About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Freshly showered Glenn is my favorite Glenn.
That's what she said 😂😂😂😂
You’re clearly not familiar with shirtless Glenn.
Or maybe he is just greasy from not showering? :D
It’s best to be clean when you’re doing dirty work

“F-you, Glenn” will now be replaced by “You’re full of $hit, Glenn.” Thanks for doing what you do!

Hi Glenn from the UK. I went to see a band over the weekend, and one of the support bands caught my attention. (Knife Brides) His guitar tone sounded great.....heavy and articulate. He was playing a EVH 5150 lunch box through and Zilla cab. I chatted to him after the gig, and asked him about his speakers. He instantly looked so happy that someone was talking to him about speakers and not just the amp. The cab was loaded with greenbacks btw.
Everybody else: Watching the video...
Guitarists: Watching Glenn's hair drying...

There are 3 solid reasons to have more than one amp. 1. Because it's fuqin cool. 2. Because you like it. 3. Everything eventually comes full circle. And when it does. They are worth a pretty penny. In 1981 you would see junk yards full of late 60s early 70s muscle cars. Just sitting there rotting away. Then in 1996 people decided. "You know what? I really liked those cars, they were fuqin cool". So then people started restoring them. Then by 2004 you'd see those cars at a Barrett Jackson auction going for 6 figures. Why? Because cool sh:t always come full circle. And when they do, they're very sought after. Hell 40 year old grown azz men are paying hundreds and maybe even thousands to buy their favorite hot wheels and GI Joe toys. Because they liked them. They were cool. Now they want to own them again. Today We have the technology to emulate any amp on the planet. Right now. You don't even need to own an amp. And that's awesome. But tube amps will come full circle. And when they do. They will fetch astronomical prices. Why you ask. Because they're fuqin cool. People like them.
Yeah, I am converting to modeling, but that circle is definitely going to come around. Some band will release an album that everyone loves, and when they are asked what IRs they used or what modeling gear they have, their answer will be "We just cranked some Marshalls and put a mic in front of it" and the guitar crowd will run out and buy real amps again. It reminds me of the late 80s and early 90s when everyone was going all rackmount. Instead of a tube amp, people were buying power amps and preamps because high gain amps weren't nearly as common as they are now. Then high gain tube amps became more common, so everyone went back to tube amps. Then modeling came around. The pendulum will come back as it always does.
Right. But other than saying you own one, what's the benefit these days of using an actual 80s Era Marshall vs a modeler? With cars you can't magically make the 2023 supra the same as a 94 supra. Lol
@@SirHeadly84 It's called preference. It's still a valid reason to want something, lol.
@@SirHeadly84 Also, to take it a step further, it speaks volumes that you can still have a fully functional 80s era Marshall. Will we be able to say the same thing about a Helix in 40 years? I doubt it.
The rackmount craze is a great example of how things come into fashion and then disappear again. I kind of think the trends change around more and more elaborate rigs VS simple rigs. Like you have everything you ever wanted in your signal chain then then one day you plug straight in to an amp and it sounds so much better in that moment. Or when you have a super complicated pedal board and you build a simple 2nd board just for fun and it's like "holy shit this board with 4 pedals on it sounds SO MUCH better". Now that you can have modelling and a simple rig, one pedal, power amp, cab, I don't know if those people will go back just because it's so easy. Although maybe a lunchbox EVH head and cab is just as easy.
I use amp sims when I gig. Guess what……..No one cares….No one knows or cares. Everyone loves what they hear, not what they see. Never had a complaint. Ever. Even from musicians. I guess it’s a strange phenomenon that I practice more than I complain? Maybe that I spend more time playing than paying? It’s a weird concept. I spent waaaaay more money on the PA system speakers for the venues that I run my equipment into that people actually hear the music through and the quality of the sound THROUGH THE SPEAKERS is the heart and soul of the show. Also knowing how to turn EQ knobs kinda helps a bit. What a friggin concept???
How do you get your sims? You use a multi effects processor? Could you share more about your rig? Reaching out from India.
Literally the only people who care are guitarists 😂 there's no point shilling out extra money to impress people who don't make 5% of the crowd!
