After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im showing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. As a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic I hope that I can help you. If people don't need to know why you're a wheelchair user, then don't feel obliged to tell them - just ask them: "Do you ask black people where they're from?". Both questions are similarly irrelevant in relation to their acceptance of you as a person - or they SHOULD be. Being a Disability advocate has no bearing on that.
As for catheters, I hope my internal injury is sorted now I'm out of hospital for the THIRD time this month. 🤦If they'd changed it when I went in the first time, I might have been saved the subsequent admissions. It was wrongly situated.

@@morgancalvi6675 I don't have to think about it at all. Private business is private - end of story. If someone cannot accept you on your terms, then that is not your problem. We aren't public property simply because we're Disabled. It's rather entitled to think you are owed an explanation from a stranger. For example, if you became Disabled in traumatic circumstances, you would not want to relive it for someone's entertainment. It's off-limits.

It always blows my mind that strangers will flat out ask why you are in a wheelchair. When I see someone in a wheelchair, I know they are in it because they need it and any more detail is none of my business. Besides, for all I know, the answer to that question could be quite traumatizing to that person.

I recently moved to a new assisted living facility and I have found this to be quite an issue since I got here. Just today I had my neighbor ask me and like a really forceful way. I kept giving my sort of half answers like I do but get scared and I feel like a ton of pressure when this happens and I get to a point where I will just say anything to like not be having that conversation anymore.
I really do wish that more people felt like this because I don't see why it is in any way a socially acceptable question to ask it's just really invasive and I can't tell you how many times I've gone home in tears over it. And not gone out over it and honestly not wanting to exist over it because I feel like everyone just used me is completely useless for nothing else but then answering their deep Curiosities.

Disney is great apart from the fact that they refuse to install Changing Places toilets. So many people have approached them to ask but the just refuse.
If you can’t transfer onto rides or can’t walk at all then most rides in parks are out, I’ve been to a few and wasn’t able to go on any “adult” rides at all but had to pay the same price.
I can’t remember most of my dreams but when I do I’m never in my chair.I’m considering getting an assistance dog but a lot of the charities are not taking referrals or have a long waiting list.

