Great little engines, I bought one for £100 about 4 years ago, was so pleased with it when I saw the bloke I bought it off a few months later I gave him another £20, he looked at me as though I was crazy

Just the fact that it is air cooled is a good reason to have one! :-)

Hello Dylan. Watching this clip and the other with the 23 ft sailboat had convinced me to purchase a Yamaha 2.5 HP 4 stroke with a long foot, model 2016, brand new. Thanks for all your good clips.

I like the centrifugal clutch - the outboard rotates through 360 degrees - so it has reverse. It is a tremendous comfort to know that it is on the boat and ready for action

I’ve got one, pushes my WWP14 along beautifully, but as Dylan says it is a bloody noisy engine. But it’s bullet proof and will get the job done when some of the cheaper alternatives will pack up. I used mine on the WWP without sails to cruise the upper Thames reaches, filled it with fuel when we left, were on the water a good 4-5 hours and still had some in the tank when we got back. That said we were in very benign conditions and pottering (no pun intended) at no more than 3-4 knots.
Alongside the tiller it works beautifully. Reverse is managed by simply rotating the motor on itself, in fact it gives 360 directional power which is very useful for close quarter manoeuvres.

Thanks Dylan,I'm looking for changing my deceased Honda 5 for something else. This one is an air cooled engine, no salt water in it, easiest maintenance...
For me any suggestion will be welcome.

i say this with the best of intentions, on the rusty bolts trying staying on top of them, take them out maintaine them or replace them instead of letting it go forever untle they look like that. but anyway nice video i enjoyed it. going to to check out online the knots gauge and the depth gauge , have to get one of them for myself. thanks.

Replace the rusty fasteners with stainless parts. They are not too expensive. Use a bit of lanocote or teffgel.on the threads to head off any corrosion issues down the road on the mild steel parts they are threaded onto/into. On our 2.3 the only rusty fasteners are the ones on the very top inside. There ars 3 cap nuts and washers holding down the pull start recoil assembly and 2 more for the fuel tank. I smeared a light coat of the lanocote grease on all of the other fasteners and so far zero rust. They look like new and we are a saltwater boat.

I am sure it would be fine - very frugal too - lots of power - but noisy as heck. Good when you have to go forward as it does not mind running in thin air

It sounds like you need to clean out the idle jet behind the locktite cover at the top of the carb. In the video it kept killing the moment you tried to give it even a little throttle at first. It will absolutely do that if you leave the choke on but after just a few seconds warming up it should rev crisply from idle without killing once you turn off the choke. It doesn't take much bad fuel to plug up and bugger this finicky idle needle and the only way to clean it out is to use a torch to heat up the screw cover and yank it off. Then the needle can be removed and cleaned. Before removing it count the turns going in until it stops so you know where to put it back after you clean it.
Poor adjustment of the centrifugal clutch can also exasperate this issue as it puts added load right at the bad spot off idle when the prop kicks in.
When tuned up this motor should start first pull every time and once the choke is turned off it should idle and accelerate crisply after only a few seconds warming up. If you give it a weak pull it might kickback and yank the handle out of your hand though. But failing that it always starts first pull and if it doesn't then it needs attention. Usually draining bad/old gas out of the carb fixes things if it takes more than one pull to start or maybe a new plug. If those don't fix it then drain the entire tank by removing it and clean the filter. If that still doesn't do it then the carb needs to be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned inside.

I always wondered why more people didn't use and outboard instead of a inboard on their sailboat? Seems like you have more storage space inside the boat and plus outboard is easier to work on than the cramp spaces inboards are placed and no gas smell inside the hull

I suspect that an outboard that is mounted off to one side is best pointed slightly inboard. In other words, pushing towards the boat's centre board and CLR. That is what I find on my dinghy. David

That's impressive performance for a small motor, but very noisy. I think that model is air cooled so there is no water jacket to deaden the sound. On the plus side, that makes it lighter and cheaper. I find a larger motor at lower revs is a less stressful noise if you're going any distance.

    • @KeepTurningLeft
      @KeepTurningLeft  Před 6 lety

I agree - they are noisy and powerful at full revs - at low revs they are fairly quiet. It depends if you are in a rush at all... at all.

there has to be a reason - you just have to track it down n- it is clearly not a design fault otherwise all other Honda owners would be complaining about the same thingspark, fuel, air, compression

    • @spev66

Hi Dylan. I'm so happy to see this video!!! I want to buy an outboard motor, but not sure (so far) about how much power to push the craft. The less power required, the cheaper in money expense. My sailboat I built, 19 ft, made of wood, with (almost flat bottom - light V shape), is a centerboarder boat. Weighting 1200 lbs (empty) I'd like you tell me what cruising speed you get at half throttle, to me, it looks like you get a happy 4 or 5 knots, witch is good (who's in a rush on a sailboat anyhow!!!). 2nd Question - Can you still use the motor in straight and cross wind at F5 conditions, and still keep the boat running well ??? F5, because I won't sail over F6. Thank you very much.

This makes a ridiculous noise because the exhaust vents to air. Make sure you buy an outboard which vents the exhaust underwater.

Since I wrote this, my final choice was a Yamaha 2.5 long foot 4 strokes. It's a fine engine giving a lot of power, all power needed, It's even better than expected since my boat is lighter than Dylan's clip. Thanks again Dylan for this good video!!! Speed is 4,5 knots, very easy. Good enough for a sailboat.
