As the narrative goes, fat is bad. Well, it's actually more nuanced than that. The type of fat you eat is more impactful on your health than the quantity. George Zaidan examines triglycerides, the varied molecules that make up fat, and how to identify which types of fat you are consuming.
Lesson by George Zaidan, animation by Igor Coric.

Tell me about it. I’m not complaining though
Its actualy a reversed piano jingle
Literally me😅

DAMNNNNN! Best lesson I've found so far!!!! easily understood and explained & I find it better when the cartoon is talking and explaining rather than not having any instructor indicate anything at all! keeps you more focused...
Agreed

thats probably because they dumbed it down a whole lot and tried to stay as simple as possible with the whole "good and bad thing". basically we need both saturated and unsaturated fats to an extant but in some circumbstances (that are becomming more and more common with nowadays) saturated fats can be more harmful than unsaturated. they just chose to keep it less complex than the real world, like schools also do. im pretty tired that you have to go to alternative education to get real information, that isnt too distorted with simplicity.
Saturated fats aren't bad for you though
learned more in this 4 minute video than a whole semester taking a nutrition course in college.

yeah call them unsaturated fat

Hi! Awesome question. If you go to our lesson page (there's a link at both the beginning and end of the video and in the description), in the Dig Deeper section, we have a resource that lists the many foods that tend to contain transfats. Hope this helps!

I learned all this stuff in high school. But it took the teacher at least 2 hours to explain it, whereas this video gives you all you need to know in less than 5 minutes. Learning done efficiently.
This video was AMAZINGLY animated! Very very big kudos to the animators :)
That made me understand fats lesson more than my teacher did 😂😂
Oh, yeah.😂👍
Finally, a smart short video that explains things sooo clearly. Thank you!
You got to love those short animated videos. 10 min of info packed video is worth more then hours in the classroom. Thanks!
+TED-Ed I absolutely loved this. The lesson, the animation, and the narration are all spot on. I especially loved the narrator's style. I'll be sharing this one.
Videos like these are incredible, I'm stumbling across it 9 years after its release and learning so much. Thank you so much, TED-Ed!!!!

Wow that was actually super informative. Didn’t realize how complex that subject is

I can show this to my grandma and see can understand, great explanation by George Zaidan. I show this to my 5-yearl old kid and he will love it, great animation by Igor Coric.
So, I've been around and about finding resources for my BioChem Class and youtube brought me here. Best four and a half minute of my day tbh.
This is misleading, while the presentation addresses good/ bad fats, it is never stated why a specific fat is unhealthy other than molecular shape. I would have liked to know why that specific molecular shape is bad vs just telling me don't eat it....
How is it misleading then ? It tells you the right things, it doesn't lead you into the wrong direction.
@Nova, you should probably read my comment fully before responding.
***** I do feel it wasnt explained enough. I used misleading because the title of the article is " What is fat". I feel that the video did not provide sufficient evidence to explain the main purpose of creating the video in the first place. I do like the video a lot, it's very well done and has a high production value, I commented because I would like to see more videos like it or additional explanations.
captaindrywal123 I drink a glass of olive oil a day will I get fat?
captaindrywal123 Thank you sir.But it was a joke. Also most of the olive oil would not be absorbed as it would act as a laxative.
👌👌 👍 TED Ed always uploads excellent videos. Their moto is worth it "Lessons Worth Sharing". Their animation style is very unique.

Wow, simplified some rather complex chemistry!
Blah Bleh And I learned more from this simplified version than the complex version they give you at school. It’s also not boring unlike school.
This is like a life hack: look for Partially Hydrogenated and it's unhealthy.
We watched this in school. Im Swedish. I understand everything in english now but cant translate the words to swedish.
Robert, good info, thanks for telling me!
Does TED-Ed do retractions? Now that the diet-heart hypothesis has been thoroughly debunked and saturated fats have been tested many times and found to have no correlation with heart disease, will TED-Ed release a new video or change this one?
Am doing A level chemistry and biology and this really links stuff up in an amazing way. Thanks a bunch, great video

