What a wonderful old Cat. I think you really scored on this purchase. This old jewel has had some good care. She will treat you well for a lot of years.
Hey Chris, throughly enjoyed listening in on your discussion with DP on his podcast. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on all your hard work paying off.
Where can you find this at ?
@@zackm66722 have a look for ‘a few points from perfect’ CZcams channel. Mike from dirt perfect has some great interviews on there.
Impressive how easily that starts when it’s cold. Got lucky there!
I think you sure made a good decision buying the D6. It's been well looked after. The transmission fluid, I agree with you it's fine to leave it as is if no smell of burning, color looked good.
Well there you can exhale on that purchase. Doesn't it just make ya smile when nothing was covered by a new coat of paint. I agree with your decision to hold of the rest of the fluid changes. Would look at again at 50hrs or sooner? Either way you got a mighty nice machine.
Didn't see any comments on it yet but the red hydraulic oil is sold by CAT. They have had a couple different colors over the years but I believe they are on red now. Funny story... When we first got our new 239 we thought someone put off road in the hydraulic tank. We actually put locks on the hydraulic tanks because of it... Always learning new things.
yeah i just looked it up as well and caterpillar adds a red dye to it so that its easier to find leaks.
Has the New Dozer been Named yet ? That is one Good looking Yellow Machine that says, “Let’s GO Work”. 😬👍
Whoever owned that dozer took great care of it. You couldn’t ask for it to start better. You made an excellent purchase. It has a lot of work left in it.
That’s one nice dozer Chris, started great after a cold night too! I was amazed how good it started especially for a Diesel engine, I guess when you have good batteries it makes all the difference brother! And knowing you, you always service your equipment first! That’s awesome because I’ve seen people buy a piece of used equipment and jump on it and go, which doesn’t make sense to me! You can’t trust if it was serviced before you got it! That’s one thing I like is how you maintain your equipment Chris! Can’t wait to see this bad boy push some dirt brother! I hope you get Betty revived soon too! It’s good to see you getting your fleet together though my friend and looking good!
I was surprised at how well it started too. Cat engines are notoriously cold hearted.
That cat is ready to go to work.
CAT sells red dye to put in hydraulic oil to tell the difference if your machine develops a leak vs trans oil or torque converter or whatever.
I grew up on a Cat. Brings a tear to my eye. I grew up helping my grandpa on his. And he had the same model. We had built a cage on it out of cattle panels for when he cleared out brush for building house pads. Brings back memories. That’s why I love this channel.
I note how all the fasteners are still there, and all those guards are still in place. Someone took care of this machine. Always nice to get a used machine that really only needs a few small repairs to be work-ready. I loved your reaction at the auction when it fired right up and ran so nice.
Hi Chris, glad to see your business growing and doing well. Like your matinance videos to.
Thats a sweet cat I love the older machines no electronics just hand built steel and mechanical parts ....
That start-up is really awesome.
Always an education watching you service and maintain your equipment. Thanks for sharing this insightful video. Peace brother
That beast cranks over better than new equipment. You done good 😊
Every tool has a hammer end!
D6D good solid reliable dozer, decent productivity and fun to operate. And the price being right is just icing on the cake.
Consider sampling the oil from the hydraulic, transmission, and final drive compartments to be sure. Your Cat dealer will be about$15 each and knows exactly what to expect from D6D. Make sure to include the serial number, hours on the machine, and hours on the oil (if you know). Great vieo, thanks, and I imagine the D6 will be making money soon!
She sounds great! Didn't really hear her lug down when you put her under a heavy load. The power's there, and the only thing that might hold you back is traction. All in all, I'd say you got one heck of a deal. Congratulations... now go move some dirt!!! 😁
Get your self a old style screen door spring and raise it up closer to the grill
On my cats the Hydraulic oil is cat hydro advanced 10 which is clear but has added red die for troubleshooting, (the transmission is died blue)my hydraulic filters are stacked like that but there is a clip near the end of that long rod so the filters come out with the cap.
