  • Come along, as we chase Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 across the Overland Route with the Westbound Leg of the 2023 Home Plate Express. There were many fantastic sights to be had along the way, but the icing on the cake came when we arrived at the day's destination of Sidney. A cut of two, 3-pack well cars (used for carrying shipping containers) was left on the East end of the South Yard in Sidney-right where the 4014 needed to get through. SO, the UP Steam Crew set to work with the world's largest switch engine, as they used 4014 to shove the cars THROUGH the yard and out of the way. They then secured the cars and backed up to their final spot in the yard. As you'll see, not only does anything stand in the way of the Big Boy, but the UP Steam crew will ALWAYS be at the service of the Union Pacific Railroad; whether it be to maintain a fleet of steam locomotives, operate snow fighting equipment, or even help provide some switching duties to KEEP AMERICA MOVING. This video brought to you by yours truly, with some additional clips provided by NVRRP Executive Ken Valdez. Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! Copyright Nick Valdez Railroad Photography 2023.

I love Union Pacific 4014 but every time I watch 2 or more videos of the train it messes up my recommendations, youtube no longer understands context and thinks am into "big dudes". 😂😂

I remember reading that 844 used to work in a yard.
Edit: Another job well done, guys. ;)

Hi Nick . Well that was a packed video . I see "BigBoy " is called up to do some work from time to time . I 've noticed in recent shots there seems to be regular discharges of water . I don't recall seeing as many in past video's. But then again l don't recall what l was doing yesterday !!! 🤣🤣 Thanks Nick

I can’t help with what you were doing the other day, so. 😂 As far as the water, I THINK, and don’t quote me on this, it’s a way to regulate the heat in the boiler. I know it sounds contradictory, but if the boiler gets too hot, the whole engine EXPLODES. It’s been the bane of MANY a steam loco during their prominence, costing MANY lives.
As to the work, I remember reading that because the heritage units are on the active roster, UP Steam is required by law to have them do revenue service at least once a year. Again, don’t quote me on that, as I don’t know.

Not even close to the last. But it is incredible.

Why doesn't the engine recycle that water back to the boiler instead of dumping it on the ground?

It's just an unnecessary extra bunch of machinery to add, for very little benefit, since you'd actually have to send it to the tender, I think.
