    The Sewol ferry is so heart breaking. Kids were texting their parents that they loved them just in case they didn’t make it. There were other kids saying how scared they were and how much they desperately wanted to live. All while being told to stay where they were and not leave their rooms. By time they decided to take matters into their own hands, it was too late.
    Most of the victims were highschoolers from the same school. So much negligence caused so many innocent lives to be lost.

      Just like watching "democratic" India claiming to be "neutral"while buying over 500% more fossil fuels from POOtin´s Russia after this dictatorship illegally attacked and tried to colonise Ukraine.
      True values and ethics of a population are shown when they think no one are watching. Corruption are bad. Hypocrites are worse. Nations are going down due to good people doing nothing when evil and corruption are taking over.

    The El Pharo is a heart wrenching one, the 1st officer knew they were making a huge mistake but even though she tried multiple times she couldn't get the pig headed captain to change his mind. She was so sure they were sailing into disaster she even did things like memorize where the life jackets were on every part of the ship and prepared written, updated SOS messages beforehand. Just that trapped feeling of impending doom I got while reading her logs and the accident report has stuck with me.

      The previous captain had been fired for voicing safety concerns.
      While still the incorrect course of action, his decisions did not occur in a vacuum.

      Too true 👍 that overwhelming sensation of repeating a mistake you yourself have learned from yet others haven't.....nor will they entertain your hard-earned experience - really hard to stomach the emotions that the First Officer likely was feeling.

    I was on the Celebrity Xpedition when it wrecked in the Galapagos in 2019. The crew handled the situation perfectly and the cruise line took GOOD care of us. It was four free days in the Galapagos plus a full refund plus a FREE cruise of equal value! We even got to meet the CEO of Celebrity, who flew all the way from Paris. We have since been on four other Celebrity cruises and their service is top notch. I do not work for RC or have any affiliation.

      @@stephanielloyd4053 If he is talking about the Xpedition incident he is talking out his ass, there were no helicopters. Only transferrings from one RIB boat to another in rough seas. We went from small dive boats to the RIB boats, then to RIB boats that could take us to the Flora.

    I'm from the UK and I remember the container ship had one container with someone's personal possessions, the finders had to return everything to that emigrating family, but got a reward, because the stuff was shown online to find out whose stuff it was.
    BMW wrote off a container of motorcycles and let the people who found them, have them for a nominal fee. There were also some lost barrels, meant for brewing which the company who owned them, allowed some local farmers to have for their use, because again they were insurance write offs, because of the wreck. The people who sold stuff online, were traced and convicted of offences under Maritime law.
    Those laws, were first created in the late eighteenth century to stop the thriving smuggling trade in Cornwall, which sometimes involved causing wreckings, in order to steal goods, then updated in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

    MS Estonia was a fairly well used ferry already when it got that name, its fourth, I think. I traveled in it a few times when it was called Viking Sally, owned by Viking Lines and traveling between Finland and Sweden. The disaster certainly made my claustrophobia a lot worse even if it had been many years when I had last been in that ferry, those lower decks windowless cabins were a damn maze, it must have been a total nightmare trying to get out of there.

    El Faro case : two things. Captain could have been more logical as the first officer was aware of how things were going forward. Captain on the other hand followed the anticipated storm movement. However, the storm changed course which wasnt captains fault. However, once it was known they are into the storm, they still had time to move around. That is where the captain is at fault. Overconfident on himself and the ship he was commanding. Old ship, overconfident captain, and result is disaster.
    Not of such big proportion, but Edmund Fitzgerald and MV Derbyshire are two other examples of ships disappearing in storms. Derbyshire was really large ship, but storm took it down. Respect for mother nature and the brave hearts who sail.

    Scandinavian Star was a car and passenger ferry on route between Oslo, Norway and Frederikshavn, Denmark. During the night of April 7th, 1990, a fire broke out, which resulted in the death of 159 people. The police investigation concluded that the ship was set on fire byone or more arsonists.

