One of the most beautifully simple, profound, honest songs ever written about marriage.
And a great production to boot.

This never fails to make me cry. Why did Sondheim have to be such a bloody genius?

just been given the part of Harry for my Uni's production, and as much as I wanted Bobby, I absolutely cannot wait to sing this beautiful song...
I guess that makes me Sorry-Grateful, that or regretful-happy...

Keith is amazing. I've met and worked with him and I can't believe how phenomenal he is.

This is the first time I have ever heard this song - not much Sondheim in Australia, if you live outside Sydney that is. I've heard comment on Sorry/Grateful, usually negative, often cited as some of Sondheim's 'weak lyrics'. This song is wonderful, and must be taken in the particular vein of Sondheim's 'jaundiced & jaded' view of life. For me, Sondheim has always highlighted the banal, hopeless inanities and inequities of life - life as it really is. Schopenhauer shows that unhappiness is really our natural state, and the best that we can do is to try to reduce our misery - work to achieve enough happiness to keep us going. Stephen Sondheim taught me that, in a far less settled time of my life. The choices may have been mistaken, the choosing was not - you have to move on. Thank you, Stephen.

Thank you for this great comment. In a weird place in life and find this song relatable so I'm constantly spamming it. Never read through the comments until today. Really enjoyed your view on this. Then saw your name and instantly thought man this must be some kind of sign or me from the future lol

Bit concerned now. I have to sing this for the part of Harry tomorrow and I can't get to the end of the first verse without choking back tears.

I have no idea why people go on about the 2011 NPH concert performance and how great Colbert and Cryer are. Please, watch this, get over the TV guys.

We all have our particular tastes. I appreciate the subtle facial expressions of NPH, Patti Lupone was born to play Joanne (at least since Elaine Stritch died) and I think Colbert knocks this song out of the park. That's meant to take nothing away from this version.

Playing Harry was one of my favorite roles I ever played, and this production was the one I mainly watched to prepare for the show.

I'm not married yet and am older than Bobby. This song gives me so many doubts about marriage because I'm so imperfect and don't know what my life will be like if I include another imperfect person in it.

@Strawwbberry I know you can't always tell with actors, but that really comes across with his performance. Weirdly though, I just see him and think of Jeremy Paxman.

  • @NateSean

@TheNickKench Work with it. I wanted the part of Peter in Diary of Anne Frank, but I landed Mr. Dussel. It turned out to be a far better match.
One staple of acting. A lot of famous actors we know about today didn't get the part they originally auditioned for.

Doyle does not do the instrument things with all of his productions. I saw Sondheim's "Road Show" (formerly "Bounce" at the Public Theatre last year. Not a great show and I think Doyle's other shtick is getting old. As is the instrument thing. It worked great in Sweeney Todd and, so I hear, in Company. But I hope he finds something else!
