Funny thing is, a lot of people tend to focus on spaceships, phasers and tech so star trek gets a bad rep for being a really nerdy show. But half the series isn't even about tech or math. Especially stuff like DS9. I am glad people today are more open to science fiction series in popular media.

Very favorite and *rewatchable* episode. It’s just.. inspiring to see how well trained, disciplined, and coordinated the crew all are in such a situation, as well as how well each of them deal with problems outside their areas of specialization, make difficult command decisions like Troi does, and persuade people who aren’t trained crew, even little kids, to work together like Picard does.

The real disaster is that this is the episode that spawned the Internets most infamous star trek fan fiction ever. The "Marissa stories" are legendary bad and hilarious in their story of the girl from this episode becoming Starfleets youngest captain (by the age of 16) along with a crew that age that are all somehow all that young but married to one another (Marissa herself celebrating her wedding by slaughtering Romulans) and then there's the chapter where the pope appears in his pope mobile to save the universe

Unfortunately, her parents perished during the other mission, so Jean-Luc Picard adopts her, raising her as his daughter. Later, she discovers her father was crown prince of an alien world, making her a Princess. Of course, as she continues to save the Federation, Star Fleet decides to place her on the command fast track, placing her into command of her own starship at the ripe old age of sixteen.

Not only is it a great take on the classic Irwin Allen disaster films but most of the main characters were put in positions that were not to their strengths. Picard starts off in the pilot saying to Riker that he's not a family man and, 5 seasons later, he bonds with those 3 kids. So many great moments from all the main cast.🖖

There was a Sci-Fi convention here in Denver when the show was still airing, and Patrick was the star guest. They set up two microphones, one down each side of the hall, for people to ask him questions. In one of the lines was a Dad holding a little boy (maybe 5 to 8?). When it was their turn, Dad lowered the mic, and the little boy said something like "at the start of the show, you said you didn't like kids. Do you like kids more, now?"
Patrick smiled, and rather than answer the question he jumped down off the dias, walked over, winked at the dad, and lifted the boy up like he was his own son. Patrick said "Captain Picard has learned to love children as the show has gone on, and as for me, I have a son of my own. He's a bit bigger than you, though. I think think this young man deserves a round of applause for being very brave and asking the question himself, don't you?" and we all clapped. Patrick then whispered something to the Dad as he handed the boy back to him. I think they got some nice photos and an autograph.

I was around the age these kids were when this episode came out, so I really loved this episode. The idea of being stuck in a turboshaft with Captain Picard at that age seemed like the coolest thing ever. I also really enjoyed the other stories. The whole thing with surviving vacuum, with Data's head being removed and still operating, and the dynamic on the bridge were all great.
In a weird sort of way this episode also marks the beginning of some real continuity on the series. Yeah, we had the Borg show up again, before, and we had Sela pop up a couple times, but with this episode there starts to be a lot more continuity between episodes on much smaller stuff, like Troi's professional development, Ensign Ro adapting to life on the Enterprise, and Keiko and Miles O'Brien having a kid. And honestly I don't think we would've gotten an episode like 7x15 if not for this episode either.

I think this episode does a lot of great things! The one thing that I have a problem with is that Geordi and Dr. Crusher inhale before decompressing. In actually, you'd want to exhale beforehand to prevent your lungs from bursting immediately, which I think makes things a little more intense as they'd have to go longer without a breath of air.
Other than that, I love the insight we get into Ro's character. I like that this episode forces Troi to grow more than most Troi-centric episodes, including the callback to a Troi episode "The Loss". I love the comedy of Worf and Keiko. I think it's great that we have Picard face his greatest fear: children. I enjoy Data's head being carried around. Definitely a great bottle episode that shows how much creativity they have at this point in season 5 (one of the show's strongest seasons).

She played Colleen Cooper, Chad Allen's character's younger sister, in the early seasons of "Dr. Quinn", though she later left the show and Jessica Bowman took over playing Collen.