Excellent point on the “if it was just as easy to eq different amp sounds, why would anyone ever need a different amp?” Spot on sir,
I love the moving the mic demonstration on the amp and how mic position affects tone. When I took an audio engineering class in college my teacher told me that the edge of the speaker is better for low end and the center is better for treble, and ever since then I've used 2 mics on my shitty little Line6 Spider to get a mix of the lows and highs and the results are pretty damn good considering what I'm working with. Highly recommend trying it out. And make sure that you have headphones on when you're dialing in your tone because what the mic is hearing is ultimately what really matters.
Because of you, I've been able to DRASTICALLY improve the quality of my recordings without spending a single penny.
funny story here. several years ago I was starting to get into amp heads. I had dumped my line6 combo and needed a cab. nothing fancy, just something to play at home, jam with friends, and maybe record a little. at the time the joyo zombie amp head was perfect. price was great, nice size, all the sound demos were good, etc. I thought a cab is a cab is a cab. so I drove down to a LA guitar center. they had a few used and new cabs. I was able to actually bring the amp since it's small. i grabbed the cheaper used cab and it was ok. i'm thinking fine. well, for kicks I decided to plug into a few different cabs and holy crap, what a difference. remember, I knew like nothing about cabs and speakers and all that. just the same guitar, same amp, and worlds of difference. I ended up spending twice as much as I had planned on an orange 1x12 because yes, the sound was that much better. I still know very little, but you are 110% correct that the speaker makes a world of difference. no, it's not scientific and no, I don't have the tests obviously. but yes, the amp sounded totally different in different cabs. as I've watched alot of your videos, I am thinking of changing the speaker. it has a vintage 30 in it. any suggestions for the best 1x12 speaker. there's alot of us probably in this position. thanks.
long time lurker here. I love the new kinder, gentler Glenn!!!! The world has way too many people screaming at each other.
My 6 year old enjoyed your thumbnail, he said "that looks funny"
Hehehehehe ❤
I think it's so funny that Glenn is essentially being a consumer advocate for all of us and people are mad at him for daring that we save money by buying one tube amp rather than five.
I don't think you have to worry about dogfighting when you're chasing after people from a horse hollerin' 'Stop, eh!"
Informative and entertaining. Great job. Keep it up. Can't wait to see what's next.
Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for video man cheers love your work
Nuno's recent chat with Rick Beato was very interesting. Basically, he says the mics and their positions are a vital ingredient in his tone/sound. He doesn't have his amp that loud on stage because he wants to hear what FOH is getting through his monitors.
I have never subscribed to any content page and I've been watching your videos for quite a while now. You put out fantastic content and you have saved me a few thousand bucks already. Thanks glenn!
First ten seconds was really uncalled for...
Do it again!
I sold my Line6 POD 2.0 quite a while ago. Since I've discovered IRs on your channel in 2018 (Thank you so much!), I've always wondered how the POD amps would sound with modern IRs.
GREAT VID as usual. Glen... you're giving us all truly genuine and conclusive results. Don't change a thing Bro you are awesome!
Glenn, I am celebrating my 66th year on the planet in June and have been playing guitar since the age of 13. I am not a metal head but a classic rock player. Even with that said, I still like to learn new things about the craft of playing and recording. Good information is not genre exclusive. Your recording advice is great and you're low tolerance of music dodos is refreshing. So players...stfu and listen. Love your videos and in a recent CZcams survey I listed YOU as one of my sites for useful info on gear and recording techniques. Keep slaying the doubters. 🤘😎
The EQ cured me of a lot of gear acquisition syndrome with regards to the drive pedals. If all the difference between a boutique OD and a mass produced version of the same circuit is that the vintage is little bit less bright, then I can achieve that with a tiny tweak to the EQ and I don't see a reason to spend 2 times the money on the boutique version. (of course sometimes boutique pedals are much more cool, but that's a different story)
Speaking of boutique pedals, I recently got Earthquaker Devices Blumes (with a B, and yes, I know some will oppose calling EQD boutique) and it's a super versatile bass distortion that can easily do great hard rock and punk distorted bass tones. Maybe you could give it a spin to see how well it works in the metal context?
