Shabbat with an Orthodox Jew | Story Time | Orthodox Jewish Mom (Jar of Fireflies)

  • In this video I do a sit down story time where I tell you everything that happens on Shabbat. I use the previous Shabbat (Shabbos) as my example and talk you through everything we do starting with lighting candles on Friday night, dinner with unexpected guests, how late we were up, what happened after our guests left, then off to bed before the morning where I get up, handle breakfast, my husband leaves for services, I get things ready for lunch and heat up our food, then leave for services myself with the kids, explain kiddish, then we come home for lunch with our guests and I go on to explain what happens after lunch up until the close of Shabbat. Along the way I explain things and share our traditions and laws that I follow as an Orthodox Jew who observed Shabbat.
    Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and we have three wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This video is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) You can see how this particular Jewish homeschool mom sets up her days, rolls with the punches, and gets it all done. Thanks for watching!

      It seems like the men attend a lot of services. what happens if a man has a job that does not allow them so much time off or is not flexible on scheduling? Also, did your one friend not know about not talking between washing hands and eating the bread?

    Chana, I love that I found your channel. Its like finding a new “bossom friend” . At age 13, I discovered my fathers family had immigrated to the US from Russia, just before the Bolshevik revolution. My paternal grandparents both came from kosher families. I obviously wasn’t raised in the Jewish faith, but I have wanted to learn more about it. When raising my kids one of them developed a brain tumor, and my hands became too full to branch out much beyond his care, child raising (3) and going back to work once my son was more stable. Now he is out living a full life and getting married, so I have free time now!!! Ive been looking up synogogs in my area for classes.

    • @milkteanomnom
      @milkteanomnom Před 3 lety +2

      Actually, cleaning up comes with a lot of rules. Like you have to use either Shabbat sponges (sponges that don’t absorb water), or you have to use a bristled brush to wash dishes. We aren’t allowed to use hot water on Shabbat either, so it has to be cold water only. We are only allowed to wash dishes if we need those dishes for another meal during the duration of Shabbat. We can’t just wash dishes just to get it over with. We can only wash the dishes we need. There’s a lot of other rules that apply to all sorts of things concerning cleaning, but hopefully that gave you some insight on it.

I discovered Judaism in 2017 then I told my mom I was going to convert and she said “ You know your great grandmother on my side was Jewish right?” I was like “No! I didn’t! “ it was the best day of my life learning that! So I have been an observant Orthodox Jew for over 2 years now and I can so relate to your Shabbat prep videos! It’s an amazing and wonderful time to get close to HaShem and family! Thank you so much for sharing your stories with us! You are a true joy to watch! 🙏🏻🇳🇮💚

    I love how your faith has you all coming together as family & with friends.Many years ago we had this where families & friends came together even though we are not Jewish ,now it is not done like days gone by for some of us .I think if people would go back to this & to their faith we would have a better world to live in.Your children will carry this on to their children & for many generations. May I ask why the bread is so important in the meal? Have a lovely day

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  Před 3 lety +6

      Yes I agree! As for your question about the bread, there are many reasons. It’s the core of our meal. When we had the Temple, we would take a portion of our dough when making challah and bring it to the priests in the temple. We still separate our challah today though with no temple, we burn it instead. This is one of the special mitzvot (laws) of women.

I'm not Jewish myself, but a couple of years ago we moved into a neighborhood with a big Orthodox Jewish population, and while I am friendly with my neighbors (they are pretty awesome, actually), I always feel odd asking them certain questions about their culture, etc, because I don't want to come off as disrespectful or something, since I still don't know them very well yet...

  • @Shan-flan

    Thank you for such a detailed account, was very interesting to listen to :) I am curious though on one point... you’ve mentioned in other videos that Shabbat is about a day of rest which in turn means certain work is not permitted., however, might it not be reasoned that using say the vacuum to clear away crumbs instead of a broom is more restful? I guess I can see why you might not use the vacuum to give your whole house a once over on Shabbat but I’m curious as to why a small task like cleaning up after dinner with children might necessitate the “lower tech” option of a broom?

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  Před 3 lety +16

      Great question! So what we consider work on Shabbat is not the same as what we consider work in the traditional sense (like washing dishes for example). We get our rules for Shabbat from the Torah. When we were building the Tabernacle, we stopped that work on Shabbat. We get our definition of work (for the purposes of Shabbat) from this. There are 39 activities that we ceased on Shabbat while we were building the Tabernacle. These were things like lighting a fire, weaving, and more. So using a vacuum would be considered like lighting a fire because of the electricity, but using a broom is fine. Plus, it makes my Shabbat much more enjoyable to have a clean floor :) I hope that helps to explain!

    Hey!
    I recently found your channel and like what you do.
    I saw you had unexpected guests and you had no dessert. I found this recipe on a package of potato flour / potato starch. You can make this compote on dried fruit, canned fruit and fresh fruits / berries. It can be served with milk / cream (oatmeal, coconut milk) or porridge (rice porridge) or ice cream. It is served cold, and may be suitable for shababat.
    This is how it says on the package and is translated into English. I do not know how it is written on your potato flour / starch packages in the USA.
    6-8 servings.
    0.26 liters of diluted fruit juice or berry juice
    4 tablespoons potato flour
    2 cups of fruit or berries (1cup of dried fruit soaked in water)
    Put everything in a saucepan. Heat while stirring, continue to stir until it boils.
    If you make this compote on rhubarb, you can season it with ginger and lime juice.
    I usually make elderflower juice (when there is access to the flowers. Most recently I have made juice on meadowsweet and it can act as a liquid for the compote.
