- Tape mache - could it work as a substitute for 'real' paper mache? I think it's promising for temporary projects, like masks, but there are both pros and cons for the idea. Let us know what you think of the idea in the comments below.
If we can find the kind of tape that was used in the video on the @Mr. Otter Art Studio YT channel, we could do a lot more experiments. It looked much more 'paper mache-like' than the tape I used. You can find the video that inspired my experiments here: • Wet N Stick Art Tape M...
The name of the tape she used in that video is Creativity Street Wet N' Stick Art Tape, and it's "Currently unavailable" on the only listing that I found online. You can check the link if you'd like to see what the product looks like: amzn.to/3WKOjxE
The Nextape Gentle Paper Tape that I used in my video is on amazon here: amzn.to/3wy5d7U
If you'd like to play around with the idea to make a fast mask, you could use the fast, free blank mask form, here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/ea...
I really wouldn't use the tape for artwork that you hope to keep for a long time, or for masks that will be used in a play. Real paper mache is much better for permanent work, but the tape is kind of fun to play with.
You can see the patterns for the masks and sculptures behind me in the video here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/pa...
And if I ever get the feathers on those silly bird masks, I'll put the patterns for them on that page, too. 😊

The thing that I like about you is that you are willing to learn from others. try new things and teach others what you know. You are so kind. Thanks for the video and I hope the new projects work out great. 😉😀😀😀😎
Thanks Alan. You always say the nicest things. 😊

Thanks but I do have my faults.
I still have a mask that I made in high school that was made out of the tape they use in hospitals for making a cast. Trying to look it up it I think it is called casting or cast tape. It can be smoothed over while it is wet, can stretch to fit weird shapes, and if I remember right it can be sanded once dry. Though you may want to put a few layers on if you are sanding. You probably already tried it, but I thought to mention it just in case.
I have tried it - we can find it as plaster cloth or plaster bandages. I really like using it over a clay model, and then add details with paper mache or paper mache clay. It's really strong, and lasts a long time. Now that you've reminded me, I think I should do another project with it. 😊
I love your videos. Thank you for sharing them with us ❤️
You are so welcome! 😊
You are a brilliant artist! I could look at your beautiful animal masks all day. They are a delightful treat for the eye. Your attention to detail is breathtaking -- totally inspired. I'm a fan.
How clever to use paper medical tape as a fast mess free mache option. I’m excited to see the bird masks decorated! Great colors in the inspiration photos. One idea I had while watching was I wonder how strips wallpaper would work as mache? It has a wet activated glue on the back. I’m going yo experiment with an old roll I have around and see how it behaves in strips!! Thank you Joni!! 🎉
Wallpaper - that never occurred to me! We did find the tape, and it's really expensive - over $70 - so I can't wait to see how your experiments turn out!
I wish I had known about tape mache when my boys were young. I think it would be comfortable for them and last as long as their interest in the character lasted. I now have great great grandsons to think about and you have just helped me a lot.
I'm glad you like the idea. Have fun!
I wish I could hang out and do crafts with Johnny once in a while.
I was just thinking about you this morning… wanting to do something with paper maché clay, but I didn’t want to use toilet paper. 😅 Maybe I’ll try this!
Sure - why not! It might not last forever, but it could be fun. 😊
And, by the way - you can always use recycled paper in paper mache clay - it just takes longer to soak to break down the fibers. Using hot water helps.
Another wonderful video. I'm itching to get back to making things - you are such an inspiration. Love from Mel in the UK xxx
Your tutorials are so wonderful and you make things easy to understand. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. Your sweetness comes through in your videos!!! I'm really inspired to create after watching you teach :)
I'm so glad! 😊
This is awesome Jonni!Love it I can't wait to see how the birds turn out. That soft tape can make a nice liner for any Mask.Dare I say I have many ideas for this?lol.😅🫠🙏💯❣️♨️
That's great! I can't wait to see what you think of the idea when you have time to play around with it. 😊
Hi! Greetings from Chile! Ive used this technique in the past and its lovely! I dont know the actual name of the tape, but you can get it from carboard box suppliers or art stores, I havent seen them in Colors, It is usually brown, broad, and really big, so you can tear it up with your fingers and use it just like paper Maché and get a "smother" finish with the torn edges. Just dip the piece in water, drop the excess, and voilá! You can use it for a quick first layer and finnish it off with the traditional paste and toilet paper for a "best of both worlds" result. It is used to seal photo frames and cardboard boxes, opaque exterior and shiny interior (water activated glue), best of luck!
Thank you! We found some that I could order, and I should be able to start playing with it next week. I'll try your techniques when it arrives. The tape I ordered is here: amzn.to/3wDUARa - does that look like the type you mentioned? It says it's stretchy, and I really like that idea. 😊
@@UltimatePaperMache It is! but, its not stretchy at all tho, that would be kinda nice!
@@UltimatePaperMache As I'm sure you've found out by now, when the product description mentioned stretching, what they meant was it was used for stretching watercolor paper - to prevent buckling when wet paint applied. I'm pretty sure you already had that in your hand at the 2:00 mark in video.
You could probably make miniature paper Maché sculptures with that paper tape as well!
Maybe - that would be interesting. Do you make miniature sculptures?
These are awesome! Can’t wait to see finished product!😋
I hope they come out OK - I've never done anything with feathers before, so wish me luck! 😊
Absolutely love your videos ❤️
Thank you so much!! 😊
Hi from Southwest Minnesota! It looks like Dick Blick may have the tape online.
