How to Replace a Clutch in your Car or Truck (Full DIY Guide)

- Learn how to replace a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing (aka release bearing), pilot bearing and rear main seal in this video!
My clutch was fine but my throwout bearing was bad so I decided to show how to replace all of the wear items while the transmission was off. This includes replacing the pilot bearing which the transmission input shaft goes into, the throwout bearing which engages the pressure plate via the clutch fork, the flywheel which I upgraded to an aluminum light weight flywheel, and finally the rear main seal because that is a common wear item which causes oil leaks in higher mileage motors. With the transmission out, it is worth it to replace all of these parts now instead of having to do this all over again. Most clutch kits come with the throwout bearing and pilot bearing so you just need to buy a rear main seal.

@Adrian De La Garza Jr WOW! Impressive! Congratulations!
Hope I don't have to do it my s10
I was going to try this on my '03, but being my only means of transportation, I was absolutely certain there would be some part or tool I would need in the middle of the job, thus stranding myself.
@@thzzzt that's why I recommend watching the whole video first, then doing the work. Sometimes Chris forgets to mention something before he does it. Because of this, I tried to take my radiator cap off my subaru while it was warm and it didn't work out well...

The grease and bread method for removing the bearing from a blind hole puts you on a whole other level of wizardry.
Idk that worked
hahaha
Can i use bread and butter so i won't waste it after i pulled out the bearing🙄🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣
I've done it with just bread, it looks like it was a lot easier than the grease/bread and less mess!
Best wearing tools removed bearings
How you can remember to explain so many steps and details is amazing. At my age, (64) this would overwhelm me. I’m also a woman, and did not grow up working on cars. This is why boys AND girls should start learning mechanics as CHILDREN!
Some other tips to supplement this great video:
1. Even with the alignment tool, if it’s a plastic one, the clutch disc will likely sag a little. So before you tighten the pressure plate bolts, make sure the alignment tool is centered in the pilot bearing and level.
2. Some transmissions will have a small amount of play at the input shaft so do some research before buying a new
tranny if yours has end play.
3. Another trick to lining up the input shaft to the splines, is manipulating the gear levers and put it in gear then rotate the rear tailshaft until it lines up and fits in. This causes the input shaft to rotate. Then put it back into neutral as you push it in.
4. Don’t hammer in bearing pilot bushings!
chris fix: so now we are doing an oil change
video: since we are disassembling this, might as well rebuild the entire engine

@@junkstough6622 soup as transmission fluid

Club soda as brake fluid ha ha just kidding u shouldnt do that. That would destroy the engine.
22:52 "We want the end of the alignment tool to go all the way into the pilot bearing and that will hold the clutch in the middle for us."
The first solo clutch job I did was on a lift. I didn't have a cart or table so my pressure plate was on the floor by my feet. I installed the clutch plate with the alignment tool, picked up the pressure plate from the floor and as I stood back up the falling clutch plate struck the bridge of my nose while on its way to the floor, where it was chipped against the concrete. Live and learn!
As always, thank you for sharing and stay safe!

Being a female , mechanical skills normally are not on my resume but repairs are so expensive I have learned to do many of them myself and finding a video that breaks it down well enough for this to be done is more times than not very difficult , and leads to many trips to the library or hours of searching on line with taking bits and pieces from each source and tackling the job. Your videos always break it down to where I can understand it and you show every step many times I will search your videos and I do it with your video kinda like we’re doing them together like hands on lol. Chris can fix cars even with bread. :/
When he started pouring bread in that seal, I was like, "wait a minute, it's not April 1st, is it?"
But it all makes sense
Seen it done with a rag also. All it has to do is stop the grease from squirting out around your tool - that way, the only place for it to go is behind the bearing.
A bar of soap also works
Rag is less malleable, so might be able to do it sooner, and without quite the mess. @@aussiebloke609
_Usually_ less mess, but harder to get a good seal sometimes, especially if the cloth is too thick. Remember that it has to fit between the inside of the bushing and the outside of your pushing tool without too much friction, or you'll just wedge it all inside the bushing - but without too much extra room or it just won't work. But it's an option if you don't have bread handy. :-)
I did say "without quite the mess", not "without any mess", for a reason. ;P@@aussiebloke609

So true!
I don't do any of the things ChrisFix teaches us in these videos, but watching them makes me so happy
Aahhh Chris....you make it look so easy...just did my 1994 4x4 Ranger with the help of a friend and 4 days later we have is working....IMHO, it was a tough job, but doable with help...Input has a little play so I need to rebuild transmission but will have to wait...thank you for providing these videos. You inspire me to do it myself sir. Thank You
Love how good you explane every step you make! Great video