    I remember a indepth analysis of the Morrow Castle fire. If the notable details were the oiled teak decks, near inches thick layers of oil based paint on everything. Like thick enough that walls that had exposed rivet heads that should have had what was effectively half a golf ball in rows were smooth due to paint buildup. Launching hardware was rusted and painted in place. The fire suppression system was clogged with rust or was just not working because of leaks. The alarms for fire were disconnected, ignored or prematurely turned off.
    The whole ship was basically an oil soaked tinderbox looking for a fire.

    My dad was an oil refinery technician and one part of his job was to sign off that a particular unit was safe for contractors to work on. He never made the assumption or took another's word for it that said unit was safe, because signing off on equipment that was not safe would not only get people killed, it could and usually did result in criminal charges for the person signing.
    At a different refinery than my dad worked in (one that had a very poor safety record) a technician signed off that a unit was safe to work on, the contractors opened a valve and allowed several tons of molten sulfur to pour over them. 5 people were killed and the guy who signed off on it got 5 life sentences for murder.

    What also makes the Herald Of Free Enterprise ferry disaster worse, was that many of the passengers were on a cheap trip, from a cheap newspaper offer, which was why the ship was so full. It's one of those national scandals in the UK, like that ferry that sank after the crew and captain escaped, leaving their fellow South Koreans to a watery grave, was in South Korea, only worse because they got away with. But ferry operating rules in the UK were tightened. P & O later got brought out by another company, who kept the name, but got into trouble for removing experienced crews to save money. 🥺

    I remember the Napoli beaching, the authorities beached the ship on a beach by a town the used to be known for piracy, people got more than steering wheels, there were bikes and cars in some containers.

    The government did not lie about the number of passengers who had passed away. I was in South Korea when this happened. Parents and relatives knew and saw what was happening. That captain was a criminal. The videos the kids sent out showed exactly what happened.
    Tragic is an understatement.
    My heart goes out to those parents and loved ones. This was so unnecessary.

    If you are in a place that you can not “skip ad”, postpone watching this. It is a great video to watch within screen reach. I have never seen so many extended time ads than here. Don’t get me wrong, it is a very good video, just beware.

    These modern ships are an engineering marvel. Good Captains and crews are awesome. But one mistake, one error in judgment can cost lives...and send a wonderful vessel to the seabed.

    Regarding the Morro Castle; there was a crew member who had a history of starting fires. He also had a major grudge against the Captain. I believe, based on other's investigation, that it absolutely was sabotage. The Captain's body was never found...

      It's not commen to be one mistake leading to a dissaster, mostly it's several things that happend before.
      Think about lack of education, or accepting things, etc.

    If I remember correctly the South Korean government at the time of that appalling ferry sinking, was later voted out of office and accused of corruption, just like the ferry company and the captain. So sad, a school lost so many students. 🥺

    I beleive the worst shipping disaster since WWII was the Philippine ferry Dona Paz with over 4,000 dead.

    Something else to note of El Faro: the captain was using a weather system that was six hours behind the current weather forecast. He thought Joaquin was still on the old predicted path which showed them well out of its way when, in truth, they were heading right for the eye of the storm. His first officer knew that they were making a mistake and heading toward the storm. She tried to convince him to listen to her advice to turn a different way to shelter from the storm, but he refused as he had been previously reprimanded for having acted cautiously in a different storm and didn't want to lose a chance at promotion to one of the company's new ships that were to be launching soon. The entire situation is maddeningly frustrating and heartbreaking.

