  • Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin, performing what might very well be the most touching and magical moment in the history of musical theater.
    Thank you, Stephen Sondheim.

To me, this is Sondheim's masterpiece. It truly is a one of a kind masterpiece. No other musical addresses the worth of the artist, the process, and the beauty of art as much as this show. Brilliantly through-composed not just for the sake of imitating opera, but each minute of music sets a mood. There are no cheap gimmicks here. No awkward pauses for pre-paid jokes by writers who don't care. No juke-box songs. THIS is what a musical should be. Full of heart, soul, and art.

I never "really" understood the meaning of this song until one morning when I was listening to it on headphones as I rode to work. My wife and I had just separated after 24 years of marriage and I had been depressed. After really hearing the song I realized that we were both moving on, and that we were doing so for all the right reasons. What an epiphany! Tears started rolling down my cheeks. And things just seemed to fit together better after that.

Wow. You really got the song! And it’s helped me as an artist to “move on”, trusting my instincts wherever it goes. “Don’t worry if your vision is new. Let others make that decision. They usually do.” So right on the mark!

When it first played on Broadway, they noted that there were many, many people who sat there quietly crying after last curtain. I know because I was one of the. As much as anyone would like to limit this to art and being an artist, this is so much more as noted by so many here. This is about living your life. And what happens when you think you're stuck. Life is about choices and looking for new experiences. Stop worrying where you're going, you've gone. Just keep moving on.
Trust that your instinct will lead you to where you need to be.

people who sat there quietly crying after last curtain. I know because I
      was one of them"
So was I, even after the Finale of Act 1.... Everyone was trying to not look at each other, trying to hide their tears....

I'm so proud of Stephen as his life seems to have been beautifully lived. He has created so many wonderful works that have brought inspiration, thought, joy, and art into my life and so many others. Rest in peace Stephen as you "move on".

I love "Sunday In The Park" so much. It is truly such a beautiful show in every sense of the word. It just gets better every time I watch it. So magical & emotional. Mostly, I think it's because of Bernadette & Mandy.
I've seen other productions, but it's just never the same. There's never that sensation they bring. Daniel Evans & Jenna Russell were perfectly fine, but they didn't have the magic these 2 do. Like they said on the DVD commentary, there's just SOMETHING about them in this show.

For me, it's a tossup between Sunday in the Park and Company as to which of Sondheim's shows it the most emotionally-wrenching; both get me every time. I remember listening to a podcast interview with Mandy Patinkin about Sunday in the Park a few years ago, and even a couple of decades later he couldn't get through talking about this song without crying.

I love this musical. These lyrics mean so much to me, but it kills me that they don't prod at my emotions the same way plenty of other, fairly thoughtlessly written musical theatre platitudes manage to. I find it hard to connect to this emotionally, even though it's still the best musical theatre there is. One day I hope I really can feel the beauty that I know I see.

I don't think I've ever been more disappointed by anything in my life, especially that I was literally called back to audition for the main character. I'm devastated and it may be silly little thing for the most people, but I was really hoping for something more. Something that matters. This feeling brought me to this song. This is a song that me as an artist need right now, in a moment like this one.

While the production was top-notch, with excellent vocals and a great cast, I had particular difficulty seeing anyone else in the role of 'Dot/Marie' except Bernadette. @DivaBehavior Yes, true. I think "Finishing the Hat" really makes you feel for George, and get inside his head, and understand the lonliness that's often required to be an artist. However, I do often get frustrated with the George character, but only because I so desperately wanted he and Dot to make it! lol. I think Bernadette is the quintessential Dot, because every time I listen to her "We Do Not Belong Together" I practically tear up. The Arden's Dot didn't achieve that emotional anguish.

@DivaBehavior I enjoyed the Arden's production a lot. Their George was wonderful, too. Obviously, he's no Patinkin, but he was a little more likeable...lol. But Dot is such a difficult character, and the actress who played her was very good. However, Dot is pretty funny, and this actress seemed to avoid all of the character's humor. Her opening "Sunday In The Park With George" was good, but there was none of the hilarious frustration and irritation that Bernadette put into it...
