  • The FG Knot is one of the hardest knots to tie in all of fishing. However, it is the smallest, strongest, and best knot for connecting a smaller diameter braid and fluorocarbon. Other knots will hold but are just not as strong and smooth through the guides. Listen for the secret and implement into your knot.

    thanks for actually using real word line . I tried your method and personalty had trouble with holding the line in my mouth, used the tie to real method and wa la game changer hands down the neatest FG knot i ever tied. your tips are the best I've seen . just as a side note tying a much larger line is like ting rope small line takes fineness its not easy for us older guys. Thanks again.

    Best knot ever. Used to be a double uni guy for over 2 years. I had times where It would snap right at the knot. I learned the fg knot and when I get snagged, the knot never breaks! It will snap at the line. I do a method where I tie my main braid to my reel to create tension,

    Just for the record...I've been using the fg knot over a yr now,YOU DO NOT need the tension to tie this knot. But for some reason everyone on CZcams says you do. I hold the leader amd main line in my thumb and its perfect. No tension needed

    FG really changed my fishing. Perfecting this knot made my setups so freaking strong, I can drop line class and still have way more strength than I used to. Its totally wild. I also routinely run very long leaders since it flies through the guides.

  • @shimenfishingadventureride533

    FG knot serves me right. I haven't lost any fish up to 12 kgs in my jigging experience using this. Only once, but it did not slip, the mainline (40lbs braid) broke fighting a shark that took my Ruby Snapper as breakfast.

    Dude I bought the knot assist 2.0 and never looked back. For everyone saying it is too hard to tie, it is super easy with the tool. You can tie it anywhere, no problem.
    Also I cut my braid tag short and dab some gel superglue on it and spread it with a wet finger. Keeps the braid from fraying when going through your guides.

    I like the tip about setting the initial wrap pair. And rather than use my teeth, I control the tension in the braid, by wrapping a hitch around my right (in this video) little finger. Easier on my eyes, neck, & shoulders, & on heavy water, I can brace my forearms against my thighs or chair arm for better stability & control.

  • @fishncoach8699
    @fishncoach8699 Před 4 lety +2

    If you run the flouro up through your left hand coming in at your pinky and out at your index finger you don't have to hold tension with the spool... And that way when you are pinching the knot between your index and thumb you can release pressure, making it much easier to tie while on a boat...the tension doesn't have to be held from start to finish... I also like to run it a good ways before pulling too tight.. That way the pressure is spread through more of the knot and the end coils don't have all the tension and bite, therefore cutting your leader

    • @JohnCrews
      @JohnCrews  Před 3 lety +1

    I like to finish the knot with a Rizzuto finish knot (whip finish knot for fly tyers)... it prevents the half-hitches from coming undone... I also like to put a dab of super glue on the braid/fluoro junction for extra added insurance

    • @ikashibimauler
      @ikashibimauler Před 3 lety

      Rizzuto is a must. Only thing different I do is I burn about a half inch of tag down and when it melts close, I flatten it with my thumb. Never frays. I bet the superglue trick works great though too.

    • @ikashibimauler
      @ikashibimauler Před 3 lety +1

      Improved Albright knot is completely inferior to this knot. I used to use the Albright and its variants. For years I swore by it. The FG knot requires a lot of practice to tie correctly and quickly. But you can't go back once you get it. The difference is insane. It makes more difference on the water than any rod or reel or line choice you could make.

  • @ChrisAWare
    @ChrisAWare Před 4 lety +1

    I started tying this after watching your first video. I liked that you said you could tie a 20ft leader. But I had a weird issue after a few casts, where the knot spun around itself and became a loop in my line. I thought it was maybe that my flouro tag was catching, but cutting it as short and possible didn't help. Have you ever had this problem?

    • @archangel19
      @archangel19 Před 4 lety +1

      Had the same issue. The knot is catching the guides during the cast causing the braided to twist on itself off the spool. Try using just a dozen wraps and 4 half hitch knots to keep the knot small

    • @JohnCrews
      @JohnCrews  Před 4 lety +1

      Might be the guides. I haven’t had that happen

    • @fishncoach8699
      @fishncoach8699 Před 4 lety

      Usually when that happens it's a few coils that are stacked on top of each other instead of beside... Make sure you don't have any wraps that are laid over another.. When you finsih the fg shouldn't be wanting to bend

    • @ssmorgan1978
      @ssmorgan1978 Před 2 lety

      I have this happen with 1 particular spinning rod that I use .... and I am pretty sure it's because it has some micro guides on it. Its a Lew's Custom Black Spinning Combo. I blame the guides since this doesn't happen with any other setup that I have.

  • @Michaelpruis

    @fmlstewart Před 3 lety

    I agree the FG knot is the most efficient friction knot. It's small, it's smooth, and has the cool factor. The obvious problem with the FG is securing, or "locking" it off. You called those "overhand" knots, but they are a actually half hitches. Do you know why they're called hitches? Because they are NOT knots! Which, as everyone knows, is why everyone fights with this knot. The hitches untie and the knot unravels. Yeah, there are a number of tricks people use to fix that issue, they Rizzuto, super glue, burn, pray over, and beg the hitches not to untie. I never found a decent trick that was worth the effort. I went back to the Crazy Alberto and haven't given the FG another look. The CA is quick, strong enough, and goes through guides just fine. My question is, how often do you have to re tie the FG?