    I remember the captain n cruise ship staff for Ms Estonia alerted all ships that were near by to come to the rescue

      Yep that's after the captain refused to accept that the ship was in trouble for the first 2 hour's that's why one of the passenger's phoned a family member back on land at home to say the ship was starting to sink,the passenger's family member phoned the emergency services for help and then the Coast Guard radioed the MS ESTONIA asking what the situation was on the ship only for the Captain to say everything was normal but was listing slightly but everything was under control but thankfully the Coast Guard wasnt convinced and sent lifeboats and helicopter to the ships location, Even when they was evacuating passenger's off the ship that selfish Captain abandoned ship when he should have made sure all passenger's was off the ship first and the Coast Guard had to threaten him to get back on the ship and do his job and tell them how many passenger's was on the ship

    Second story, it wasn't the crew who continued to tell the Korean people to stay on the ferry...it was a automatic message that was on a loop which continued because the captain left the ship in one of the active lifeboats😢

    It's not really fair to entirely blame the crew of the Herald of Free Enterprise. The issues happened mostly because they were being chronicly overworked by the company.
    That's why the bosun fell asleep, and why the officer overseeing loading didn't check the doors we closed (regulations required him to be on the car deck for loading, but also required him on the bridge for departure, he couldn't be both places at once so he left the car deck early to get to the bridge). The company had also decided that installing a camera on the car deck so the bridge could see if the bow doors were closed was an unneccessary expense, despite the fact another one of their ferries had done the exact same thing and sailed with the doors open the previous year (but luckily survived the crossing).

      At least there are trains sometimes, so you could go the long way round and occasionally bridges and tunnels. But sailing and flying will probably always to be dangerous, in the wrong conditions.

      I guess logic and statistic do not matter to you. The most dangerous ride are the one you take to the harbour or airport. The journey you take with ship or plane from there are the very safest way to travel statistically. BOTH when you calculate in time spent by that transportation means and when calculating by distance travelled.

      @@Mike-zx1kx statistics are no comfort if I’m in the statistic that falls from 35,000 feet. It’s not about the numbers, it’s about who is in control of the craft, whatever that craft may be. Did he/ she get enough sleep, is that person suicidal, is that person under the influence of drugs. No thank you, I will stay in control of my life.

      @@oldman9642 But my point are that you statistically are more likely to run into the moron ending your life due to own incapacitates, in car traffic than at flightlevel 35 or at sea. The most dangerous part of a journey are the travel to the port, sea or air, you are travelling to, to travel from. And stay clear of vans and truck. They are about 5-6% of volume but are involved in around 15% of fatal accidents.
      If statistics are no comfort to you then why relate to them at all. If you stay in your home you are more likely to die at a young age as well. Thing are you THINK you are in control of your life but anything you write tell the opposite. If you want to relate to your own life then statistics are one of the ways to be in control. But you choose not to use the tools at your hands, that can be a fatal mistake for you....Are you ready to continue your reckless ignorance of studied reality to guide you or are you ready to take REAL responsibility for yourself and others?

      Just because you hold on to the steering wheel in a car you need to realise you are not holding on to the controls of all the morons on the road. You apply same logic as Americans do when they buy a gun for protection when all stats show you dramatically increase your chance of dying by gun, by buying one.

      Last cruise I was on played "Titanic" as we were leaving Glacier Bay and striking small icebergs that you could feel in the ship.

    The El Faro is frustrating, maddening, saddening and just plain heartbreaking. There is an excellent video by a channel called Brick Immortar which goes into great detail on the disaster. Its title is 'Disastrous Indifference' and the title fits all too well as the captain was in contact with the company who he worked for, and I have to admit that his calmness was surprising given the horrifying situation. One of the biggest reasons (theory) for his actions were that he was going to be laid off after this trip and thought it would be okay to take the risk and thus save his job. Little did he know, but he was already on the way out, and the entire crew paid the price. The recordings of him talking to a rep whilst on a doomed ship and the letters that the First Mate sent explaining that she thought (correctly) that the ship was heading for disaster are horrifying. Greed will always be the downfall of humanity.

    Townsend Thorosen owned the herald of free enterprise, not P&O!
    Another Townsend Thorosen ship collided with another ship inbound for Felixstowe! Several lost their lives and the Townsend Thorosen ship the European Gateway capsized off Felixstowe. It lay there for 6 months before being salvaged. It returned under another owner and name. Imagine the ghosts on that ship!

