  • Ok… let’s talk GOSPEL CHOPS!
We’ve all heard epic gospel players such as Sharay Reed, Justin Raines and Fred Hammond tearing it up with those crazy sounding gospel bass fills…
And let’s get it straight… we ALL want to get those into our playing, right?! ;)
Well, in this lesson I’m going to show you:
How to work those gospel style bass fills into your playing
2 scales you can use to achieve that gospel sound
And an AWESOME exercise that will enable you to get your hammer-ons and pull-offs together (this is a big deal for getting the correct feel within your gospel style bass fills)
    Ok… question for you guys…
Who are your favourite gospel bass players… and what albums with them playing on should I check out? As you can imagine… I’m a TOTAL bass nerd and love finding out about what and who you guys are listening too… make sure you let me know by leaving a comment below the video!
As always, see you in the shed…
    Scott :)
PS. If you’re going to be coming along to the London Bass Show this weekend (March 4th and 5th) I’m going to be there with the SBL team… plus we’re going to have our own room and will be running 4 workshops per day with SBL faculty members such as Cody Wright, Zoltan Dekany, Steve Lawson, Phil Mann, Chris May, Stefan Redtenbacher, Geoff Chalmers… and me!
We’re also going to have a meet up on each day too at 3.30pm around the cafe within the show…
It’d be amazing to meet you… so if you’re coming along, grab me and say hi!

More gospel bass pretty please. I have learned so much from your academy, Scott. I play bass at my church and it would be helpful to hear how gospel bassists navigate contemporary Christian and gospel music since there are usually no bass lines, per se, in the songs. The keyboards have a ton of chords to play and the low end is just keeping up with the roots. At lease that's where I am.
Anyway, it would be great to get some insight.

Try learning to any bass player that you encounter. adapt whatever useful they are doing and specially find a good bass player mentor who knows what they are doing. and practice, practice, practice.

_Fractal _ I have learned a lot from Scott's Bass Lessons and loads of other people on CZcams. Of course practice is how younger better, but I have found that playing what you practice is essential. By that, I mean try new things in your playing and venture away from starting on the root.

  • @imhenotic

Great lesson, let me add just one thing, it is that the main character of the pentatonic is that it doesnt has any semitones, in fact the notes you extract from mayor/minor are the ones that cause semitones to appear. So the gospel/bluessy/juicy thing comes in when you add them, of course it depends on where you do that what type of feel you get, so experiment adding semitones to the pentatonics to find interesting things.