Data’s body is very heavy, so Riker might have had a lot of trouble moving it, especially moving it safely in a way to avoid himself being electrocuted and dying if he had removed Data’s head prior to cutting the current! The series is great in how frequently it can throw out the traditional good vs evil plot structure and you don’t always know who or what the actual antagonist will be. Like in the previous ep when it seems like it’s the crystalline entity (though it kind of is for a while), or in Darmok when it seems like it’s the Tamarians.
What I learned most from this show is that, although you may have your own particular adversarial individuals or groups working against you, your first and greatest obstacle is almost always your lack of understanding of the situation. Life is about how you proceed when you're only capable of operating on limited information.

It did lead to some interesting episodes at times, but yeah, doesn't really make any sense. Roddenberry was kind of a nutjob about TNG. He really wanted a post-conflict utopia where all the problems were philosophical. His plan wasn't even to have a bridge on the ship, it was basically just going to be the conference room, with everyone sitting around talking the whole time, then when everyone agreed with the most persuasive philosophical argument, they'd just tell the computer to do whatever. There are certainly a couple of faults with this episode, but it's still in my top 10 episodes of _all_ of Trek, in fact, a few episodes of TNG's season 5 are in that group.
One important thing they got wrong in possibly my favourite scene in this episode: if you find yourself in a decompressing cargo bay (or any formerly pressurized area), absolutely _DO_ exhale. You do _not_ want to try to hold back an atmosphere's worth of pressure with your larynx. Exhaling into vacuum you'll have about 30 seconds of useful consciousness to do what you need to do to repressurize the bay, and about 30 more of unconsciousness before brain damage sets in. Maybe longer if you're an experienced freediver. Also it would probably be a good idea to close your eyes if you can, they probably won't be much use in that situation anyway as all the liquid from their surface will simultaneously boil and begin to freeze making it difficult to see. You might be able to get away with a few anti-blinks (opening your eyes for a few milliseconds) to get your bearings or to see which button to hit on the panel.

Here's what I've always not understood from this episode. It is established that the artificial gravity is created by plates in the floors. Because of that, why are the lift shafts not zero gravity?
I understand why for production reasons, but it would be easier in-universe.

    • @bcn1gh7h4wk
      @bcn1gh7h4wk Před 2 lety

because technically each "shaft" is actually a stack of "deck sections".
the _deck_ gets the gravity plating.... the shaft is just a space for the lift to pass though.
as a deck section, the shaft has service lines running around it as well, and those are loaded.
I believe there's at least one episode where a deck is unreachable, so the lift stops several decks above it, and the characters go down via a service tube.
the lift still works, it just won't go where there's no power, still within the same shaft.... which means, the shaft is sectioned.

Yeah, they *should* have removed Data's head before trying to disrupt the electrical arcing. I suspect the reason they did it that way is so they could save an additional fx shot, because we didn't actually see Riker remove Data's head.

The attachments (presumably magnetic) would have to hold up to a fair amount of action anyway; and the strength of the air movement would not be as much as you might think, and would decrease very rapidly in any case. We imagine decompression being like a hurricane, but actually the dynamic would be more like popping a bottle of champagne.

I'm surprised that no Trekkie has brought it up here, it being a part of their nature; but they're in space and it would be unnecessary and inefficient for there to be artificial gravity in a turbolift shaft. We have to assume that there's some technical reason why the shaft can't be isolated from the ship's AG.

I loved the character beats and development in the episode. However, I hated that many of the contrivances they used for a disaster made it look like the Enterprise could never pass a 20th Century safety inspection.
A cargo bay that has an exterior door, and no pressure suits are available in case of emergency?
No chemical fire extinguishers as a back up in case of force field fire suppression fails?
A turbo lift that has no manual locking mechanism to keep it from falling?
No manual way to eject the warp core in case of computer failure.
And in general, why don't they use fuses for bridge consoles? They are always on the edge of blowing up because too much energy gets shoved through them when they sustain the slightest damage.
It's really all the character work that made the episode

Some DS9 storylines just wouldn't work with Ro there instead of Kira. Plus, it was better to have a Bajoran militia executive officer butting heads with a Starfleet commanding officer, rather than some Bajoran Ensign in Starfleet just sort of there. It would have really changed the show, and considering how good DS9 turned out, I wouldn't want to roll the dice again.