Cats looking good Chris.
The D6D I ran had a hinged Rad /Grill plate so easy to clean out the radiator . The hoses had a 2 pc system so when I blew a tilt hose, I could change it out side the Rad/Grill plate easy and fast without the huge cost of full length hoses. . Another thing I had was a roof on the ROP's (roll over protection) and my exhaust went through it. No smoke/ rain/ or snow in the face. Final drive oil looks good and same as the transmission. Good to go.
A little advice, extend the exhaust pipe a bit to ceiling height. You avoid a lot of exhaust and it gets a little quiet for you.
Dual chrome side pipes like a '67 Vette.
@@keepingdistance4404 ...and you'll have the ONLY D6 with Lakes Pipes... anywhere!! 🤣 I was about to head off to bed since it's about midnight here (Northern California coast). That gives me something to chuckle about for a while. When he was wandering through the auction yard he mentioned putting a chrome stack on something. Maybe he was serious!!??
Just wondering, why doesn't the exhaust go down below the dozer? Like in a car
@@rubenbraekman4515 I’d assume for simplicity
@@rubenbraekman4515 So you don't tear it off driving over limbs etc. Also it's hot, so rising, and you don't want to breathe it back in.
Nice CAT. dozer!! Glad she a good one for ya.
Looks like a nice machine........I'm sure someone else has mentioned it, but there is a magnetic screen for the trans under the floor plate. Careful how you put it back because it can be put in wrong. (Don't assume it's in right when you take it out)
There is also a screen in the bottom of the torque converter housing you should clean at some point when you have the belly pan off. It should drop a gallon, maybe two, of trans oil when you pull the plug. If you get 5 gallon that indicates a torque converter leaking and you might see overheating of on torque converter temp.
There are grease fittings on the short drive shaft between the torque converter and trans under the floor plate that often get overlooked. There is a fitting for the rad fan pulley also.
Final drives are probably ok to leave the oil a while.....If you drain it that will tell you if there are are any chunks laying in the bottom.
I'd watch the coolant to be sure it's not getting oil from one of the oil coolers or shows bubbles.
Oh, and if it's got one of the plastic air cleaner indicators just behind the air filter, make sure it's not leaking. Better still, throw it away and plug the hole.....they have a tendency to suck air and dust an engine. (There is a little felt plug in the hole for the indicator that's supposed to stop dirt but they're often missing or really dirty.)
You might want to make sure the sprocket bearings have good preload too.
I've fixed all this stuff and 1000 other things on my D6c.....
Great video! I would not change the final drives and transmission fluid until the next service interval...they look too good to drain out. For the new hydraulic hoses out the front of the machine, pick up some Outback Wrap to protect and contain them. I use Outback Wrap on all my farm equipment and they make an outstanding product! No, I'm not affiliated with the company just a happy customer!
WHY AM I STILL NOT WORKING FOR THIS GUY ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, BEST JOB EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Must be a good feeling when the engine comes on like flipping a light switch. That really is a clean old machine.
OK, so she doesn't have an enclosed cab with heat, air conditioning and a stereo, but she's got no ECM, no DEF, none of that other emissions stuff that breaks. Looking at the condition, I am inclined to believe in that 2200 hours. Going to enjoy watching and listening to this old Cat work.
When I was a young kiddo, we moved into a subdivision that was still being built. Late 70s. Machines like that one were the trick of the trade. Sometimes I'd wake up hearing those Cat dozers working. So hearing yours reminds me of those days.
That's a brilliant bit of kit you've bought there, Chris. Loved the artisanal bit of servicing too. Look close and it's clear your very measured and accurate in the methodology you use; you ought to have a go at operating a massive digger ;-)
Gitty up GOOOOO!!! I’ve NEVER had a CAT start that easy cold.
Another good video, with lots of good info on maintaining machinery. Interesting and enough detail to follow easily. Thanks.
We bought Sennobogen scrap material handlers and from factory they dye the hydraulic oil red.It makes it easier to find leaks.