I love your exposure of the bullshit in this community. The longer I live, the more evidence I see that this kind of bullshit is EVERYWHERE! I remember a few old videos I saw years ago that opened my eyes. In one video, someone snuck some cheap wine into a fancy wine tasting exhibition and none of the "experts" noticed the cheap wine by taste. They just assumed they were different fancy expensive wines. And then my FAVORITE video was when someone went out and bought a bunch of McChickens (the cheapest little chicken sandwiches from McDonald's), cut them into little fancy squares, and put toothpicks in them. They they went to a super high class fancy pantsy cuisine event and served the squares on a silver platter. Everyone who tried one was very impressed and had lots of verbage to express about the exquisite flavor and texture. Nobody knew they were eating a fucking $1 sandwich. From that day forward, I knew that 99% of humanity was full of shit. Thank you for blowing this industry wide open Glenn!
This channel makes me laugh and i learn a lot. couldn't ask for more. Fucking cheers!!!
saved me 1000s now any time i want a new sound i just change speakers -the message is gettin thru to some
I honestly didn't really get how much a speaker can change the overall tone...until I did my own test. I have 2 cabs, both ENGL. One is a 4x12 with Greenbacks. The other is a 2x12 with V30's. I used my ENGL Ironball 20 with the EXACT same settings, same guitar and recorded them. I laid the first track with the Greenbacks. Then I recorded the same riff with the other cab with the V30's. The sound was very different. This also made me realize that when I use these cabs live, I need to decide what "tone" do I want to use at this particular gig. Thanks for the info Glenn. A real eye opener!
Got an email from a certain mic placement device (that is not cheap) that featured your video as proof that SPEAKERS make the difference!
Appreciate your work! Keep it up!
Hahah awesome. When the cruise montage played I remember you were a DOP. Nice man!
Thank you for your time Glenn learn so much through your knowledge really thank you Glenn
I have learned so much from your videos, thanks Glenn. Was thinking on changing one of my HH cabinets to creambacks. Any mix these two drivers before?
Glenn!! I’ve been absolutely loving your videos for the past few years since I found your channel. As someone who has never had a huge budget for “professional level” gear it was mind blowing to find an industry pro who is willing to demonstrate that you don’t need a $10k guitar rig to sound good!!!
Thank you for the quality videos and content and keep on proving the gear snobs wrong!!!
As a Bass player I’m confused by the title of this video, Your full of shot Glenn ??????
Dude, as a bass player you could have ended your sentence at "confused" and the sentence would still be factual. 😁😉
As a bass player, I thought the title was really on point, as Glenn is full of shut the fuck up directed to bullshit... I tried substituting other vocals, but the English language does not work with y, ä and ö
As a fellow bass player, I can guarantee it’s “shut” 😂
Thanks for straightening me out. I thought he was full of buckshot.
Since you mentioned a Soldano: my SLO Synergy module sounds very similar to my Orange Rocker 15 Terror - at least to my ears in the room, didn't record it. I think it would be very interesting to see, if the same is true for the "real" Soldano.
I've compared them by using the foot switch on the Synergy preamp, while playing. So my playing might have skewed my perception as well. The power amp was the one in the Orange in both cases. No matter the cab (I've tried with a single V30, a single Creamback, a dual Alnico Blue and a dual Greenback cabs. In all cases the SLO sounded very similar to the Orange in the room. Also the Synergy preamp is not broken. I did the same tests with the OS, and the Friedman BE/BB module, and these did sound significantly different to the Orange. Also I've tried the same with a VOX AC30 (yes, the one with the Alnico Blue Speakers, I use as a cab as well) instead off the Orange, which did sound significantly different to the SLO. Therefore preamp and module are obviously fine.
You might also note, that my experiments were not about metal sounds, like Glens, but more with classic rock sounds. I've just dialed in a sound on every preamp I liked at the moment, not intentionally trying to make them sound similar, or particularly different, just pleasant and to my taste. Actually my intention was, to familiarize myself with the differences of these amps.
