  • In September 2018, Melbourne mum Helen MacGregor's life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
In the years since her diagnosis before her passing in March 2021, Helen became a strong advocate for other patients and was passionate about raising the profile of pancreatic cancer in the hope to accelerate research for the disease. Even in the face of adversity, Helen remained steadfast in her commitment to ensuring others with cancer never felt alone.
In recognition of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, she shares her story with Pancare Foundation in the hope to put the spotlight on the disease.

Wishing you health & wellness.I have a similar story, but I had chemo for 3months, whipples surgery then back on chemo for another 3 months, it came back & I had radiation that seemed to clear it but my follow up ct & pet scans showed it is back and bigger with a secondary in my liver. I’m back on chemo hoping for more time. Staying positive and taking each day as a blessing

Hello Beverley, thanks for your message.
So sorry to read it came back even though at one stage you were well enough to have the operation Whipples. Can I ask you where about was the tumour? You sound so positive and staying even more positive even though it came back bigger and in your liver. Can I ask how long have you been suffering since the diagnosis? How old are you. I’m 59 years old and I’m so not ready to pass away.
I feel scared and can’t get my head around dying yet.
I’m going to try to stay positive like you are.
      Where about do you live?
      I’m from Brighton.
Take care, please continue to stay in touch
      Best wishes Lulu xx

Hi Lucy, my tumour was in the head of the pancreas, I was diagnosed in early November 2019, I live in Nsw Australia and am not suffering, the chemo didn’t bother me much apart from a bit of lethargy, I was on Folforinox for 53hrs every 14 days, 5hrs in the chair and the rest with an infuser bottle attached to my pic line. Throughout this treatment I kept talking to my body, telling myself that I would get through this and refused to listen to the negatives and predictions of an early death..After radiation I went for a holiday to Tasmania with my best friends and enjoyed every moment then came back in time for my follow up consult with my lovely oncologist who gave me the news that it was back, my tumour markers were 7,500 before I went on holidays and had risen to 10,000 when I was back. I am now back on chemo and after 2 treatments my markers are down 2,500 to 7,500 and hopefully will be down further after my next bloods are taken next Wednesday. I continue to stay positive, I’m not sick and I don’t think of dying anytime soon, I live every day and look forward to the next..50% of the treatment is your positive attitude, if you tell your body it’s going to die it will..keep fighting, my hope is by doing this chemo a clinical trial will present itself as a positive and keep me going for more years..I don’t drink or smoke and have a good diet.. keep fighting find yourself a great oncologist..mine is brilliant and we continue to look for clinical trials. I was 75 in Feb and I’m planning my next birthday adventure…Good luck..don’t give up the fight..stay positive, meditate, do a little exercise every day. Take care

Hello Beverley, so lovely to hear from you! Sounds like you had a great holiday with friends, still making memories, so important isn’t it. I was first told my tumour was in the tail, since seeing my oncologist it’s never been in the tail, always in the head! I’m not sure if there’s any importance where it started, the fact it’s there and spread in the liver makes us similar.
I’m just 59 years old and I’m trying so hard to cling onto the fact I won’t make it to an older lady, breaks my heart.
I have 3 beautiful dogs, daughter whom I love more than life itself. She’s being so brave, but I know deep down she’s crushed inside her heart we are so attached much more than the average mum & daughters.
I think you talking to your body while having your chemo is a wonderful idea and I think I’m going to copy you.
What my main worry is hearing the words, we’ve run out of ideas now Lucy.
There are no more types of chemo to try. Actually I’m very scared, petrified of death.
A wonderful friend of mine bought me a book on after life. I’m not really a book reader, but I will keep trying.
It’s marvellous listening to you and your strength is quite amazing Beverley.
Keep it going and do stay in touch.
Oh my cancer markers were 2444. I’ll never forget that number.
I wish the doctors were able to perform more operations on the pancreas, just seems to be the worst part of the body to get cancer in.
Wishing you well, luck and plenty of fun xxx
      Best wishes
      Lucy

@@lucyweston2179 My mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer March 17th of this year. The doctors found a tumor in the head of her Pancreas. Her CA 19-9 was at about 1,100. Her doctor said she isnt a candidate to do the surgery. We decided to get a second opinion and went to the nearest whipple procedure specialist. He took the tumor out a week later. My mom, after recovering from sugery, is undergoing post surgery chemo. It is hard but she is a fighter, and I wanna tell you, if you feel it is not your time, get a second opinion, dont give up. There is still hope. I am continuing to be here for my mom. Her CA 19-9 numbers have gone down significantly, last we checked they were at 80. My mom was diagnosed with Stage 2B pancreatic cancer, it spread to 2 lymph nodes and was about 4cm. Now that the cancer was taken out of her, we are making sure we keep it out.

I’m just at the stage of finding out in my local A&E that they found a mass around my pancreas.. also nodes to my liver. I had a CT Scan with contrast. Since hearing this, my sister has decided to help move things along quicker. Yesterday I had a biopsy of my pancreas and liver under sedation. I’m now waiting again on the results.
All I seem to do is wait. The Consultant said all depends on the results but Chemo will be the next part of my treatment. I feel too young to have such a terrible diagnosis at 59 years old.
Once we have the results of the biopsy I shall write more

I only look at it partially because I do not think she is alive right now if my son got it from a clean life and pass at 57 years old he just turned October 14, 2020. I do not know of any prevention the only time he was in the hospital was when he was about six years old and he had his tonsils removed. He was never sick in his life. He was a champion AAU swimmer he did not miss use his body. In November 2019 he told me he had stomach pains and he wouldn’t say anything else he didn’t want me to know he was in Canada and I’m in the United States. He was my only child as he said there is just you and me,You’ll never get over losing a child he told me that I will outlive him he said there What is nothing that can be done and he passed four months After doctor told him, they would not let me in the country because of the virus so he was all alone because he just lives two years before to a place where he says he was the happiest in his life and we both always wanted to go Vancouver British Columbia he flew straight from Berlin Germany where he was producing and didn’t know anybody or never been there. If the doctor would’ve done a CAT scan on him they would’ve known in November when he had the pain instead of giving him Blood tests etc. He was told seven months and then they started the chemo and then it went to his liver the cancer
he never complained because he didn’t want me to worry. I could have sued the Canadian government I’d have to get an attorney there I’m 86 years old now. It would not bring him back. And it would take years I would be dead by then before I got any dollars. I said if I ever had millions I would give it to Saint Jude hospital and for children that are starving andShriners hospital for the children. I just pray that he is in the right place and that I will see him soon. I am on a small iPad there are mistakes and it’s 4 AM in the morning and I haven’t looked back to correct because I use a mic and correct with the keys. Not long ago I got a bulletin paper from one of the hospitals in Washington DC. And this girl said she has pancreatic cancer she’s in her 30s about she looks like a younger girl up here in the picture where it says cancer. And she wasn’t satisfied she went to another doctor and get some kind of procedure on her and she said that she was cured I cannot believe that she was in her last stages in the medical paper. It is issued by the hospital suggest this is a piece that everybody knew she passed I think it was two years already Ruth Ginsburg She survive longer than I know of anybody I heard. She had an operation because they caught it and died years later.Peace
