I am actually planning to buy a 2.3 Honda for my Carina 20. Untill now I have been using a 4HP Yamaha, so I was in doubt if the Honda would be suficient. Now I am convinced. Thank you for the demo (There are no tide in the waters i frequent) 👌 Best regards from Denmark
I used my little Honda 2.3 to shift my mirror offshore upriver ( blockage in fuel line). It pushed it along fine but i didnt notice the speed. I think with any kind of sea, it would have struggled. It doesn't take much to move a boat on flat water but its different when its choppy. I notice that when I'm rowing to my mooring.
I have a 6hp tohatsu as the main one - but this little beauty runs in the tunnel and is air cooled so it is almost debris proof - and very economical compared to the big one
the panasonic has an external Lumix gunmike I think it cost £100. It has a wind gag on it. It still picks up the odd wind noise, but a cupped hand can get rid of that I used to work with an editor who said... no audio... no story. You can always cut around duff images, but duff audio is duff audio D
too early to say I want to go to the Orkneys - but money and time will decide I would also hate to miss the Calli - maybe overwinter on the canal and the n go to the Orkneys on the other hand - petrol prices are getting well out of hand
that was shot on the humber where the tides run at similar speeds - but only in the middle - along the shallow bits it runs at less than two. I have not yet been on the Severn but only a fool would try to plug up against the middle of the tide.
Dylan, what model is the panasonic? I have been using the kodak zi8 but have started using a kodak playsport as it is water resistant to 10 feet but it has no audio input .. I recently bought a suction cup mount with a ball joint head on ebay for $3.80 shipping included, you might want to look into it for attaching your camera on the boat. I made a little video on it $3 DIY Dashcam experiments with Kodak zi8 & Playsport I agree with your editor, a video with poor sound is unwatchable.
Hey I have a 6 hp that works like a 3.5 hp. I got it realy cheap from some guy, in a back alley, he had on a trench coat on and he had sunglasses on, it was night time. Doh! Just picking on you, :)
+KeepTurningLeft Had to find out the meaning of ''bog standard'' first...LOL. ok now. I will go for the original propeller and the long shaft which was on the plan. The outboard is mounted on a swivel bracket (UP & DOWN) fixed to transom that I made myself with aluminum and wood from a web photo. at $225.00 I was sure I could make one for much cheaper, cost me $60.. I have a 3.6 HP 2 strokes Mercury (oldie), the problem is that no NEUTRAL position was in the design. The propeller turns when we pull the starter line and when engine starts on it's own, bingo you're in action right away. No problem on a dinghy or a sailing canoe (like I had before), but on this boat, I might eventually hit a rock, or worst, another boat. That's why I need NEUTRAL position. Thanks for your good explanations, your time and patience.
Hello Dylan. I finally got my Yamaha outboard 2.5 HP 4 stroke long shaft New Generation with Ultra Low Emission on wednesday the 15 th. I like very much and it will give a good push to my small 19 ft sailboat. Were you able to recover your outboards or you purchased a new one?
Very nice video! Beautiful boat as well! Who is the builder? I'm shopping a Honda 2.3 for my Trinka 12 Sail looks like the Honda will work just perfect. Now for the sailors that think the little Honda is noisy, they must not be old enough to remember the British Seagull that use to power our small sailing craft. Cheers from Florida
Hello Dylan, when you were talkin g in the beginning I noticed your audio is very good. What camera are you using now and are you using an external microphone and do you add any wind muffling device to it? your outdooor audio lacks the annoying wind noises of many youtube videos filmed outdoors in the wind. I have an old 3hp Yamaha malta outboard . It is unusual as it can go in weedy shallow areas without fouling the prop better than any motor I have used.
Hello Dylan. After watching a first video of ''Honda 2.3 HP pushing a 23 ft sailboat'', I'm more than sure that a similar motor like 2.5 HP will push my 19 ft centerboarder. Any reason why you have Honda (which is noisier than other brand) I mean is it because of Quality of the product or because it's air cooled, or both?. Thank you again....all your videos are nice to watch!!!
+grafophone I like the air cooled - with a small boat when you go forwards to fiddle with the amchor the engine comes out of the water. That can be a worry with a water cooled engine - with an air cooled it matters not at all. The engine has been a fantastic starter - sadly it got nicked from my shed this spring czcams.com/video/pjw7oqQf0Qs/video.html
+KeepTurningLeft Air cooled engine looks to be a good choice, at least when mooring. Very sorry for your 2 motors that got nicked. Here too we have more than a plenty of those sub-humans who don't dare working daily struggling for a living. Whish you get them back or have chance to purchase others at dealer's cost (no taxes ....lol)
+KeepTurningLeft Usually yes. Jackasses like these are smart enough not sell your stuff in your location. They sell further away, like Scotland, Ireland, who knows????
But with the 2 knot adverse tide it is only doing half that mpg - in other words 5 mpg! Of course, with gentle motoring and a foul tide it is easy get zero mpg. My 2-stroke Suzuki 2.5 on my Mirror dinghy seems to use a litre an hour at moderate revs, about 15mpg, no tide and smooth water.
you did water only three feet deep - shore 50 feet away I I also ride a horse and a bike sans helmet - but driving the polo is more dangerous than any of these activities yours Death Wish Dylan

Bloody brilliant little engine. Air cooled so it noisy but no corrosion

the other good thing about being air cooled and in well is that it heats the cockpit up
it will keep my feet lovely and toasty in the winter
These small motors are impressive. I now have a 3.5 hp on my boat and It works as well as that 6 hp that was stolen from me!
I have a 6hp tohatsu as the main one - but this little beauty runs in the tunnel and is air cooled so it is almost debris proof - and very economical compared to the big one
good plan
will do next time
D
tank is a litre
according to Hulot it runs for 40 mins at full tilt
4 knots - so call it ten miles to the gallon at full blatt
the panasonic has an external Lumix gunmike

Dylan, i presume the honda is longshaft?? i thought they were only available in short shaft, keep up the good work Chris
I would love to see some tests like this done on the sevenestory when the tides coming in, the tide is around 7-12 knots on a normal day.

One more question (thanks for taking time to answer). Is the engine propeller original or specially designed for sailboat?
+grafophone bog standard - they do make a long shaft version which would grip the water better

both gone forever I am afraid - fekkin scrotes
That is a good one! :-)
short shaft - the boat has a tunnel under it - like a lifeboat

Hunter Minstrel - as for the noise - it is - but it is air cooled
I'm still using my British Seagull most days. Love my Seagull
Dylan! Did I REALLY see you on the foredeck with no lifejacket or lifeline - alone on the boat and with a tide like that running :-0

Why didn't you measure the speed against the tide and with the tide, add them, divide by 2.Save you drifting into the rocks.

poland is a great place to sell nicked UK engines apparently - they leave the UK by the container load
put the sails up..... or let the tide do the work and the boat can do an infinite number of miles per gallon
Don't mention the weather!
Need to know if you are going over the top or taking the Callie Cheat?

Dont think the number of 'likes' bares any reflection on the number of people enjoying the videos.