Though I'm happy with Mike Soldano earning his money, if any of the viewers can't afford one, you'll get pretty close with these relatively cheap Orange Terrors. At least for classic Rock sounds, and probably also for Metal I guess, though I haven't checked that. Save your money for a reasonable cab, with great speakers. Or, if you prefer a "silent stage", for something, like e.g. a TwoNotes Capture X, or an UA OX-box.
Glenn, I am very thankfull for your videos. You actually prevented me buying unnecessary stuff. I bought the Orange Supercrush instead of the Rockerverb and love the sound. I totally agree with you regarding the massive influence of the speaker. Especially when you are using things like the Quad Cortex you will notice really quickly the huge differences with different IRs.
So again, thank you for you awesome videos!
Enjoyed The Show. Cant wait for some mixing on the Neve
Your channel has been the ultimate source of taking professional advice and then mixing it with one's own experience to create something original. Youve been an invaluable source of information and thank you!
I’ll definitely watch your vids before buying a piece of gear. Appreciate the No BS take on everything from gear, recording and the music industry in general.
Once again, a great episode Glenn!

The Speaker EQ Frequency Response Charts bring a welcome dose of objectivity into the highly subjective world of audio experiences. Love 'em!
Glen youre just freaking awesome bro!
Glenn has not only cured my guitar tones and drum mixes, but also my insomnia. Knowing I’m in his intro I can sleep at night now.
On the flip side, the number of times I've had crappy sounding guitars through good gear from bad mic placement alone also proves Glenn's point 🙃
Love ur videos 😄
I’m a basement recording guy, and when I was recording my friend’s band recently we used their individual amps. An Engl Powerball for one guitarist and a Splawn Quickrod for the other guitarist. Both of them went through at Fryette PS-2 loadbox and the same IR. The Engl had no overdrive in front, and the Splawn had an SD-1. Aside from one signal having more bass and more gain than the other, they really weren’t so different in sound. I think it was cool that we used their individual amps, because they got the feel they’re used to at practice while recording. However, sound wise it probably wasn’t necessary at all. It was an eye opener for me. What you say about amps not mattering as much as people think rings true good sir!
That's incredibly interesting and wouldn't have guessed that at all. Would have thought you'd basically get a JCM800 vs boosted Recto with those two amps.
@@ookookook Engl on the left. Splawn on the right.
Dude is so calm and polite to us here compared to other videos that it is freaking me out. Hold me Glenn.
Glen! weekly reminder we want to see your review of the Westcreek guitars. 🤘
Love your stuff, Glenn. To answer the number of amps question, ask Ola. (I am subscribed 🤣)
About the sound. I have a B52 solid state 100w thru a Randall 4x12 with Jaguars and it is the heaviest cabinet in weight and sound, I've ever heard. Bought it from my best friend in 90 or 91 and it makes whatever goes thru it sound amazing. From a low buck BC Rich Mockingbird NJ, to a Dean Stealth, and now an LTD JH600EC
One word. Twonotes!
All the cabs!!! Figure out your favorite and then get it.
My pod hd500x allows me to turn off the cab sim. I bet you can pick one up cheap used Glenn.
I went from Yikes and Meh guitar recordings to "FN A+" guitar recordings, once I got the Two Notes Cab M in 2019. Added Captor 8 for Load Box silent recording in 2020.
I knew about Two Notes for a lot longer, but their gear was Pro and expensive / beyond my budget, until the affordable products they've released since Captor, Cab M and Opus.
@@JohnnyMegabyteCanada genome makes it affordable AF to get awesome tones too!
@PooNinja I have a license for genome, tried and liked very much. I substituted guitars and bass raw tracks from a 10 year old project to experiment with genome. Then played some guitar and created some patches.
I will definitely use it in my next recording project.

hey glenn, thanks for all the hard work you've done to pull back the curtain on where your tone actually comes from. anyone blasting you in the comments are just embarrassed about the insane amounts of money they've spent on their setup. nothing wrong with getting shiny equipment but if you're trying to gatekeep tone behind an insane paywall then you've got way more serious problems than just buying overpriced amps. keep it up man!
I love the way you eliminate the BS it helps me pick gear worth owning thanks so much for doing the work for me.