when someone asks me why you are in a wheelchair I say asked someone in in a wheelchair a stupid question .
I usually only get the "Why are you in a wheelchair?" question from children. I just tell them that "my legs don't work, so I use my chair the way you use your legs." They always seem to accept that answer. I LOVE THE ROLLETTES!!!!! I haven't been able to go to their conference experience, but I want to so bad!
Imposter syndrome is really common with people in regards to service animals.
You can always imagine how much worse it could be for someone else and think you are not at the level to need it yet.
Once you actually have one you realize that independence actually is valuable, even if a human can help it feels better to be independent with a dog.
Dogs can do so many amazing thinks: helping stabilize during a transfer, getting up from the floor,
pulling your chair to help you up steep inclines,
pushing your feet back on your footplate,
helping tug off your socks or jacket, picking up anything you drop,
getting items off shelves that are hard to reach,
finding a person and bringing them to you in the house if you need help, bringing your wheelchair closer if it is out of reach,
paying a cashier if the till is too high,
helping get clothes and put them in a basket,
pulling clothes out of the dryer or washer and handing them to you,
carrying a small bag inside from the car, or up/down the stairs inside the house, opening/closing doors,
turning on and off lights,
pushing door buttons,
bringing you a blanket, meds, or water from the fridge.
So many more things as well. I just wanted to share these with you and anyone else who is considering it to know that service animals can do so much more than people initially think
i agree but i personally have known folks whos dog clearly was not a service dog, the dogs temperament, behavior and reactions clearly indicated the dog was not capable of even qualifying as a legit service dog and what sucks is because of how people feel they nee to walk on eggshells, and not ''offend'' anyone, people like this get to get away with the bs while folks with legit service dogs get scrutinized
I'm hypermobile as well and share most of your sleeping positions, except I use 5 to 7 pillows to prop my body up to reduce pain. It's a really fascinating to me that we sleep similarly, but are diametrically opposed when it comes to pillows
I feel you on all the pillows lol. I have to prop up everything in a crazy way to reduce my pain at night
I'm in the process of applying for a service dog. I've put years of thought into it and I've thought a lot about the "disabled enough" feeling. What I've come to realize is that just because there are people who might be more disabled than I am, that doesn't mean that a service dog wouldn't still make a difference in my life. Also, I've realized that if a program that trains service dogs accepts me, then I'm not taking a dog from someone who needs it because the program has decided that I need one.
If you're not familiar, Molly Burke might be a good person to watch if you're interested in some of the day-to-day experience of having a service dog. The experiences wouldn't necessarily be identical (she's blind so she has a guide dog, assuming that's not your situation since you said service dog and not guide dog). I hope you're able to get the assistance that would help you!
This doesn't relate a lot to the video but once my family and I were in Legoland Denmark and my brother hat twisted his ankle and couldn't walk very well. They let him borrow a wheelchair and actually it ended up being a good experience for him instead of being in really bad pain and not beinga able to do a lot of the fun stuff. We were at one of the rides and came in through the accessible entrance and just asked if my brother could stay there while we were in the line because it was a 30 minutes plus wait. We were told if we could go two and two then we could just go for the next to turns in the back. They were really nice people there is the long story short.
LOL at the Shark attack comment! I was in a boat accident (tubing, so almost skiing) at 13, and though I'm not in a wheelchair (except occasionally), I do have nasty scars, a limp, and often use walking aids. I most definitely have told people "shark attack"! But I always follow it up with a "just kidding, boat propellor!" Then I get to watch their horrified reactions twice. You gotta have fun where you can, right?
Please do not let others being “worse” than you from discouraging you from getting an assistance dog. Your experience is your experience. And having a dog trained for you will not take a dog from someone else.
Amanda Snyder you’re right. Lots of dogs can be born, and lots of dogs can be trained. I don’t think we are really having a shortage on dogs.
What makes me angry is when I'm out and use the handicap parking spot or the bathroom stall, and people see I'm in a wheelchair but confront me anyhow. One time I was out with my mom and this older lady started screaming at her for parking in the handicap parking. The look on that woman's face when I scooted into the wheelchair was priceless! I was in a bad mood that day anyhow and I unloaded on her. I told her it was people like her who made going out miserable for people like me. Then I told her to take it up with me and leave my mother alone. The woman walked away crying.
Yes! People see a younger person and get angry and assume but I then get in my wheelchair which makes them very awkward.
I look young and healthy and I can walk but I have to have a wheelchair as I can fall any moment with little warning! I know it must look super confusing when I get up in a quiet area and have a bit of a walk.
Funnily enough, a lot of the time if people ask me why I wear bracing or why I’m in a wheelchair, I give an honest answer that it’s because of issues related to my EDS. I kinda consider it a way to raise a bit of awareness for EDS at the same time as you’re showing how many various reasons there can be for someone to need a wheelchair. Most of the time I’m not more offended by people asking me why I’m in a chair, than if someone was to ask me where I’ve purchased a certain coat or purse or whatever they may have seen that they think looks nice. I guess one reason as to why I’m very open about my condition is because it wasn’t a traumatic event that put me in the chair to begin with, and I also want to put some positive light on the wheelchair so people are less afraid of maybe needing one themselves one day. There’s too much doom and gloom around wheelchairs, but I see mine as a very good friend and key to independence and inclusion
I have EDS and use an electric wheelchair, especially when outside but I've been told it's likely I will need it full time. If people ask in a nice way I will say about EDS and explain but if I'm not very well I just say I have a genetic condition. It depends but I try and explain. I've found some drs can actually be more rude of why I use a wheelchair, like your a Dr!? It's frustrating
@@ruby_roulette_Wheeling_Autism Yeah, I either say EDS with an explanation of what it is, or just “genetic disorder” really depends on if I have time and energy for strangers at the time. I use my wheelchair outside of home most of the time, though I do at times walk with my chair and use my chair to carry grocery bags home from the car (if I’m feeling ok to walk that distance at the time) and I may walk into the pharmacy from the handicap parking (I have a badge) or walk into a cafe where the car is just outside etc. to me that little bit of walking that I do manage, has helped me keep my bone strength and muscles even after 10 years of being a wheelchair user now in March. I’m hoping I get to keep this level of walking ability or can regain a bit more walking ability because it’s very convenient to have as sadly not everywhere is accessible in a wheelchair
I am so glad you answered the question about dreams. I have no diasabled friends & some therapist when I started doing physical said that it was because I wasn't accepting my situation. I was 32 when I finally needed a wheelchair and knew it was a good possibility since I had my 1st spina bifida surgery at 11. It's now been 20 years and I still don't dream that I'm disabled, so good to know they had zero idea what they were talking about. PS..my go to answer is trapeze accident ;)
I have Spina Bifida and have never dreamed I am not Disabled. I can't even imagine what it would be like. I am in my 50s. I had my first surgery the day I was born. You must have a mild form.
When I dream I usually don’t pay much attention to how I am getting around. Sometimes it feels like I don’t even have a body in my dreams. I’m sometimes just observing the dream. It’s usually never a focus of the dream. Unless I am dreaming back to the time when I had Kafos (long leg braces) and I am in school trying to get to my classes. I think I have some trauma from being in kafos at school, even though my dream takes place in jr. high and I stopped wearing braces to school in 5th grade. In those dreams I am definitely aware of how I am getting around. (I have Spina Bifida, too)
My favorite US park is probably Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. They bend over backward to make things accessible and their staff is fantastic. They are actually one of the best rated parks in the US for disabilities in general, especially autism. I feel they're even better than Disney in some ways. The only thing I don't like there as a wheelchair user is that the park is quite hilly. It's sets in the Smokey Mountains and the grounds are gorgeous (in a forest), but you have to wheel quite a lot. The hills are gradual, however, and manageable. You just get a bit of a workout! Great park I highly recommend
We have an accessible park in San Antonio called Morgan’s wonderland. It is specifically for handicapped people but everyone can enjoy it.
We pretend that Mary poppins returns was never made . When my daughter was little she loved the original Mary poppins that she would want it on every day after nursery. She still loves it as a teen.

