  • A highly suggested Queen performance, live at the Rainbow 1974, this is "In the Lap of the Gods". It started good, but finished great. And more '70's fashion commentary by Coach.

I love this performance .. Freddie looks & sounds amazing!! And Roger’s falsetto?? “Dog whistle ..” quipped Freddie! Roger is the highest placed tenor despite his raspy voice. He was always able to sing consistently high notes up to A5-B5 live in his prime before starting to lose upper range due to age & smoking. 🚬

Yes that was Roger. His voice span was E-2 - E6. It was just him and Freddie on this song. The original band was just Brian May and others, then Brian hired Roger Taylor on drums with a bonus that he could sing and play drums. Freddie, born in Zanzibar was taken into the band, Smile by Brian and Roger and changed their name to Queen with Freddie's insistence. After trying out several bassist, John Deacon was hired. All four wrote hit songs but everything sounded better with Freddie singing per Brian. Thank you for this reaction. So nice to wake up to a Queen song.

I think my father despaired when I unpicked the seems of my jeans up to the knee and stitched big triangles of leopard spotted material. Another pair had big triangles of bright red PVC. I won’t mention my long stringy hair and multicoloured striped sweater… What is even stranger- I joined the Royal Air Force a few years later and found myself telling people to smarten up and not to let their hair get too long!

Thank you! Queen were never afraid to experiment and stretch the boundaries. I agree that this song is too short. This is an early version of the song. Later, it was 'revisited' and changed quite a bit, with an opportunity for the audience to join in with a bit of a chorus. Even though I lived through the seventies, I agree about the fashions. We were experimenting too!
In an interview once, Freddie said with a laugh that looking back, he didn't know what he was thinking when he designed some of the earlier stage costumes....
Now then, I've mentioned Pentatonix before... I've only recently found them myself, since I started checking out reaction videos... I know you like harmonies, and PX are all about the harmonies. Their most recommended song is a cover of the Leonard Cohen song 'Halleluja' - although the Pentaholics would say they don't do covers, they do 'upgrades'. I guess their count of 734 Million views on the official video probably confirms that assertion... 😉

I think it's the BEST of Lap of the God. and there is a point where the camera is in close on Freddie and he feels compelled to nod his head to two beats but he's with his microphone and piano so he just leans to his left and does his 2 nods and goes right back to playing and singing. Hi Folks! Short, yes, but they were about to go into another song. This is a good example of Freddie's desire to not "just copy the record" and start playing with arrangements live. You went there to see certain songs, but you'd end up seeing something you'd never see again. The one constant is the "Brighton Rock" solo that the Doc played practically note for note for 40 years. It never got old. Anyhoo, as far as the 70s fashions and Freddie in particular, all I can say is, for some of us, that was like Tina Turner in a miniskirt to the fellahs. He made it impossible to look away. It's not like he wore that stuff in the street. Shoot, Elton John wore way weirder and yeah, on the street. And not everybody loved 80s fashion. Having lived through it, I'd go back to the 70s in half a minute to avoid the cultural sucking chest wound that was the 80s. Oh well, tomato, tomahto. Cheers, folks.

The song is the first track on the vinyl and the same titled song with revisited added is the last track. The revisited version is slightly longer/slightly different and Freddie's vocals sound weird in one part of it. I suspect his voice was manipulated for the record.
Both from the album Sheer Heart Attack. The song Sheer Heart Attack was written, but not recorded until 1977 for the News Of The World album.
The guitar Brian is playing was made with his father when he was a teenager. The body cane from an old fire place.
Brian has. PhD Degree in Asyrophysics.
Roger has a BSc in Dentistry.

Now there are Bible songs, one is "Jesus" very religious but a fantastic guitar solo and a demo which was originally left off the first album "Mad the Swine" which is just bonkers and i don't know if you would like it. "Soul brother" is a falsetto extravaganza written by Freddie dedicated to Brian

THese live vids are very cool to experiece,but--with Queen, you don't get the gyst of the songs before hearing the studio versions first. Just sayin'... Also-- not sure what Queen sometimes were going for would be easily grasped by you two southern folk(?) Enjoy your channel tho.. T

Hey Coach...get over it...just because you don’t like the fashion......the real Queenies do😁...and OMG...it’s a ballad .....Roger sounds like a banshee ......this was 1974...from the “Sheer Heart Attack” album.....Personally I adore their clothes....maybe it’s because I’m a European....as an aside......when my brother in law got married he wore a purple suede suit.....he had red hair and looked spectacular!🤩

LOL! That's great. Coach has to pick on '70s fashion a bit. It's a requirement for an '80s teen.
