    They are children in this video. But they've grown up and are still making music. Their sound has changed a bit but it's still in the same vein of metal meets pop.

    The metal aspect is their attitude, willingness and ability to break all the rules - to do something untried and original.
    BABYMETAL was always the girls and it was their voices and talents that the whole idea was formed around. The band was brought in about 2 years after they started so that they could progress and break out from the JPop and Japanese Idol scene and that could happen only if and after the girls had found an audience nobody knew existed.
    Their original purpose and intention was to introduce metal to a new and younger audience who would have never been exposed to it without BABYMETAL "infiltrating" the JPop and Japanese Idol scene where they could get some airtime.
    A happy bi-product of BABYMETAL was to bring disillusioned old metalheads and rockers back to music they had all but given up on and to introduce them to music they would have never listened to either .... BABYMETAL are like a two way gateway band introducing all sorts of people to all sorts of music.

    When this video was recorded in 2012, the lead singer was 15 and the other two girls were 13. The band has been together since 2010. They just wrapped up a European tour and are taking a month off before resuming their world tour. Road of Resistance really launched this band and the live performance, even if you don't understand Japanese Road of Resistance has made a number of reactors emotional. Other hits include Pa Pa Ya, Megitsune, and Catch Me If You Can (and many more).
    There is a lore involving this group as they have had to deal with death and serious illness (they lost a guitarist and a singer). Finally, this band does a lot of crossover music as Oh Majanai is based on a 1936 polka hit, Megitsune is a 500 year old folk song, Meta Taro was a song sung by French Revolutionaries in the 1790's and Metali is a crossover with Indian pop music.

    I was watching a video of Slipknot playing with their new drummer, and the CZcams algorithm suggested Gimme Chocolate. Had no idea what I was getting into. 2 weeks later I have 3 CD's and a ticket to see them live later this year. Couldn't even tell you where to start, their discography has gems everywhere. These ladies, the band... the human condition at full throttle. Cheers and enjoy!

    This video went viral in 2013 and, consequently, is usually the first one reactors listen to. It's actually a music video with studio sound track dubbed over images of a live performance. I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a first listen to Babymetal. There is so much more to them and a proper live performance will show that. They are still going strong, now in their mid twenties, and the most successful Japanese group internationally.

  • @ShadowRyu
    @ShadowRyu Před 19 dny +9

    You are 100% correct. The lead singer Su(the middle one) was 15 in this and was the oldest. They are still going strong over 10 years after their debut album, with fans all over the world. They have shared the stage with big acts such as Slipknot, Judas priest, and many others.

  • @AxeSwipe2011
    @AxeSwipe2011 Před 20 dny +11

    Their Producer, Kei Kobayashi was a long-time metalhead who felt the metal scene in Japan was getting old and stagnant and needed an injection of youth. When he saw 11 year old Suzuka Nakamoto perfirm at the Karen Girls farewell concert, he was impressed by her stage presence and loud vocals and felt she could front a metal band and not get drowned out by the loud instruments.
    In 2010 Koba was put in charge of A!Muse's new school-aged Idol group Sakura Gakuin, of which Su was one of the founding members. With permission from A!Muse execs (but no additional funding) he created the experimental sub-unit Babymetal (then known as the "Heavy Music Club" as SG was school-themed) building it around Suzuka's vocal talents and then adding 11 year olds, Yui and Moa to give it an Idol feel.
    In 2013, Su graduated from SG and Babymetal went with her, becoming a fully separate group from SG (Yui and Moa continued doing both until their graduation in 2015).
    This video was recorded in January, 2013 at the Legend 1997 concert celebrating Su's 16th birthday. Yui and Moa were 14 at the time. The video went viral on CZcams in 2014.
    Su is now 26. Moa turns 25 on July 4th and new member Momoko (Yui left on 2018 due to health issues) is 21.
    They have had 2 great collaborations released this year already. "Leave It All Behind" with Thai artists F. Hero and Bodyslam and more recently "RATATATA" with Electric Callboy.

    I'm grateful that "Gimme chocolate" wasn't my very first BABYMETAL song. I'm not sure this would have worked for me (lifelong old-school metalhead here). All that I know is that "Catch me if you can" did and now I totally understand and enjoy "GC", specially live in person. I discovered them in a moment I had lost almost all my interest in music and it was a life-changing experience. I recovered my passion for music and even discovered many other bands I enjoy now. I also discovered that I like to travel to see new places with the excuse to see them live, haha...

    I was in a mid 2000's MetalCore band while I was in Highschool... We ended up getting to open up for bands like August Burns Red (Chameleon Christmas 2010)
    But, one of the reasons our band (and a few others) stood out was because we would all practice our "Stage Presence"... Ya know, Synchronized Crab-Core or something like that.
    For any aspiring performing musicians or bands out there, Take your Stage Show and Performance just as seriously as the Music itself. It will take you so much farther than you might imagine.

    Pretty much hit the nail on the head. This band was so good that they popularized their own sub genre of Metal called Kawaii Metal, which is basically as you describe it a more pop like form of metal. This was basically their debut song though and their music has definitely matured since then. Su metal's (the lead singer) voice especially has aged amazingly and she is recognized by many for her amazing voice. I hope you listen to some more from them.
    Particularly, Road to Resistance live in Japan, Rondo of Nightmare live at Budokan and Megitsune live are particularly good performances. Also, if you just want a clean listen to their vocal, Babymetal performing Monochrome on The First Take is also a really good listen.