I hear there is a titanic museum in Tennessee, curios to know.
@@qwertya109 Yes it is about 30 minutes from Dollywood. There is so much to do there and if you like nature you'll love the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The Titanic museum, and many of the attractions are also accessible. Some of the trails are too!
You sleep just like I do! I'm hypermobile too... and I also have circulation issues so I try not to sleep in odd positions but sometimes you cant help it and I end up with a white dead arm I have to slap around to wake up.lol
I am super hypermobile too and this happens a lot to me too 🙈 iT is not that I am planning iT iT just happens

I agree, the remake of Mary Poppins was disappointing. I might be bias though. I'm rather proud to say I portrayed Mary Poppins in dance before my chair days. It brings back great memories. I just love the original.

@@Wheelsnoheels My Ocrevus infusion is a month late due to the virus. My doctor wanted my immunity to come back, and it has, it is kicking my butt. I fall a lot, had to get my Primary Doctor to prescribe the wheelchair. My Neurologist, I don't know, I've been with him 7 years, but he just bought a brand new fancy building, and seems to want to do all these other things, like trigger shots, to get more money from the insurance. Yikers.

Don't be embarrassed about watching Robin Hood on VHS. I watched its first run in the theater and used to listed to a vinyl LP of the soundtrack over and over again on a little record player I had in my bedroom.
I dream about running. I love those dreams it feels good. I was never a runner but I did walk a lot. Severe MS and I never mind getting asked.

Loved this video! And I so get you with high heels! I'm not a wheelchair user but I have arthrogryposis and my feet don't bend in this way that they should in heels so I can't really wear them even though I'd love to. I was told I could get a plastic surgery on my feet to make them look better and so that I could wear something different than trainers, but I don't think it's really worth it as there's a possibility I'd have to learn how to walk again
Have you heard of/tried Snowkarting? It’s another form of adaptive skiing that can be used with very limited upper body strength. Unfortunately it cannot be used completely independently and not all ski clubs have them but they are an amazing peace of equipment. I go fortnightly, though I guess having no prior experience of skiing changed my perception of it.