    The reason the HMS Notingham survived was not due to a "Miricle" It was due to the insane damage control efforts of her crew. The crew worked for days on end stopping the spread of water and shoring compartments and hatches. The methods devised and employed by the enlisted crew are now taught during Royal Navy training.

    세월호 사고가 발생했던 그날 아침 뉴스에서 전원 구조 했다는 기사를 보고 안심했었지만 얼마 지나지않아 오보였다는걸 알게되고 나서는 안타까운 마음이 너무 들었다.
    전원 구조 되었길 바랬지만 그러지 않았는데 많은 시민들이 분노하고 슬퍼했었던 사건.. 다시는 이런 사고가 발생 하지 않았으면 하는 바램이 든다.

    The crew basically abandoned the ship, leaving the passengers to organise their own evacuation

    At the end of the day it is the marine architects who did not design a fool proof bow door. A simple cut off switch that deactivates all engine room spignels so the vessel can not proceed to sea, until everting is safe.

    Oh airbags have a high resale value. If you found an entire container full of them...sometimes insurance companies will "total" a relatively decent car if the airbag deploys because they are so expensive to replace.

    You think these are bad situations, you need to look into squid fishing, im not sure if it was a Chinese or South Korean ship but it's insane what they go through for 2yrs in the middle of the ocean with little food and sleep.

    One of the reasons proposed on the El Faro sinking that explained the captain's decision was the storm watching program he was using. The bridge crew was receiving accurate up to date information about the storm from NOAA and NWS, but he was basing his decision on a subscription service that had a 6 hour delay in information. Unfortunately for the bridge crew, the captain didn't listen to the crew's report that was received and instead listened to the subscription service. The engine stalled because there was a design flaw that only had one way for the engine to receive oil for lubrication and it was off to one side.     I have to say that the MS Estonia wasn't poorly built, it was a pretty good ship and wouldn't have sailed if it wasn't in good shape. There is a lot of controversy around the sinking but there is a pretty strong theory that MS Estonia was carrying military stuff, reports from the survivors say that before departing there was a delay where military cars stopped the traffic and transported a large cargo truck onto the ship. Many (to my knowledge) believe that there was Russian tech in there that they where shipping out to be analysed (or something like that), so it wouldn't be far fetched if the ferry was sabotaged and more precisely the hinges that the bow door was secured with. If memory serves some people did hear large bangs but thought nothing of it due to the storm. It was also prohibited, strangely, to go down to the ship and figure out what truly happened and strangely (don't remember if it was Sweden, Estonia or some other country) they covered the wreck in cement to "protect a grave site". So to know what truly happened is difficulty but surely the ship wasn't either in bad condition or poorly built.

    the official report for MS Estonia was somewhat false on the account of the Russian government sinking the ferry, because the ferry was hauling soviet weapons and intel on that voyage. Then trying to cover up the incident by attempting to fill a giant hole in the side of the ship with cement and would explain the quick and sudden sinking of the ship. An explosion was heard from the people on board and an American dive team was sent there to recover the bodies and that's when they found the giant hole. it's a conspiracy but there is a whole mountain of evidence suggesting otherwise.

    This would have been a better video or there hadn't been so many random shots of other vaguely similar ships that had nothing to do with the ones being discussed.
    Also, the vessel sinking at the start of your intro was a corvette, HTMS SUKHOTHAI. "Corvette" is a TYPE of warship, not a class. She was in fact Ratanakosin class. And she was most definitely NOT a battleship. "Battleship" is not synonymous with "warship." A "Battleship" is a type of warship with huge guns, thick armour and a large displacement that was made obsolete during WWII. There are no battleships in commission in any Navy today, and the last ones were decommissioned after Desert Storm, the MISSOURI being the last on 1 March 1992.
