Great advice. Thanks. I’m glad I could see the contents of the garage, it’s like mine in many ways. So your approach to it was what I sought. Also, it’s a limited space!! That was my take away. So many organizational videos don’t show the clutter I’m like - get real, where is the mower, snow blower, bikes, chipper ….etc. Empty it out is the best way to start solving the clutter!

Bonus tip: learn how to back one car in so that both driver doors are in the middle. You can park closer to the wall or your stuff and still get in the driver seat.

In addition to wearing a mask while using a leaf blower to blow out the garage, always wear eye protection. Little objects will ricochet off the walls and go airborne. Also, button your shirt all the way up to keep out dust and wear a baseball cap or bandana to keep that dust out of your hair. Lastly, protect your feet and don’t wear flip flops or open-toed shoes while working in and/or cleaning the garage. 👍

time estimates.... yeah that actually makes me feel better. i've been working HARD to 'quickly do xyz' so i can have space to do the thing i'm really trying to get to. and because it's not DONE, i feel like i haven't done anything. hearing you slate 2 days, then it took 4 plus some evenings...... that actually sounds a lot like my situations. so yeah it just feels good to know that sometimes it's not that you aren't working hard enough, or are slow, it's just some things really take WAY longer than anticipated.

I liked your video. My wife calls me an organized horder and tool collector. We had metal rack type shelving and cabinets in our garage. Lots of storage totes. Almost everything was tagged as to what was inside. Totes, cabinets drawers all had tags. My wife loved it because she could easily find stuff in "my" garage. And like you said, try to get everything off the floor.
Loved the tape idea! But I took it up several notches. Look up Swiss Trax. These colored interlocking tiles made the garage floor look great. And, like the tape, you could see in your backup camera where you were positioned at. We also had motion sensitive parking lasers. But they didn't always work so well.
I speak in the past tense because now our garage is empty. Not for reorganization. But for demolition. The foundation has deteriorated. And the garage needs to be rebuilt. So we HAVE to start over.

    • @MomCanFixIt
      @MomCanFixIt  Před 2 lety

Swiss Trax look really cool! But definitely more expensive than tape. 😆 I'm so sorry to hear you have to demolish your garage! I hope you have a beautiful, organized garage after it's rebuilt. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for this video. Just one suggestion. Move the trash barrels closer to the big garage doors so you dont have to pull out a car to take the trash out (or manuvuer the bulky trash barrel past a car to put it out on trash day.) My trash and recycle come on different days and recycle skips a week. There is jusy enough space between my car and the wall to double park 2 trash barrels. So every other week, the recycle barrel parks in front while the trash parks closer to the garage door. On the week recycle happens, when i move the emptied trash barrel into the garage, i rotate the recycle bin to be ready to take out. Both trash and recycle are the day after church nights so i just make putting out barrels a part of my church routine.

I agree with everything but taking everything out to start and allowing huge blocks of time. Some of us don’t have the option to pull everything out. For reasons such as lack of man power or living in an area where your stuff will take a walk if pulled outside. And some of us cannot work for hours at a time. Your garage looks awesome.

Setting a timer for an hour and just doing certain tasks is easier than devoting whole weekends if you don't have the time/energy to do that.

We have a deep metal building (48 x 24). We park 2 cars in front and have shop and apartment in back. Recently I was tired of all the junk so I moved out my truck and dragged all the junk from the shop to the stall where my truck parks. All of the stuff that was not structure like the shop table with vice was moved out. We had not seen the floor in those spots for a long time. Haha. I am in the middle of categorizing and making electrical, plumbing, wood (2x4, 2x6, 1x4, plywood, OSB), paint & paint brushes, tools to inventory what I do have. To put anything up on the wall I put wood studs on the metal purlins (got to love that hard metal) so I can mount OSB. I plan on using nails in OSB for main hanging of small stuff. I am also considering the rails that have hangars like Rubbermaid Fasttrack or something DIY. Finally I am going to move bikes back up high on the wall and move the garden tools out to the pump house using similar methods. Not a lot to do is there. *whew*

Dust and such in the garage can harbor mold and other bad allergens. Instead of blowing it out with a blower, which puts it in the air, Spray it with a mist of water, with our without bleach, and use a broom. Then scoop it up and throw it in the trash. Cleaned out my garage once and the mold gave me a terrible sinus infection. Next time, I mopped out the garage. MUCH better.

Definitely going to use the tip of the tape on ground to know how far my car is from the garage door. I have a treadmill on the wall facing the garage door so I have to pull in enough not to hit it. When I get out of the car always check the back of the car to see if I have enough room for the garage door. This gets old! Never had time to get a tennis ball so tape will work!

I totally agree with completely emptying the garage to start from scratch.
Here are some of my garage organization tips:
    - If you haven't used something in a year, then you probably don't need it..(make sure you're using your spouse people).
    - Visualize, measure and sketch a layout where you want to put storage, tools, outdoor or activity equipment, etc.
    - If you have room for an outdoor shed to store lawn equipment, then consider getting a shed for those items that get dirty (i.e. lawnmower).

    • @MomCanFixIt

I have not made a separate video about that but maybe I should! I used a hanger from Lowes called "Blue Hawk 3.94-in Black Steel Wheelbarrow Hanger". Because mine has a plastic tub, it didn't feel as secure as I'd like, so I added the bungie for extra security. With a metal tub, I think that hanger would work perfectly on its own and it should work fine with a 2-wheel one.

If raising that much dust, you will do well with a $40-ish half-mask respirator (3M makes several series) with P95 or P100 filters. They have a soft silicone gasket that lets you actually get a good seal with your face. P100 is better filtration, more restrictive. And the replaceable filters are _so_ much cheaper than new lungs!

@@debramason7237I agree with you on the tape. It’s the best solution. You don’t wack your head into a tennis ball hanging from the ceiling of your garage or trip over parking blocks. I was telling someone in 1 of my classes about this video today. She said she’d rather get hit in the head w/a tennis ball than trip over a parking block lol.

The tape trick also works better for me because I love backing into the garage. For instance, my grandpa uses these parking mats, kind of like the blocks you and @MomCanFixIt r talking about, to guide him w/his garage parking. When I saw him using them, I thought of doing this but it’s harder to feel the bump when you’re backing in. So then I thought I’ll just pull head in when I park in the garage. But this hack is absolutely genius. I’ll just put the tape in the front of the garage where I can see it in my backup camera when I’m pulling in.