Man this V in the wall is so cool! Cool man I'll definitely check Geddy Lee book! This console is so beautiful and shinny too! I don't get all those lights on my focusrite solo.
It’s a prettier color though.
I bought a Mesa mark V because of the mark lead circuit. At the same time I wanted to be able to do more Recto stuff. After I realized I'm able to twist the knobs in the extreme mode and get the Recto metal shit out of the Boogie as well, I knew this is the only amp I need. And IF there would be any need for different character, still got my Helix with tons of preamps/amps and can bypass the preamp on the Boogie, giving me tens of expensive amps for much less money. Not even talking about amp sims... And btw the Helix I got for life gigs and am doing all stuff in there, it's nice Swiss army knife for recording with 4 cable method as well. Conclusion? Get the one head which serves you best with the options. Everything else can be dirt cheap. And yeah, don't forget to get decent speakers, they will set your tone character!
I want to go on the cruise so bad. Sounds awesome
many don't realize a simple fact...we spend our lives searching for that perfect tone while standing in a room with no other instruments...what you hear in the room is not what the microphone (close-micced) hears...your tone will have to be altered to fit in the mix with the other instruments
After watching all kinds of speaker videos from Glenn, I am seriously thinking to buy speaker company stocks 😂
I'm always dieing at the reading voice hahahaha
Mojotone nailed it with their BV25M speakers, everything you love about the Greenbacks and more !!
Comedy, guitars, critical thinking? What's not to like? Found this channel only recently and oh man I have a lot to watch. Keep it up!
Glen, Can you do an open back closed back comparison. Thanks awesome stuff here.
Line 6 Spider iv does not have an impulse response. The combo amps don't have a separate cabinet output but you can disconnect the internal speaker to power a cab with the same wires. I put a bypass jack on mine. Line 6 Spider Valve MKii is the same software and front end but has a tube power section. The Spider Valve combo amps come with vintage 30s.
Both amps can be updated (through no east task) to have more/better tones and effects.
Hope that helps.
Greetings Glen, love the angle your YT channel gives and your personal perspective. Nice to know you shower also. In my experience many amps often sound different but, the speakers are the ultimate difference maker ... IMHO. Just picked up a 6505+ for 300 bucks and was surprised to find a Marshall Gold back in it ... Score! Thinking about dropping a 90w cream back in it but the Marshall sounds pretty good after initial plug in and play. What are your thoughts about the Gold back? nd thanks for shooting down the 'Tonewood' argument, been telling fellow musicians that is all bullshit and you justified it scientifically ... Thank you for that!
Another great SMG show.
good point Gleenn,! all depedends of eq......and a part of it, is wehere you put your mivcreophones and witch one's you use, the transient/speaker is the final varibel to consider.... then lear to use your eyears...

Keep up the good work. I see your immense value to people. As i have a curious interest that keeps going, as you do.
Learning alot through you.
Love this stuff 💙
When I’m looking for a new amp or guitar I’m not looking for “subtle nuances.” If I’m going to spend a fuck ton of money on something I want a fuck ton of nuance. Keep up the great work, Glenn!
I bought a used 6505+ for like 500 bucks a few years ago. I wouldn't exactly call that a "fuck ton" of money, particularly since he's running a studio, and that amp is like a staple of modern metal. I think it's worth having one kicking around, if only for the simple purpose of keeping your options open.
@@reynolds087 Yeah. I also have a 6505. I’m talking about the money people drop on things like an SLO 100.
Hi Glenn,
get an old Line 6 Pod RACK and poweramp.
I use to run. that with a Marshall 4X12 with greenback and Creamback. worked fine for live work .
Love your show. Just found it a few weeks ago and this old player has a had a few opinions changed; thank you. Way back when the 5150 first came out I purchased the first one that arrived at “Daddy’s Junky Music” in Hartford Ct. I still have it today and its still one hell of a amp and it must have at least 100’s of shows under its belt. Although I have always wanted a Dual Rectro and your comparison has changed my mind. You also changed my opinion about speakers, I love greenbacks. It would be cool if you did a comparison between similar speakers but different brands. I fall into that old guy Fender/Gibson brand traditionalist for guitars; but slowly going elsewhere like G&L, and old school RG550’s from the early 90’s. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for your vids. I am a Scientist that took up the guitar last year, and so many times in looking for gear I would hear all these very subjective terms to describe tone, so much so I felt tone was a code word for bullshit. Then I found Jim Lill vid on pickups and tone woods and felt I was finally seeing critical analysis of actual functionality. Yours are even better because of the peak data. Shocking how people question actual data over subjective indicators like "feel".