If ever you have doubts about the condition of a lubricant, you can pull a small sample and have it tested by an oil analysis lab. Any of your equipment dealers you are familiar with can hook you up with how to get it done.
Most hydraulic fluid dyed red is R&O. IE: anti-Rust/anti-Oxidation, wont foam up easily and has a higher op temp with some anti-wear abilities.. IE:it's not the cheep shit 8) Someone loved that dozer for sure 8)
Case IH Hy-Trans Transmission oil as Red as well.
We buy Deere engine and hydraulic oil. They come out and fill our tanks when needed. They said it’s also dyed red to not confuse with engine oil
Good video, every time I see you on the dozer, your smile gets bigger and bigger.looks like your having all kinds of fun servicing the machine.keep doing what your doing 👍👍👍😎😎😎
I had one of those back in the mid 80s in NZ, good wee dozer. What I ended up doing was putting grease nipples in the bell cranks on the blade control linkage under the floor plate and near the fire wall , made the blade a lot easier to use, a squirt of grease every now and then does wonders. Also welded a plate from the LH brake pedal and the RH brake pedal so that by pushing between the two U applied both together instead of only one, much easier on brake wear specially in steep conditions where U need both brakes, saves wearing out one brake only.
I love crescent hammers…. and screwdriver chisel scrapers too.
Remember, never force anything. Get a bigger hammer.
Glow Plugs are activated by going opposite of CRANK.
We are awesomely glad you’re happy with the machine CNC equipment bought for you lol! We appreciate your post .
And the fleet grows!!
Wow, from the looks of it that thing was a steal. Unless that locking feature on the oil dipstick was to keep it from shooting through the hood. Every once in a while it's nice to get more than your money's worth.
anti vandalism
That new purchase looks to be a good one. I hope you get many years of service from it. Dirt Buster is my name suggestion. I would like to see you get a nice tall exhaust stack for it because I would not want to pass out breathing that diesel's exhaust and carbon monoxide.
Chris, congrats on new dozer sir ! I admire so much how you strive to keep your equipment looking first rate and timely service....a customer would rather see and pay for well cared for machinery on their job site...to me it reflects on the company owner.
I have ran these model of dozers a lot. They are just rock solid. Nothing fancy but dead dependable. That machine looks really well cared for. That is worth a lot too. You have your little dozer with the six way blade for finish work while this one will be great just for serious pushing. I sure wish I could find one that nice for the money. Even on the farm it would not take long for it to pay for itself.
I would run the gear oil like it is, looked pretty good Chris! You could still see threw it! 👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻To me it’s not as critical as engine oil , it’s just gears sloshing through it! Well after seeing what he does and responds to everything you want, Chris it looks like you made a great deal! He’s a Bad Boy and I like him! Thanks for sharing brother, enjoyed it! 👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸
Boys and their toys lol Can't wait to see it at work. Thanks for upload Chris keep em coming 👍🏻
Always impressed with your Preventative Maintenance measures. Good on ya.
That little kitty is sweet. Almost scary sweet. It still needs a winch.
Chris, when you pull hoses tie a small rope to it so you can pull the new one back through.I watch all your videos, enjoy all.
Well that’s just great! Here I was all ready to offer my brilliant suggestion and there you go beating me to it!
Always use the correct tool for the job... A metric/SAE adjustable impact spanner for removing tight cover panels... Perfect!
Or use a Quebec Socket Set. AKA. Vice Grips.
I've always said, A Man and his machine are like a Boy and his Dog, pure love and caring between the two. Thank you so much for the years of videos that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It certainly looks like you can push some dirt now.
Great video and machine can't wait to see it work May you enjoy it for a long time
Nice machine. I actually think I seen it smiling when it started pushing that pile.
I am 72 years old and have been working around equipment all my life. You have probably already made your decision about changing the oil in the rear ends but for what it is worth, considering the condition of the machine and how it appears to have been well cared for and everything about it I would suggest running it as is for now.