Thanks - I checked and they do have a similar product, but it's way over my budget. Thanks for looking, though! 😊
Hi Jonni, The Pacon site lists resale sources for the tape. You have to dig for it. You'll find it in the "tapes" section and the links are a few clicks in. Blick is one that lists the tape on their site. I would put links here in the comments but they don't seem to work.
Thanks, Terry. A few people have directed me to that source, and it looks like that tape is way too expensive for me to play with. Thanks for checking, though.
the reinforced gummed kraft tape that you show at the beguining of the video exist also in no-reinforced and in white too, look at bookbinding supplies or frame work supplies, you may find it there.
Thanks, Marry. I'll check that out. Someone did send me a link to some non-reinforced brown tape, and I ordered some. I should have a chance to play with it next week. 😊
I asked on Amazon how sticky is the "Pacon Wet n Stick tape" from the original video (the brand and type is shown at the beginning of the video). Here is the response I got..."The tape sticks as well as glue stick, but not as well as white glue. Easy for children to use if they don't mind licking it. I always have a damp sponge available for those not comfortable licking the tape."
Your video mentions the wrong brand and name for the wet and stick tape. Creativity Street brand is the masking tape, not the wet and stick tape.
Thanks for researching this for us. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to lick any tape. I did order some wet and stick packing tape but I've only played around for a few minutes. I'm not very excited about it yet, but maybe when I have more time I'll like it better. The kind the lady was using in the video is way too expensive for most of us.
Nexcare tape is at Canadian dollar stores.
That's great! 😊
I wonder if you cut the water activated shippubg paper tape into strips, maybe avoiding the reinforcement strings somewhat, if it would work.
But yes the medical paper tape is great and you can purchase non-3m brands thar would be much cheaper.
Maybe - but I don't thin I'll mess with the water-activated tape anymore. It didn't turn out as nice as I had hoped. I still like the medical tape, though - I'm just not quite sure when we would use it.
Have you tried the water activated craft paper tape? No reinforcements and its made from gummed craft paper and I’ve seen people use it for making dress forms for sewing.
Wondering if cutting wallpaper would work. ¥
One of our other viewers said she thought it would. I don't have any on hand so I can't try it.
Looneng makes a tape at Amazon .
I put in wet and stick tape and it came up...several sizes...there share link I can't get to work .
Hmm - I searched for Looneng tape and it didn't come up, but they show different products to different people. If anyone sees it and can get a link to work, I'd like to see it.
I just found it! And I ordered some - it looks like it will be exactly what we need, but we won't know for sure until we find it. Thanks for the tip (I don't know why I couldn't find it the first time I tried, but amazon is weird sometimes.) The direct link is: amzn.to/3HiE79V
What about net drywall tape? Its cheap sticks with water and its very flexible
I've never seen that kind. I've used the kind that just a strip of paper, and the kind that is basically a plastic grid. Where do we find the kind you mentioned?
@@UltimatePaperMache home dipot or lowes or any hardwarestore. There two kinds the tape style and the net tape its to adhesive more easily a crack line etc smoother
I wrote the manufacture ..still no answer
It's around 16.00 American.
Is that the cost of the tape that you found? The ones I found were about $2 each, but they come in packs of two, for around $4. But some on the same page cost more - for no obvious reason.
@@UltimatePaperMache Yes. It's 2.75 " x 375'. But they have an 8 pk for 58.00 and that comes to about half of the 15.00. I couldn't find many until I searched Water Activated Tape.
Thought I'd say how much I love your...well everything. Has made me want to do this again. By again I mean I haven't done this 1966 in 6th grade. I made a head for a hand puppet and we put on a play. She was a beautiful princess in 1966. Very very pink with a square head. LOL. She was made of paste and newspaper and painted with poster paint. I think I can do better now.
So cute! Have you ever tried marking an automaton with your paper mache? There’s someone I follow on instagram who makes little birds and all sorts of things with it and they are amazing. I’m sure yours would be too. If you have a video for one you did could you link it? Thanks! ❤
I have no idea how to do that, but it does sound fun. I'm not very mechanically oriented, though, so my sculptures don't move around much. 😊
@@UltimatePaperMache thank you! I worry about the same thing, but what I’ve found on CZcams it seems the mechanics are simpler than one might think. I’m just not sure how the paper mache is put together so it allows the wings to bend etc. thanks anyway - you’re the best! I love watching your channel.
What’s that software called again that you use for the form?
Do you mean the software I use to make the lines straight?
@@UltimatePaperMache yes
how about cutting paper into strips and dragging through a 'glue' to stick. watered down white glue, cooked flour and water, etc,
Yes, that works - that's how we usually do paper mache, in fact. And it will last for a lot longer than the tape, but it's a bit messier. Lot of ways to do paper mache. 😊
Be careful of what tape you use as often the adhesive is toxic and should not be used near a person’s face. I found this out because a while back I looked up those stickers grocery stores put on produce. I was wondering about the ink. I found out that the paper is harmless, but the adhesive is toxic. Shocking, but true.
Wow - that is not good. Do you mean the adhesive that's stuck right on the apples is toxic? The tape I used for this experiment was made for skin, so it should be Ok. But I've just ordered some brown paper tape to play with. How would we research to find out if it's save to use for masks?
What's the matter with masking tape? I've made several masks out of masking tape and had no problems.
Whenever I've used it, the corners curl up. It's intentionally designed with an adhesive that will come off easily, because it's used by painters. I'm surprised that you were able to find some that doesn't curl up - what brand are you using?