Gain is Gain is Gain. At saturation, most high gain amps sound the same. The one thing that separates them all is the shape of the tone stack. Marshalls sound different from Fenders because of the components. Orange Amps have a very distinct sound and type of distortion, but you can make a Rectifier sound very similar with a little work. In the end, once you push the gain to a heavily compressed and saturated state, it is hard to tell them apart. Good vid Glenn. Cheers from Texas!
Really enjoyed the mesa/5150 video, would really interesting to see a comparison of mics that are similar designs.
There are so many SM57, Royer 121 and U87 clones, and each has varying amounts of letting people know it’s a clone, would be great to see the differences
It's good to know that your moose numbers are up. Thanks for the update.

First time commenting. What you say is logical and makes sense. Not trying to defend guitar players, but I am one, and there are some hurdles we have to overcome in order to have a truly open mind, and really understand what is being said here. Guitar players love the Cosplay...what we SEE behind us matters....We hear with our eyes to a point, and that is a disservice to us when evaluating recorded sound. We also judge the amp by its 'in the room" sound....when what you are dealing with is the recorded sound.....Big difference that guitarists need to understand. Many of those big differences between amps disappear when put through the extra steps and filters of recording....and even live sound.
I can see that it is difficult to speak harsh truth when some have emotions involved. We guitar players some or most?) LOVE our gear, and can get an emotional attachment to it....another hurdle. LOL, keep doing what you do. It is a good fight when done for the truth...even if a bit abbraisive (which I enjoy as it is entertaining). \m/
Question: Can you use a regular patch bay for connecting Amps and speaker Cabinets?
If yes ... can you use other channels on the same patch bay for switching your guitar signal and FX Loops cables .... at the same time?
I love these comment videos! After watching, I am always tempted to make an inflammatory comment in hopes of winning a spot on butthurt of the week.
Glenn, please make a video with Puff Daddy asap.
Dudes this is the perfect guitar content to watch when u dont quite have the urge to pick one up yet.
Glen you mentioned X pattern in the cab. I’d love to see a test to see how much the neighboring speaker matters in final mic’d tone if at all (being close mic’d and all)
I’ll try to add that to the list!
Most of people are paying attention and learning. Thanks for the videos, I got some courage and buy some aliexpress valves for my DSL 15 and guess what not a difference. Well I notice a little more high but EQ solve it. From an inferior ear fan, keep on showering.
Warehouses ET65 is nice.
I have the veteran 30 as well. Both are in my Gibson GA42rvt. Not a high gain amp just an all around pedal platform. I prefer the ET65.
Love what you do friend thanks!!!
I did it, Glenn, I finally hit the subscribe button. You can stop yelling at me now.

Did you see Gibson's video about the new shop they've opened on London? For those of you who don't live here, it's in one of the most expensive parts of London.
Soooo forget making guitars that stay in tune or rhst have a headstock that doesn't snap off If you look at it twice In the same day. Let's get a lease on a massive high street shop! Surrounded by major fashion brands and jewellery shops.
Gibson is finally admitting it's only a luxury brand now.

You really make good points regarding gear. I applied what you have shown here by putting 2 EVH green backs to my cabinet, and the result was amazing, I'm not a fan of buying gear I'm mostly fan of playing so I always try to find stuff that works. and yes, you are helping. Thanks Glenn and also Fuck you Glenn!
The review on the Lewitt 640REX was a great one. Had found out that if you move the right switch to += that the bottom end around 60/70Hz is fattened up a bit on the dynamic and both capsules are about the same gain. (On this setting).
