- In this episode, Sayu Rinpoche leaves Lyon for Marseille - a city that several of Sayu Rinpoche's French acquaintances advised not to go - quoting it's either "dangerous" or being "not a good representation of France". As a myth buster, Sayu Rinpoche nonetheless decided to travel there despite these warnings (on a purposely planned short trip). After exploring Quartier du Panier (Le Panier), including the area's famous graffitis and a giant, yet unique cathedral (Cathedrale de La Major/ The Marseille Cathedral), Sayu Rinpoche realized that he made a HUGE MISTAKE.......

I think your french friends watch too much the TV! In the news, they only talk about Marseille for football or gangsters things, giving to this city a very bad reputation. It may be a little bit cahotic living there but for sure visiting this city is a very nice idea! People are kind and life is cheaper than in Paris by far! Hope my comment will convince someone else to visit Marseille! Please let a comment if this is the case! :)
Thanks for making this video! I moved here a year ago and I've been so pleasantly surprised by this place. The people are super nice and relaxed, the weather is great, the nature is amazing, and there's so much to do... All of my friends who've visited me have left in shock because they initially thought this place was really dangerous, but it's not!
But yes, my first impression when I visited five years ago was different.
So, it's certainly improving in a positive direction!

I’m from there, and until recently Marseille was a hellhole, but it is improving and I am glad that you visited it. That being said, anyone visiting marseille should do a quick detour by Aix-en-Provence!
Yeah I'm so glad I was able to visit your amazing city even for just a few days! Now knowing the area better, I can definitely tell that in the future it's very likely that I'll make a series just focusing on Provence, which will certainly include Aix!!! 😁

For such a populous city, there didn't seem to be very many people walking around the plazas, streets, etc,
I live in Marseille and locals don't just walk around the city during fall and winter months it's very quite. That's for tourists to do and enjoy the calm and chaos free streets. Spring and summer months are quite chaotic when both locals and tourists storm every city center street, restaurant, bar, full beaches etc :)

Cities in general are becoming places to avoid, none is exempt from bad neighborhoods, the ones that tourists don't visit, e.g. Marseille's northern districts and the northern suburbs of Paris. Saying this as a former city dweller now a "refugee" in the countryside where crime is almost unheard of...

We just returned from a trip which included 4 nights in Marseille. While the Old Port (Vieux Port) is loaded with tourists and contains tons of shops, restaurants, bars, etc, there are also sizable swaths of this city that look like Little Mogadishu. Unless your hotel is within a certin radius of the Old Port, I'd give second thoughts about staying there.
Actually a lot of regular TGVs ARE double-deckers

I personally loved the city, I was there four years ago. My partner and I visited this year for a day ~ our car was broken into, all our things stolen and had the police tell us that “it’s normal it’s Marseille”. While I see the charm in Marseille, certainly traumatised. The train station has declined in the last four years and beautiful architecture vandalised with graffiti. Don’t see an improvement in the last four years but a decline sadly.
If the police was given power to do something about the underground situation, it would not be 'normal' because there is nothing normal when an area falls into chaos, corruption and high level deliquency.
I made the same experiences it is an overwhelming city and not really dangerous compared to other cities. Unfortunately I saw this video too late and went there also with a bit of fear but realized after one day that the things which are told are nonsense.

I live in south of France and I go sometimes to Marseille. It's not dangerous except perhaps in certain districts in the north of the town.
The food that you show is not of this region. The typical dishes are made of fish and for exemple the fish soup.
You can take a boat in the port and visit an island nearby. The surroundings are interesting with small cities along the sea but it's necessary to have a car

Such BS. Just returned from a week in Marseille, very safe. It's now my favorite city in France, even over Paris!
Nothing special in Marseilles city center. No more dangerous than any other city. The places where all the trafficking and crime is concentrated are in the northern districts of the city, about 15 miles from the city center and where tourists never go.

GUYS THIS IS FAKE
Don't listen to this video's recommendation. There are so many places that I would prioritize over Marseille. There are no lights at night everywhere it seems dark unlike Paris. The public transportation is awful There are not many museums cathedrals and restaurants that you can visit by public transportation. The main train station is like Gotham City. The city is very hilly and there is not much to do other than go to the port port where the restaurants will rip you off.
Idk, I just walked through the city during the night after a concert and there were plenty of lights. Also I don't agree about train station and activities. Public transport - I mean, I never used busses, but tram is perfect with a air conditioning, there is plenty of bikes to rent and a lot of roads for bikes, also metro is totally fine.
But I guess I just have different experience)
Americans, holiday in Vegas or AC please...

Utter bull....I have worked there on and off the last 20 years and love it so much I am buying an apartment there for my retirement. My favourite city in the world...(so far) !!!