I understand your feelings regarding service/assistance dogs. I am currently training one for myself as a PSD (psychiatric service dog). I think you would more than deserve one, but many people I know have an unofficial service animal at home. They don’t have access rights but can task for you as needed in the home and in dog/pet friendly places. For many it’s like a fun game!

Hello Gem, just watching your video regarding what you can/can't do. I am a female quadriplegic in Canada and I get that question all the time. Annoying! But now I can say I am the first female wheelchair user to reach the summit of Machu Picchu - in 2018! Not without help, of course. Guess all those questions succeeded to spur me on - despite my fear of heights! Love your videos and your positivity!
I got a new toilet through my local council because of my arthritis leaving me unable to wash my privates and at the same time, I asked for a taller one as it helps with my back. So that's just added another reason as to why I like using disabled toilets more often now.
I love Robin Hood! Such a classic film. My brother and I also had it on VHS growing up. My favorite is the Aristocats.
Toilet also higher as it helps people stand up. I've had a few low ones. Some public loos rubbish! lol
I sleep similar with one leg up, feels so good on lower back and hips. lol
I actually got through to next stage for assistance dog just sent off my full application pack. Not easy to get one as there is a special application process and waiting list. You have to keep eye on website (Canine Partners & Dogs for Good). Other companies you need a suitable dog already.

But what wasn't a mistake was the power assistance drive with permanent drive also. this helps me so much with propelling my wheelchair when my arms are getting tired and weak. Thanks for all your honesty! I would love an assistance dog. Or even if we could just train our very smart existing dog to do anything helpful or useful. But sadly I am not a dog trainer of any stripe.

I’ve sit water skied, but I have not sit snow skied. I was asked to go sit snow skiing once, but I couldn’t afford it. If you ever get a chance to sit water ski, you should definitely do it. One of the most fun things I’ve ever done. Also jet skiing is really, really fun. Especially when two wheelchair users are on it and you are driving. It is VERY impowering!! 🦽💪🏽
You should try out some of the cedar fair parks on the us. My local one is called King’s island. Im not in a wheelchair permanently but I have had to use one for some injuries and they are great at helping as best as possible. There are only a few rides that can’t be ridden. I love kings island and would recommend to anyone and everyone
On the topic of wheelchair friendly theme parks, I'm from the Netherlands and here we have a theme park called 'de efteling' which is really good and very wheelchair friendly. It's a fairytale inspired theme park and they just have a separate waiting area for people with disabilities (usually near the exit) and usually you won't have to wait nearly as long (although they do have you wait a little bit, but I actually like it because it makes you feel normal). And it's such a beautiful park as well. Just rolling around in it's a joy. You should try it, you'll love it!
I like her a lot. She's funny and cute and I like that she's honest and not offended.
You can owner train assistance dogs aswell so you don’t have to get it from a company which means you wouldn’t be taking one away from someone who needs it more

