  • I’ve ridden plus and fat bikes for a few years now, but I’ve never done a back to back comparison of the two sizes. In this video, I take my Surly Ice Cream Truck up and down the same trail twice, once with 26x4.8” tires and next with 29x3.0” tires to see how they stack up.
    Unfortunately it was getting dark on the 29+ ride so the video quality suffered toward the end of the ride, but hopefully you can still see how my ride compared on the same sections of trail on the two different tire sizes.

    Kudos for getting that high on that trail! That's a super chunky trail! Interesting comparison. I don't know many people that like descending that type of trail. I personally like it. It's super challenging to hold your line, and I think it's pretty cool your going down a creek bed🤘 Cool video!

    Just bought my first 29+ bike: Jones Plus LWB w/ Truss Fork (ALL my bikes are rigid and steel. Suspension is a waste of time.). Wouldn't trade it for the world. Most comfortable bike I've ever owned. These wheels roll over anything! And now that I've seen this movie, I think I'm going to take my old Surly Pugsley and turn it into a 29er, too. Why not?! Too much fun!

    Awesome video my friend.
    I ride 2 fat bikes.
    On one ride I quite often change PSI‘s. This does mean I have to stop for a minute or two but I have no problem with that.
    This is one of the joys of fat tires. Run them hard and they are pretty much as fast as any other tire, run them medium and they do everything okay. Run them soft and they can do things no other tire can and I love this versatility that no other tire can bring on one ride

    Each summer I'm out for a long tour, with my Bombtrack Beyond 2adv plus, 29x3, than I have a trailer (radicaldesign cyclone) and 3 bags.
    I have to admit that a 4" or 4.8" in technical terrain is really nicer from what I see. But on mixed terrain, sometime road, gravel, grass etc... I'm very happy with the 29x3.
    Excellent grip, comfort, and for long rides on asphalt I can put some air in the tires and (if the wind does not blow on my face) I can keep up 30kmh loaded like a mule for some extent.
    I wanted to try larger, but the bombtrack beyond does not fit larger than 3",, than I'm afraid that for long rides it will really increase the pain.
    Nice video

    Very cool comparison. I recently had a suspension fork installed on my fat bike which has 26" tires and I sure enjoy the ability to basically ride anything as long as I can keep the wheels turning. You do notice the the weight of those big tires though, so i've been curious about a lighter summer wheelset. It's interesting to see a side by side comparison.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před 2 lety

      The ICT has an oversized head tube with a cane creek headset that can run both a straight and tapered steerer tube with a specific crown race for each. I use a Rockshox Bluto for my 29+ set up so it’s a tapered steerer.

    Exactly my conundrum right now... Do I get a Krampus or Ice Cream Truck? I live near Seattle and will use the bike for fun rides (I also have an Evil Following MB, so the Surly will be my casual bike), riding with my 6 year old daughter, grocery getter, light touring, and hunting, so I need to be able to load it down with gear. What hub did you run on the 29+ wheelset? Could I run a Boost hub with spacers on the ICT? Kind of leaning that way at the moment, especially with the new seafoam green color.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před 3 lety +1

      If you plan to do anything in snow or sand, there’s no replacement for a full fat tire. I’m running DT Swiss 350 hubs that are the 197x12 and 150x15 hub spacing of the ICT. Spacers tend to only work with small differences in hub spacing so using a boost wheelset wouldn’t work. I’d probably get the ICT if you have any need for full fat and then get a 29+ wheelset so you can ride it in all conditions. You could also look into the Wednesday if you’re looking for something a little cheaper and don’t need to run a 4.8-5.0” tire (it’ll clear a 4.6”).

I was thinking on buying this frameset and building 29x3 wheels as a solution for the massive issue with mud we've got here in the Basque Country but I was put off by the small clearance between the rear tire and the seat tube. I was wondering what your opinion is about it and whether you could tell me how many millimeters there are between the rear tire and the seat tube. THANK YOU AGAIN!! JUST SUBSCRIBED!

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před 3 lety

      I just measured and and have anywhere from 12 to 19 mm of clearance in the rear depending on where you measure. It is set up single speed right now so it may have a little bigger clearance because it’s slid back a little in the drop outs, but I would guess it’s no more than 2-3mm back from normal. So three years later what do you ride most often? I just got a ICT. My 29+ just sits gathering dust now. I'm having way more fun on 26 x 4.8 than I ever did on my 29 x 3. I run 6 psi tubeless vs 25 psi. No need for suspension. Comparing my strava routes I'm slightly slower on the climbs but faster on the downhills and about the same on the flats. The trails I ride are mostly technical with some fire roads.

    • @RideYearRound
      @RideYearRound  Před 3 lety +1

      I’ve ridden 29+ in desert washes quite a few times and it does much better than a normal tire, but it’ll never be as good in soft situations as a fat tire. If you’re riding mostly in soft sand, a 3.8-4.0” tire would probably be better, but a 29x3.0” would still do great if you ran a lower pressure and/or only part of your trail looked like that. 29+ definitely requires less energy to pedal in my experience due to lower rolling resistance and lighter weight.

      @@RideYearRound That's probably the way I'll go - a Surley ECR. I bikepack out here in Nevada (cross the desert/camp/live off the bike) and the problem is we have to carry all our water to use for days at a time. There comes a point where you're so slow on a bike from the frictional forces that you really can't make it (not enough water) or have to pre-run it on a motorcycle and hide stashes of water/food along the way. I'm patient and would love a fat bike but concerned I'll be wasting money because it just takes too much energy to push to be a bikepacking bike, too slow. If you ever get the chance Nevada and especially Utah have awesome trails that go on for 100s of miles. Moab is good for day trips.