What could it hurt and just because you're 72 years old and you know anything better than he does and you haven't been around that tractor
Isn't it kind of stupid to run ur mouth to someone 7 mo ago?? I'd think his background is very good.
What I've done to help thread a hose through a tight spot is put a wire coat hanger up inside the hose about 6" and then poke the coat hanger through the tightspot. The hose will follow the the hangar.😀
Thank you so much for showing off and maintenance on your new baby. That is the right size dozer for all around work. It's not to big. And not to small, can do fine grading that small dozer's do. I was always so interested in the two Levers for track disconnect on those series of CATS. I saw at Con- Expo how the Asian market has copied that on New Dozer's they are trying to market in US.
No gloves again! I am impressed! You're going to need to buy a semi and trailer or two if you keep this up. Congrats on another new to you piece of equipment! Can't wait for future videos to see what you get yourself in to.
Hey congrats that's one sweet dozer she seems to have gotten some love over the years 👍 and I'm the same as you check everything and if need to change it 🤪
Hi Chris!
Well now...The (2) new/old stock heifers, Wilma & Betty, look good and appear to run good! These girls will treat you right, and YOU can repair them! They start in cold weather, and you don't have to use DEF! ....WOO HOO! GREAT INVESTMENT!!!!!!!!
I would change ALL the fluid's and filters. Oil, grease, and antifreeze are the cheapest things you can put on these puppy's and it pays off big time! Acids and moisture build up in fluid's; Do they have water/antifreeze conditioner filters???
Your video's are like a breathe of fresh air!!
Best Wishes, AND GOD BLESS!
Gary
Wow Chris what a nice machine……I’m sure you will get some good service out of that dozer….one thing I would do if I was you like we did….put an extension pipe on the exhaust but keep it below the guard railing and if it needs it, we welded and painted a bar steel bracket brace from guard rail to guard rail and clamped the extension exhaust pipe to that brace and that eliminated any vibration and the main thing we did that was to keep exhaust smoke from blowing right back in your face……
I would always advise my customers to change all fluids and filters when buying a "new to them" machine. Because you really have no idea when the last service was done and this makes it easier to keep track going forward. I know that it's quite an investment doing this but in the end it is cheap insurance and gives you peace of mind knowing that everything is up to snuff. Nice new dozer!
I agree it might cost a bit, but you know when you need to change it next.
Chris you've got the knack to buy at an auction.
Love the way you treat you equipment with a bit of tlc, should pay you back in the long run.
With the cost of diesel going up in the world here in Wiltshire UK it averaging £1.50p/L seen it as high as £1.65p/L that's app $7.61/gallon US that was before the hiest over Ukrain its about 15% higher now.
Have farmers and contractors like yourself thought of using filtered cooking oil or making biodiesel, for your machines.
You wouldn't need to put a flag up as they could smell you comming like a fish and chip van in the UK.
I have colleague's who have older Volvo cars and they run happily on filtered cooking oil.
Thanks for the video.
Looks like it's been well looked after! 👍👍
I reckon you should treat yourself to an Exhaust extension. 🤔
That one you have there spits out fumes right at Mouth & Nose level!!! 💀😵💫
😊😊😊found a gem!
Nice video, Chris. It looks like you have dropped lucky with her-you must be very pleased ! I have had two chances to see you today: Firstly, in Dirt Perfect's interview [which I loved watching], and now this one. Great, thank you for sharing and for opening up to Dirt Perfect. I have been watching you for years now, but-I still learned loads today. If that doesn't push up your subscriber count, nothing will !!
I love how she starts with no glow plugs. I think you have a steal here!
Put lots of hours on Cat D6D dozers loved everyone of them, good machines, put a longer extension on the exhaust can get a face full if the wind changes. Nice unit.
One like Betty's should do the trick!
Good purchase Chris. Nice piece of older iron. Well maintained apparently and not abused. One restoration project at a time! They should compliment each other well. Here's hoping Betty is close to becoming really healthy.
