two scales. I am not speaking about single dose mode tests but a result coming from full hopper. Any ideas? Just tried it now for the 10th time. First test after not being used for hours - 18 grams for 18.5 seconds. Second test immediately after the first one - less than 16 grams for the same time. 🫣

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Timed dosing is accurate - but not always precise. The difference in individual bean weights can influence the end results of timed dosing. Often, you can have variances of half a gram or more. 2g is a concern though - and it may point to some retention or a blockage in the Grind chamber / chute.
      Turning the grinder off, removing the hopper and cleaning out the chamber/chute may resolve the inconsistency 👌