  • @Filboid2000
    @Filboid2000 Před 20 dny +1

    Many members of The One will say that this song isn't among BABYMETAL's best - I beg to differ. Although BABYMETAL does have many songs that are better, this song defines what BABYMETAL is: heavy metal pleasantly mixed with J-pop without missing a beat - kawaii metal at its best, and one of the best videos of the "Yui Era" (more on that later).
    The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after you watch a few of them! Anyway . . . .
    You’ve opened a can of worms!
    BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the group in 2018 because of health concerns, and early in 2023 Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
    BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums with over fifty songs, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of recommended songs (along with suggested versions). The first sixteen are from what I've come to call "The Golden Age of BABYMETAL" or simply "The Yui Era". This list also includes all four songs of the BABYMETAL sub-group Black BABYMETAL (just Yui and Moa while Su is taking a break):

    You can use my CZcams playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty” (czcams.com/play/PLdhz2aj0pt4zPl0BZLevPUR9uHKQA27uj.html ) as a quick link to all of these videos; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list. Anyway . . . .
    Another recommendation (read "challenge"): react to an entire BABYMETAL concert. I suggest:
    "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" czcams.com/play/PLdBAj9hZ91wCao72oSqTMLrGpIDOqzR2Q.html
    and/or
    "Budokan Black Night" (2014) czcams.com/play/PLdBAj9hZ91wBwsBfjsKH9zWxA5YOOUkSI.html
    Both concerts are, in a word, incredible.
    One last thing: you need to treat BABYMETAL videos (ANY videos, for that matter) like MCU movies - they're not over until their over. Just because YOU think they're done doesn't necessarily mean that they are.
    Enjoy your trip down the foxhole! (You're in for a wild ride!!!)
    Keep rockin' BABYMETAL!!! (Sorry about the wall!)
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

    Yui, we love you! 🍅🥰 in fact they were children...14 at that time...and they did things on stage that would make grown men nervous and exhausted...the girls are very professional, top notch dancers

    Welcome to the foxhole. Many reactors start with gimme chocolate and are a little disturbed by the poppy style of the song. It's not an average BM style. They have many different style of songs, and most of them are not like that.
    I would recommend live version of monochrome maybe (czcams.com/video/8pvxCzhBsTM/video.html) or the fiesta style Papayaz (czcams.com/video/oO7Y8NsnkRg/video.html).
    And after that, well, any live song of BM are the good ones
    🙂🤟🤘

    As someone who's been a huge Babymetal fan since the beginning, I always hate when the people push a reactor to start with Gimme Chocolate, lol. It's probably the most commercialized and gimmicky song they have from their earlier years. Not that it's a bad song, but it really sets them up to not be taken super seriously, and isn't really representative of the level of music they make. Keep going, and always go with live videos when you can.

    Yes, Yes, they were abducted by corrupt metal producers, forced to dance in front of 50,000 violent metalheads, forced to dance for the Best Metal Vocalist award in the U.K., and the girl on the right was forced to write her thesis on the social effects of metal in college, even after 10 years of service. Recently, they were forced to play in front of 100,000 non-verbal metallers in culturally exclusive France. Their fans are crying when they see them.

    Nice reaction :) I liked your reaction but please be careful about stopping the video too soon. BabyMetal will sometimes put things in at the end of the video that you may miss if you stop it too early. For example, you missed the 'See You in the Mosh'sh Pit' at the end of this one. If you're looking for something outside of the ordinary, watch BabyMetal. They're extraordinary!

    THIS one is about the worst one you could have reacted too tbh - although it's very good. DO try and see some of their LIVE performances if you can - it's what they do, and you'll not see them at their best otherwise :D They are a genuine group and have been going for 14 years now - utterly unique within their own genre and by far one of the best live groups in that time period. Good reaction anyway!

    Its interesting that everyone brings up that they dont play any instruments as a primary observation. I can name countless metal/rock bands where the lead singer doesnt play an instrument. Not sure why this is always a "point" when people watch Babymetal?

  • @smashstuff86
    @smashstuff86 Před 18 dny

    I recommend staying away from fan compilations. They don't show the full power of a single BM performance. I recommend "Headbanger" and "Death" from the 1997 Legend S show (1997 being the birth year of the lead singer. The show is her 16th birthday celebration and...
    Most reactors react to this version of Death, and I would not want to deprive you of the amazing performance. But it would be nice to see a different reaction too. If you're interested in a double feature reaction, I would react to the Legend I version first (I think their first full performance of the song) followed with the Legend S version, which is the culmination of what BM were leading up to at that point. The end of a chapter and the start of the next one.
    And they have no songs called "Line."

    • @Ryujin170

      That's not the case. It only looks that way because they had a microscopic budget at the beginning. They had to slowly prove themselves to their management agency (who didn't create them) until they were finally granted the budget to get a live band, and the rest is history. They had dreams and plans of world dominance from the beginning; they just needed to make it happen. They have gimmicks and sometimes acted gimmicky in an comedic way, but they were not gimmicks themselves. Behind the fun there was focused ambition that is still playing out today.