So glad it was a good machine. Love the old ones. And you take good care of them
This dozer might be my favorite in your fleet, can't wait to see it making money!
Cat started up so smooth on this cold morning. Good buy. Really clean and maintained machine. Just like you like it. Where are you gloves and coveralls?
I used to haul coal and had to grease my truck constantly. I learned that when u get new equipment, well used equipment and have to grease it, have a propane torch handy. Usually when it won't take grease it's because it's hardened at the nipple, hit it with heat for a few and it takes grease
You really know ur equipment!!! Growing up working on equipment is certainly paying off now. Good purchase!!! God's blessings as u continue project. Be safe and keep the videos coming!
Now that was an easy start! The lack of government fluid and "dirt" filters will remind you of how good it should be! 👊
And there's no limp mode or errors lol
That's going to make you a great reliable tractor, can't believe how fast it kicks when you crank it. The starter should last forever. The trans seems tight, put'in down ALL the power. HELLOFA buy, glad you got it!
I agree, That thing starts like a champ !
Nice find Chris. She’s a beaut. You were in love from that first start at the auction. Ha. I wouldn’t think twice about running it with the gear oil in it now as clean as it was and that the machine as a whole seems to well looked after in its life. Congrats on your find.
we used to put in a manifold just behind the grille cover and bolt it to the inside. made for a much nicer hookup, twist them and zip tie them, keeps them out of the way and still allows them to flex, changin oil lets you check it for bits, gives you a baseline for service intervals
I agree, something didn't seem correct just shoving the hoses through the grill
Nice!
Have you named the dozer yet?
Barney seems to fit along side Betty!
Isn't the haul truck named barney?
Hi! I love this! I learned on a D6C and run a D6D a lot to! I envy you! I miss the smell of fresh dirt! Take good care of the old D and she will serve you well !
I believe that has a 3306T engine. Back in the late 80's I did a lot of work for Caterpillar training on the truck side. The 3306 is a nice engine. When I worked for a truck leasing company we had a few in our fleet and they were pretty bullet proof.
I think you got a hell of a dozer. It’s a little more money than I would want to pay, but I’m not in that type of business. You will do fine, that ole dozer will still be pushing when all these new ones will be throwing codes. Also, I really enjoyed your podcast with DP, I am fascinated how people get into business.
i see at 34:55 your pigs are looking good . haven"t seen them in a while.
Looks like you picked a good in! I like how you perform maintenance and keep after it I think you got a good deal Happy for you She’s a beautiful dozer
It’s Amazing how Much💰Independent Truckers, Farmers and Others like you Save completing your own Mtce. 👍
Your new dozer looks like it might have been someone's baby before you got ahold of it.
May I suggest a battery powered impact wrench. Makes life much easier.
P.S. Now I know where Darrel Hammond went after SNL. Nice alias 😉
👍👍👍👍👍nothing better then testing out a new purchase happy for you.... you have a very fine machine right there that will last many more generations
With the obvious basic maintenance it seems you hit the nail on the head when you said it 'had been taken good care of'. C&C Equipment had it on their list to bid for - funny how that all turned out. Loved that you were learning - had to smile. Good video now to work it hard..
“The Adjustable Crescent Hammer” .. The most used tool in the tool box…
I have two of them. One Metric and the other SAE.
Are you keeping your komatsu dozer? I know you were frustrated with the DEF issues
Most likely keeping both. The Komatsu weighs less and he can tow it himself and is better for grading. It also has a cab with heat an a/c. Having two dozers means he can multiple jobs going at once and if one goes down he's not out a dozer.
@@jamesrobinson1022 yeah probably this unless he plans on replacing the komatsu with another one sometime
the Komatsu has a 6 way blade, great for finish grading, the 6 has a straight blade, not good as a finish machine
Everything Is a hammer except a screwdriver and it is a chisel and a punch, and can be a door opener in an emergency. LOL
Glad to see that the unit has been well maintained …..I personally would change every fluid so you know when it was done..It will always in the back off your mind gnawing away at you.