10:23 - You my friend, are looking for the Line 6 HD147. The Chrome Toaster. It has a really cool hidden feature where it applies a partial/very mild IR to the output (and you can then presumably emulate the sound of different cabs when paired with the original Line 6 cab... I guess?), but you can also set it to bypass. All the best Pod 2/XT sounds in one amp. Also, it just sounds FUN :)
Hey Glenn, Can you please do some episodes featuring some budget alternative microphones for Vocals, Guitar, Drums and anything else you think would be relevant to your channel? I specifically am looking for a usable alternative ribbon mic for the Royer 121. Love Your Channel!
love the shirt.
I keep a second amp as a back up, and a combo for convenience. That’s about it nowadays I used to have a arsenal of different tube and solid state amps. But I do like to switch cabs up for different tones.
After finding your channel I got more into speakers. This is something I had never even thought about until watching some of your videos. Swapping them around got annoying so I had an oversized 412 built with each speaker having it's own input. Pair that with a KHE amp switcher and run all of your amps through 4 different speakers to really find what you like! Blending has been fun too. The only thing I have to be mindful of is wattage. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge!
Have you ever tried the OC18 mic by Austrian Audio ? I mic cabinets with a 57 and 421 mixed together but I am looking at trying this mic.
when micing up an amp, does it make any difference if its a 1x12 cab of 4x12 cab?
how does the cab having open back affect the sound in the recording? What on the cab does affect the sound except the speaker?
I kinda wonder if mic position mores than the speaker.
I’ve been blending ML sound labs Mega Greenback and Oversized cabs using the infamous 57 and I tried paring it with a 421 and it fucking rules in a mix.
Thanks Glen!
A cheap alternative for a reamp box can be a good passive DI. You just put the signal through backwards using an xlr sex-changer for example. Steve Albini's electrical audio has a video on this. Plus you're killing two birds with one stone by having a DI and a reamp box in one.
Dear Uncle Glenn, following your advice and primarily because I wanted to see for myself what the big deal is with all - tube amps, I got myself a 6505+ combo and never regretted it.
Much to my horror I realized that the local store manager of the second biggest music retailer (imagine Guitar Centre but much, much smaller) simply could not comprehend the difference between instrument cables and amp-to-cab cables (aka speaker cables) because a) they look the same and b) when he used instrument cable in place of speaker cable, nothing bad happened -according to him. So he was trying to convince me that a good instrument cable would be suitable to connect the 6505+ to a load box. I also realized that a good friend of mine and seasoned guitar player also didn’t have a clue about the subject.
So, could you please, please consider making a not very fun but very informative video about TR, TRS, XLR, speaker and instrument and balanced and unbalanced cables? I had to take a crash course through all these to make sure I won’t fry my 6505+ combo when connecting it to load box and my Katana head with the cab. To be fair, not too many amp heads are sold these days for obvious reasons so this ignorance can be justified to some extent BUT NOT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT IT’S THEIR JOB to know better. I’ve been following the channel for 8 years now, I’m grateful for the free, unbiased advice (and the Element Bass I got a month ago plus freebies you give from time to time!). All the best from Greece.
These guys shitting on your tests and results remind me of a dear friend yelling at me when I told him I saw his girlfriend cheating.
Hey Glen, I'd love to have a signal chain video for drums. What is the thing that matters the most? Heads? Shell material? Hoops? Greets from Berlin
I second Glenn's recommendation of Geddy Lee's book. My wife and I listened to the audiobook on a recent road trip from southwestern Pennsylvania to Knoxville, TN and back. The book is great.
At one point in the book Geddy talked about the "loudness wars" and I thought of Glenn and his observations that some remastered albums don't sound as good as the originals. Glenn, do you think that these remasters may have been victims of the "loudness wars"?
Every High GainAMp is based on a Fender Bassman, Marshall was the first to clone and mod it... the Mesa just sounded slightly darker than the 5150 to me. I could tell there was a slight tonal shift, but nothing you couldn't dial in with an EQ in the loop!
I guess you need to do a video on speaker construction, why is it (usually) a cone with a half sphere, in the middle and how this radically effects the tone a mic picks up as you move it across the face of said speaker. That might help the hard of thinking understand.
