  • "Lonely Town" from “On the Town”.
    Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Adolph Green & Betty Comden.
In 1943, Leonard Bernstein became the youngest person to conduct a New York Philharmonic subscription concert - he was twenty three. Later that same year, Jerome Robbins approached him with an idea for a ballet: three sailors on twenty-four-hour shore-leave in New York City. This collaboration, Fancy Free, which premiered on April 1944, was an unqualified success. The ballet launched Bernstein's composing career and spawned the musical comedy "On the Town." Bernstein suggested his friends Betty Comden, and Adolph Green, whose work as part of the comedy troupe The Revuers he had long admired, to write the book and lyrics. This was to be a love letter to New York, Bernstein's adopted city. They began work in June 1944 and each brought with them extraordinary creative genius, passion for their craft, and remarkably youthful exuberance. They were all in their mid-twenties, working on the first of what would be many Broadway projects.
"On the Town" tells the story of three sailors during World War II and their amorous adventures on a twenty-four-hour shore-leave in New York City. “Lonely Town” is performed in Scene seven of Act one, by the character Gabey, one if the three sailors on shore-leave. He laments his loneliness despite being in the crowds of New York City. It is the first solo number performed by one of the principal characters in the musical. The song segues into the "Lonely Town Pas de Deux" ballet in the musical in which Gabey watches other sailors dance with girls while he is alone.
"On the Town" was an instant hit when it opened on Broadway in 1944. MGM acquired the film rights that same year, and released a movie in 1949, starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Louis B. Mayer replaced almost all of Bernstein's score, so Bernstein boycotted the film.
    [GABEY]
Gabey's comin', Gabey's comin' to town!
    So what? Who cares?
Back on the ship it seemed such a snap,
You'd tap a girl on the shoulder,
    She'd turn around
And she'd say "I love you!"
But once on shore, it's not such a snap!
    You get the cold shoulder,
    The old run-a-round.
You're left with no one but you.
Gabey's comin', Gabey's comin' to town.
    A town's a lonely town,
    When you pass through
And there is no one waiting there for you,
    Then it's a lonely town.
    You wander up and down,
    The crowds rush by,
A million faces pass before your eye,
    Still, it's a lonely town.
    Unless there's love,
A love that's shining like a harbour light,
    You're lost in the night;
    Unless there's love,
    The world's an empty place,
And every town's a lonely town.
