Back in the 70's we used to use multipin ceramic connectors for high current plug/sockets. Perhaps that would solve the problem of melting plastic sockets. Another lesson in how to solder! Thanks Alex and have a Happy Holiday/Christmas.

melted plugs due to weak psu. low voltage makes heat.
Well...recently cablemod admitted their adapters/cables were the cause of melted connectors,and recalled their products for this card,also,many people didn't have any problems when not using cablemod .
But it's really the fault of the customers who decide to spend 2,000 dollars on a product from a company that doesn't give a damn about them!
It is the fault of the Customer for using a cheap ass 90 or 180 adaptor.

One of the coolest channels with a cool guy who go out of their way to explain what most brush off as "self explanatory". Give me a few more months of watching I'll be ready to try repairs. Is there a little cheap board and components set I can buy to learn on. Like a simple led board like Der Bauer has?

I drove it this past 3 or 4 months ago on a one week little road trip from Oklahoma to Kansas and then Colorado Springs for a whole week to go see my brother and his family in the U.S. Army base, and boy I tell you that car is going to save so much money for Big Boss on gas because for me I pumped only 1 time going to Colorado Springs from Kansas and then Oklahoma. Theres so much I want to say but well just ask Big Boss to let you check out the features and drive it together with the family hahhaa I dont want to spoil it for you.

Excellent repair as always Alex. Man, some connector manufacturer needs to come up with a tandem connector for these or something. The pins being separated out and distributed may help with this. It's not ideal, but should be much better since the solder connections are never an issue just the pins. With the double or tandem connector a 'y' cable will also be needed and may end up being the easy to replace part? Nice wheels Big Boss! Hope you enjoy it!

You said it when it comes to kids. My boys are 21 & 22 and still at home. They are really good young men and work hard, save and don't get into problems. They are welcome in my house until they are ready. I will dearly miss them when they are ready to move out.

Those joints are infinitely better than anything you'll get out of the factory
If these connectors and the "new" type model are still melting, a whole newly designed one is needed. This type just can't handle the temps and watts/current. The human factor should be taken into consideration with connectors designed more robustly for installations that can withstand error.

This Northman handles it easly.
The 40 series wiring is too small, it can't handle the amount of current that flows through it. From now on everything has to be built around the 40 series and up.

Pardon my ignorance, but why don't the owners of these video cards leave the products to the warranty service for repair? Does the warranty process work differently in the US?
Most companies are not honoring warranty especially when physical damage or cracking is involved. One customer said his warranty was refused because he did not ship card in original box.
In EU it is little bit different: if they refuse a warranty about this, they will be sent to “customer rights commission” then… only bad things for them 😂
@@NorthridgeFix Thank you for explaining, if it were here, the consumer court would have decided that the fracture/damage was due to a manufacturing defect and ordered a refund. Asking for the original box is also a rare case here, most of the time you can get rid of such stupid requests by saying that if this was a washing machine, would you ask for the box 😀

Wise words about family. And good work. I find adding 10% acetone to my 99% IPA really helps get the Amtech Flux residue off. MG Chemicals and other companies follow that basic recipe in their commercial flux removers.
just be careful with acetone it's very strong and will eat right through plastic
I have a 4090 and every time I turn it on I’m convinced it’s going to melt, and I’ve check many times it’s plugged in completely and straight in/flush.
Clearly this is a case of too much current with too small terminal contact area. I’m retired automotive master technician and saw the same thing in many connector designs. I wonder if just soldering the wires directly to the board would fix it. Yes it would not be the ideal fix, but I bet it’d work just fine.

@northridgefix Asus just came with a btf 4090 that allow the gpu to pull power directly through the motherboard with a secondary pci power slot.
Seems a good idea to solve the 12vhpwr cable for good.
But i was wondering, pulling 600w for gpu + 300 w for core i9. Isn't it to much to handle for a motherboard ? What about the durability, the electro noise for audio parts etc ...
Are the new connectors of a better quality than the original ones?

the other side of the connector that is on the customer PC/power-supply might by melted / broken as well.... This should be addressed as well.

I see there are recalls by one manufacturer on the right angle connectors for 4090s so that maybe why so many are showing damage.

What heat degree do you use to cure the solder mask?

I have not been able to source an Asus TUF 4090 for like two months now. I notice there is no stock of other 4090s for the same amount of time....I wonder if Nvidia is working on a revision to fix the melting power connector issue...
Not sure what people are doing, I have the same card and my connector has had no issues and it's been in out of the case multiple times. There be must something wrong with the OEM connectors. I used a 3rd party cable that connects directly to my PSU and it's worked perfectly.
Among all PC brands i still trust MSI the most, the melted connectors are a general issue sadly no company can do anything with it, however i still own my trusty RX580 i'm not a huge fan of buying newly expensive GPUs cause i don't do alot of gaming

How does this procedure actually fix the problem? I would think the replacement connector will eventually have the same failure as the factory one.
It fixes the problem, it doesn't fix the design issue causing the problem ... Unless you fancy producing a redesigned connector/pcb layout there isn't much more a repair tech can do.
make sure you psu is up to the task of running a big card with big fans
