- In this video, I take you along as I get ready for Shabbat during Chol Hamoed Sukkot! I start my day in the Sukkah with my breakfast and prayers. Then I chat with you about what is going on in our day, things I need to do. Then we get started! Cleaning, cooking, setting the table, all the normal things except this week we are in the Sukkah! I spend some time baking for my daughter's birthday, we make a cake together and later decorate it. I also make my favorite soup: Cockaleekie soup! Ok so the big meal ended up being just fine :) How do you feel about big meals? Would you rather a smaller meal or do you prefer all the people? :)
I am a massive introvert so smaller meals for me. Certainly anything more than 10 people and I will start freaking out. 😆
With most of my family having passed on an being introvert I don't have many friends that I am comfortable being with. But oh my being the 7th child and only girl meals were so awesome! I miss them and it makes me sad that my late in life now 16 yo child hasn't had the family time that I enjoyed and miss. Blessings y'all!

I’m kind of an introvert so small gatherings are preferred unless it’s my immediate family then it’s ok ! Lol ! I also love that you start your day with prayer and scripture, I start my day with devotions and prayer and it gets my day started on the right vibe ! 💜

I get waaaaay to anxious to host large numbers of people for holiday gatherings ! My brother fortunately loves hosting large gatherings so he does most of the holiday entertaining . I just bring a couple of our favorite holiday dishes and he does all the rest !

@@eilidhmu that I do not know yet. I know the clan names on both my parents sides, so that probably pegs me down to an area. I haven’t been able to visit yet but I would LOVE to one day and then I’d for sure figure out what areas my family lived so I could go to those places and perhaps even meet some distant relatives :)
@@jaroffireflies that sounds amazing! I'm from the Scottish Highlands, and I live right beside Loch Ness. I have looked a little bit into my family tree but I'd LOVE to look further into it.
@@eilidhmu genealogy is very cool to me especially being as I was born in America which doesn’t have the family histories for most of us that other countries do. We have done a lot of research on both sides, but especially my moms which is our totally Scottish side (only half Scottish on my dads side)

I have a big Christmas Eve dinner for family and close friends which is usually around 40 people. I set formal tables but serve buffet style. I love doing this each year. When my daughter was little she always complained but now sh she is married with children she speaks very fondly of those dinners, go figure.
Lol the things that change as we age :) I will say thanksgiving is my one exception, I could have a hundred people at thanksgiving and just be thrilled :)

Two tricks to reduce your cakes doming: 1, turn down the oven 10 degrees so it bakes slower. 2, get some cake baking strips. Wilton makes them. You soak them and wrap them around the pan so the edges bake at the same rate as the middle. Of course, then you have less garbage cake to snack on. If you have time, You've Been Desserted sometimes posts vegan and/or GF dessert recipes.

I just place one cake layer upside down so the domed part goes into the indent on the plate and the flat part is available for frosting and stacking. 😁

I love your routine of eating/ reading in peace like a civilized human. As a homeschooling mom how do you do it? I haven't had a hot meal I didn't have to share or a devotional time that wasn't interrupted in years.
So I wake up early in the morning on purpose so I get that quiet time for myself :) For other meals I find that it works well for our family to have a really nice hot lunch (after book work in the morning so my kids get a nice break before we dive into afternoon activities, we are Charlotte Mason style), and then a super casual dinner that at it fanciest is like spaghetti :) But the big thing is waking up a good hour or two before my kids :)
I’m a homeschool veteran and all of my kids are either out of college or are in college. You have to make time for yourself. Your kids are going to be ok if you do something special just for YOU. That is not being selfish. It is called self-care. I’d you carve out a little time a day, you’ll find you’re a much better mom, teacher, wife and human being if you take some time for yourself first. Don’t skip a hot meal. It’s not good for you nutritionally and spiritually. Make something easy for dinner and sit down at the table and just have family dinner. My children had chores as long as they were able to do them. Of course it was picking up toys at first. As they grew and progressed, we’d teach them a new skill. That is also educational. We worked as a team and nobody was assigned a certain chore in a certain day. We all worked together for the common good of our household and for things to run smoothly. The children will appreciate it as they feel that stress too. Good bless no I hope you have some time to just be you.❤️

Happy birthday! Tip for bugs in sukah (for next year😉) we put an electronic bug zapper with altra violet light in the sukah, and that attracts the bugs to it and away from your plats and food.