I am an assistance dog trainer for Canine Partners. Not all the dogs are suited to live with people who have very high needs, they are dogs at the end of the day. Each dog and application is considered very carefully and not all dogs match every applicant, the matching process is actually quite complex. So please don't feel that you'd be taking away from someone else, it just doesn't work that way 😊
Wow, you are very flexible as a sleeper. I almost sleep in an opposite way from you. I am only comfortable sleeping on my back. I also sleep with a wedge (it’s a pillow that looks like a portable ramp), and 3 pillows. I’m aging after having had a spinal fusion and I also have Arnold chiari malformation so if my back and neck aren’t cushioned properly I am extremely uncomfortable and get headaches. I also don’t move when I sleep, which is probably not great for the body, but I am not able to move when I sleep.
love the video.. as always. i suffer from CRPS in my right leg. triggered by small toe op. Long story short. i went from walking to crutches to wheelchair. Lucky to be able to use left leg to hop or manuer. Fibromialgia is usualy triggered with this. Unfortunatly it did. In all limbs. Reason im giving bit of history is your Q and A to people asking why in wheelchair. My close work " friends", changed over night. I lsst my job as not wheelchair friendly and became too poorly to find another job...... rambling.... back on track..... Their questions to me.. " why dont you have amputation and then you could have prosphetic. Ummm huge thing to consider. Not on my list to do. Risky with CRPS as condition can travel or transfer and your "up the river without a paddle." .... Well... the day did come just as pandemic hit us. I had to meke the choice. Pain and very deep depression. Or fingers crossed and take the leap/hop of faith. I took it. Pain gone withing 2 weeks. Pandemic hit me. Im still here but ...... this is the point of.... Your answer to the question. why am i in a wheelchair, would have been perfect. "I dont really want to talk about it" instead well up and say something weak to get away. Going back to "friends. " As they hadnt seen mw due to lock down, the look on thier faces was a picture. "OMG.".... they would say....." why did you have your leg off"... i did the weak tear thing and just us the.. got to go... soomed away.. Thankfully my mind is alot stronger.. So now i say to these ex friends.. "because you told me too." You would be so proud of me. Id ramain sat their. and they were the ones to well up and shuffle away. Feel good moment. Sorry long msg. Just feels good to share. And thanks for tip on loo. We are just having down stairs loo put in. Had bathroom changed into wet room.... thank you Mr government man..... I have it at a hight OK for me now..... I stand and twizzle round on my rmaining leg to sit. If theres the unfortunate time things goes bad. the toilet would be too low. So im having this one a little higher. to finish. Have you been asked..." do you have a catheter" me "no" Them " oh so you use a nappy then" this isnt even worthy of polite reply. I dont wast another second of my life on them. Turn and wheel away..
Having a rare disease I typically like when people ask, even if it was a total stranger because rare diseases patients tend to already experience a lot of medical neglect and abuse so awareness is incredibly important because awareness usually leads to education, you never know if the person you tell has a friend of a friend of a friend who is a doctor who they may tell or they know someone who has the same thing which could change their opinion of the person for the better like say they thought their friend made excuses about not being able to do something because they were lazy, maybe something I say could make them have the idealization that wow, my friend isn't faking or being lazy, if this person can't do something or does it differently and I can't either than maybe they will realize there's a reason for that that is related to the condition and not that their friend is lazy or making excuses. I'm all about spreading awareness and you never know who you could talk to or who they could tell that has the power to improve the life for someone else with that same condition or a similar one.

Here in Australia the discs vbbled toilets are lower than normal toilets. I also feel naked without my white cane.
If you're ever in the netherlands and want to go to a themepark, I'd recommend the efteling. Most rides are wheelchair accessible as long as you can transfer, but there's even some stuff to do if you can't. It's kinda similar to disney, but with fairytales (and smaller). There is still room for improvement (*ahem* racist stereotypes) but as far as accessibility goes it's pretty decent. Plus it's fun for all ages.

I am incontinent and, since adult changing tables are not a reality in NZ, have to change my pads on the floor and then climb up using the toilet. This puts a lot of strain on my shoulders. High loos are a nightmare for me. I had real trauma at the airport in Queenstown, NZ, last week, I could not face getting on the floor and making that climb, so I tried changing on the toilet (which did not have a cover). The effort almost killed me - pulling up undies over a pad takes a lot of energy. And I ripped the pad in the process. I do wonder how you manage trousers, I am so happy I am a she and can wear a dress - so much easier.
I found Universal Studios in Orlando very good. I haven’t been really in the ones in the UK.

Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard , you probably would still love it. When possible, choose for one of the hotels near the park. I went in my manual wheelchair and while I normally a powerchair use, almost everything was accessible and not too heavy too wheel around.

Higher toilets help people with bad balance, too. Gives me something more to lean legs against when handling pants.

Some people can be so rude. We in the USA don’t have good accessible restroom spaces I personally think the UK has done a good job with some of their accessible things.

