Ur on point with ur assessment. I watched many early bboys dance in the mid 70s. I watched "Cholly Rock" dance a few times. He would dance to the entire record. There were burning and go off, aspects, that were part of his repertoire. Beaver, on the other hand, and whose name is not mentioned enough, seemed to usher in a dance style that is closer to what we see today. To me, Hip Hop, draws from the scene that was happening in the Plaza Tunnel (Burning)...this is based on what was told to me by individuals that attended these parties.

The go off is inherent to being black so it’s natural, to imply it has influence is it then that influence would have to be from a different culture the same as the rock dance. Black American music is not natural to Puerto Ricans so they’re being influenced by something out dude their native culture. What I don’t like about theses comments is you are failing to recognize that funk is black American ethnic music you are throwing out there like it’s some random neutral music that both groups cater to. There has never ever been any Puerto Rican funk bands or music before this not after this . One group is dancing naturally to their native music and the other is being influenced by a music that’s not native to their culture . I like the explanation and the breakdown of the two dances but this theme of reducing black American music down to just American implies it has not owner and that it’s some sort of neutral genre !

Absolutely, the context of this discussion needs being mentioned.

One of the differences is...the Rock dance borrows moves from the esthetic of dance in black culture while the dance is centered around black funk music, while Burning and the go off is an extension or continuum of black American dance.

This is a very racially charged perspective with not nearly enough nuance for me...the key to understanding any kind of history is recognizing nuance