HI I am an Orthodox mother of 7, I find it amazing you have the time to daven and eat breakfast like this! I hardly made it into the Succah during Chol Hamoed at all especially during this Chag. And where do your kids go when your filming? And where are they when your cooking?
Hello Nechamah! I wake up much earlier than my kids so I can have that time to pray. We all spend a lot of time in the sukkah together for meals or games or reading or anything like that. When I’m filming, my kids are around. You saw them in many parts of the video and if you watched the bloopers at the end you can see and hear them more :) I just don’t generally include much of them.

I am alone now, but when I used to have big get togethers, I tended to like them more after they were over.😆 I enjoyed sharing food and time with friends, but planning and anticipation weren’t as relaxing.
I loved making soups of every kind for my family. Chicken and turkey vegetable soups were a big hit. Leeks are not my favorite, maybe because I just haven’t had them too many times.

We usually go to a friends house for big gatherings since we live in an apartment, it’s a good size apartment but he lives on a non working farm and I love the fresh air and freedom of country life and miss it so much. I’m a country girl not a city girl!!!

I love your spirit and patience! You have your priorities set to advantage your children and home first! You didn’t let the big group of guests overwhelm you so that you were able to let your daughter help with the cake! Respect. Did you have enough soup for everyone? Cake? I was getting nervous for you with soup on a hot night. I have to say your peace and confidence is amazing! P. S. Over the years I have learned to cut my flowers down to fit in smaller juice type glasses or small snifters so that the arrangements are below eye level and guests can see each other. You will have many tiny arrangements that will run down the center of the table. If the flowers try to pop out, make a tiny grid with scotch tape across the top and stick the stems in between. But I liken making the mini arrangements to balancing stones…you can get it to stay with a little patience…which you have in Spades! You are doing a mitzvah by making these videos. They are uplifting! Thank you.

To eliminate the domed cakes, use Bake Even Strips. They are insulated fabric liners that you soak in water that wrap around the outside of the baking pan. They ensure everything cooks evenly so no more domes! I don’t know if things like that need to be Kosher, but may be worth checking out. ☺️

I see so many young people making poor choices, choosing violent paths, or military paths, or desperately seeking connection in serial relationships, and it is saddening to me. We have been critical of religious culture in all its forms for 100+ years as a “scientism” grew its roots. Religious cultures offer maps of relationship ideals, making family life healthier and more viable ideally. Yes, humans do not always live up to such ideals, but these cultural patterns are what we have inherited historically, and need to be revived! God bless you. May your example create a path for others to imitate in their own ways!

I grew up in a large Italian family that was all close by. I didn't know how to cook for a small gathering. Everything was always made for like 20 people and that's how I learned to cook . Was a hard adjustment when I went to college, though the roommates - and everyone else - was always well fed. :)

I made the Cock-a-leekie soup today, using tomato instead of carrots and wild rice instead of white rice, it's delicious and was fun to try after seeing you make it.

Children are wonderful. There was a time when only having 15 at the dinner table had me looking around to see who was missing. We have 19 kids in total. I use leeks frequently in all sorts of things - including soups. I typically cut them in half lengthwise and then in rings so that I can rinse any dirt that may be inside them out. I also typically dehydrate about 15 pounds (dehydrated) of leeks every year so that I have them for whatever even when we're in the middle of a blizzard and dinner is needed.

@@jaroffireflies We adopted 16. I love kids. We homeschooled as well. I'm currently homeschooling grandkids because of Covid and them being immunocompromised (it's NOT what I thought I was going to be doing when the grandkids started arriving let me tell ya).