I'm not sure why I feel the need to add this, but, from someone who has been a T-11 from birth, sometimes I dream that I can walk; because it just makes the scenarios easier, though, I've never dreamt of an everyday scenario that I'm suddenly able to walk, they've always been far-fetched scenarios in which walking is just easier than trying to justify why I'm in a wheelchair.
Gem, as a part time wheelchair user I find that long sleeves like shirts, jumpers or coats get caught up on either the tires or push rims of the chair. My spine is fixed so I’m not as mobile as others so I get cold in all weathers and I have bad grip so I have rubberised push rims. I’m in Ireland, so the climate is similar here to the UK. I’m also a man. Hence the long sleeves. I don’t really want to have to push around in short sleeves either. Do you have any tips that help prevent this?

Mostly I have been watching Disney movies on Disney plus that Robin Hood was one of the Disney movies I watched quite a bit a lot when I was a child and same with Aladdin that you mention about the Genie. the part where you mention about like to be treated like royalty that you are like a princess that you should be a wheelchair princess.
Perhaps you could train your dog to do some tasks?

As you managed to regain your bladder issues as time incomplete, is it likely that with good physio you could learn to stand with like a frame and splints to help you ?

This is so interesting to me, but we just went to DW before the pandemic and I was surprised at how poorly equipped they were for (some) disabilities.

I guess it depends on what kind of disability you have. I also have a mobility disability, but I’m not on a wheelchair. I can walk some, but I need to take frequent breaks to sit and rest, and I can’t just stand and wait in line. When I went to get my das pass, I explained that to them, I also explained how I was using my kids’ stroller for stability and because I had to push that, I couldn’t rent a wheelchair. I talked to a lot of people before booking the trip, I was reassured they were good about catering towards disabilities, so I thought it would be ok. However, despite it being low season, it was still pretty crowded and there were too few places around to sit down and take a break, and they were always already occupied. I couldn’t rely on the stroller because it had to be dropped off in specific places that were relatively far from the rides. So, I had to walk around without being able to lean on the stroller and while carrying our bags and holding on to my twins and the same time. Even with the das pass, I had to stay in line way too long (yes, it was quicker than for other people, but it was still 20-30 minutes per ride). We tried a couple of rides, but in the end I was in so much pain I was in tears and had to leave.
I’m not blaming them at all. I was just disappointed because I had done my research, I’ve been to a lot of places, I was reassured it was going to be ok, I explained the situation when I got there, and it really didn’t work out for me. The only thing is when I went to get my das pass, I wish they had told me I really couldn’t rely on my stroller at all. It may still not have worked, but I would have tried leaving the stroller in the car, then renting a wheelchair and having my kids either walk next to me or on my lap...

A lot of people here in the US having to give up the orange play sometimes cause it’s just too hard to get there and there should be no reason like this in the US. But smart enough to put something in federal law known as a disabilities audit. so you run across a business that has violations that on it’s it is $10,000. Now the exciting part if you fill out the paperwork when it is finished, you get the $10,000 not the government.. It was a good way to get things started so that business owners stick with building code in the law.

I would love our public toilets to be higher, where I live they are practically on the floor. Getting on ok, getting off not ok
I have been to both Disney World and Disneyland. I live in California in the United States. Personally I think Disneyland is slightly better for wheelchair users. Neither one is bad. I just feel Disneyland was a bit easier to navigate in my wheelchair.
In Australia, all the major theme parks suck ( Dreamworld, wet'n wild, movie world, white water world). But there are heaps of zoos that are fantastic for wheelchairs including the Australia zoo. Taronga zoo is horrid for wheelchairs. And Sea world and sea life are great for wheelchairs.
I’ll be using a wheelchair soon and I think I should also get a GoPro to record some of the crap I’m sure people will ask/say to me.

Even for people with mobility issues that don’t use wheelchairs, higher toilets make it easier to get back up!

Shortly after I turned 26 (in January) I started to have to use a wheelchair. I notice that I get blisters on my thumbs and my hands get really dried out. I was wondering if that happened to you and what you would suggest to help with that.
Chelsea Schuyler yeah, I call it wheelchair hands lol. Probably most people who push their manual chair get it. I would suggest getting some bicycle gloves and some good lotion, but honestly, you’re probably just going to have leather hands. It is what it is. 🤷🏻♂️