Very motivated video when I have to prepare for my test and paper I just come here and it’s way for me to go 🥺💕love it
Loved the animation,well explained.
Awesome video! It's really accurate!
**There could have been some details describing how the shape of the fat determines it's phase; solid or liquid. Since saturated fats have no double bonds (thus no "kinks"), they can pack their fatty acid tails on top of each other more neatly and thus most of them are solids at room temp. However, the double bonds in unsaturated fats make "kinks" which interfere with the packing of fatty acid tails, thus most unsaturated fats are liquid at room temp.
I like it when the cells blink. Aww
That was one of the best videos ive ever seen in my hole life
Thank you soooo much
thanks! you have a very high mastery on the subject.
try to drink the entire bottle of Olive Oil in the same way you eat Pancakes to see what happen !
Coconut oil has high saturated fat content, yet its one of the healthiest oil to consume. Confusing, isn't it?
Not at all if you actually research the role of saturated fats in body.
Not according to www.nutritonfacts.org. Of course, the healthiest fats are not from a bottle. They come from whole foods, like nuts, seeds, and avocados. Here is a video from the same source: nutritionfacts.org/video/what-about-coconuts-coconut-milk-and-coconut-oil-mcts/

great video!!!
I love the animation... and that guy with one eye too!😊💖
I already knew everything in this video, and EXACTLY, it's not how much fat you eat, it's what type of fat. Unsaturated C=C bonds (C double bond C) are easier to break (such as when you exercise) than saturated C-C bonds (C single bond C). Exact same concept as calories, it's not how much calories you consume, in fact, calorie is a unit of ENERGY. Foods may contain varying masses, varying calories, but it also depends on what nutrients it contain, such as eating smaller amount with less calories may have higher carbohydrates and saturated fat content than an alternative.
Zetsuke4
That's why French and Italian are some of the healthiest people on Earth.
What about coconut oil ? It's a HEALTHY saturated fat.
NO! WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!
+Jériss DuFond no it not. IT IS BAD for ur healthy
+Black Boy Plant based saturated fats are healthier for you than Animal based saturated fats. The fatty acids palmitic and stearic (found in animals) increase LDL's (low density lipoprotein) while Lauric and Myristic acid (found in Plants) increase total cholesterol but is predominantly HDL (High density lipoprotein) the healthier cholesterol.
+Cassandra McLean It is actually healthy for you. A short explnation would be that it's chain is short thus get readily absorbed by the body in wich the energy is used right away. So saying that you are doing an activity would mean that the fat is not stored. There are other reasons as to why it is good. Try researching legitimate scientific based websites or books.
+Black Boy yes it is good. So some research before posting dumb stuff.
Very clear explanation, once again... Thank you for the fantastic job you make...

That it was partially hydrogenated? Or rather, there was transfat or saturated fat?
Fat is not much of the problem but calories. Any fat food can cause obesity problem
George Zaiden wrote his first book not that long ago-give it a read! It’s creatively written and keeps your attention!
I LOVE this type of animation
Olive oil is mono-saturated fat. And like all oil it will oxidise in the body into free radicals and cause inflammation. So technically all oils are bad to consume especially when it comes in contact with heat. This video fail to talk about how heat changes the properties of things.
Flash Man
Any oil is bad if you heat it at it's smoke point.
Saturated fat is not bad for you.
I agree, this guy probably made it easier for people who don't study biochemistry, biology, or chemistry. It's about moderations. Saturated fat is useful since they are harder to break, but in the modern day, food is very available for lots of us, so we don't have to worry about keeping food in our body that slowly releases energy for a long time. We eat a lot, and we don't want to look fat or be fat, so nowadays, unlike humans from thousands years ago, we want faster energy that uses up and is gone fast, and we eat more often (sugar, starch, carbohydrates).
Zetsuke4 didnt you listen to the video? he said saturated fat is bad for you IN EXCESS.
That video was really helpful, now I got 50/50 in technology. Thanks for this video please add more
