I’d hardly call a 21 year old a “grown man,” but you’re spot on that Regina is so sheltered and lacking in experience that it’s creepier than just the 5 year gap.
@@Rikrobat well, he's by far not the only one. He is the youngest man interested in romancing her by a large margin though, unfortunately.

Larry creeps on Pearl in the third game when presented with her photo. She's like nine in that game and very clearly a child. Still, this chapter sounds like a yikes.

Moe's worst crime is being annoying, at least he isn't into Regina
He might be unfunny, but he's not a creep.
Moe is truly the most normal out of everyone in that circus
Moe is honestly the best part of clown court. He makes a lot of jokes, but when the time comes, he's a reasonable and rational adult about everything.
The rest of the circus? No. Gumshoe, arrest all of these gross men now!
Characterwise he honestly isn't bad, but gameplay wise, he is the only character where Pressing in court deals damage, none of the others in this case, or past and future cases is this true for. Makes his testimony one of the worst in the franchises

I also think the killer in this case is pretty decent too, I really like that he knows he is super in the wrong for wanting to kill a child but just couldn't take the fact that Regina just doesn't show any remorse and kinda even shows to an outsider that she is glad that Batt is dead and that Acro should feel happy too. Like it could be handled better but I think his motivations and his breakdown are genuinely pretty interesting.
Also the stuff with Franziska (not much of it but yeah) in this case are pretty decent too
Max, Ben/Trilo, Batt and Regina all fucking suck so much in this case tho like omg, that and the backtracking is atrocious and this is a 3 part trial case for pretty much no reason, way too long

16:27 And here we have one of the major reasons people hate this case - the SUPER creepy fact that multiple grown men are attempting to date/marry a girl who’s sixteen and acts about five.
The worst part is, even without her father around, *it's legal.* 🤮
(16 is the youngest age someone can marry in Japan during the time the game takes place and in the state of California. I was really really hoping that the wiki would mention that she'd need her father's permission but nope.)
When Max said he wanted to marry her, I was grossed out, but then Ben... (and don't try to tell me that it's the puppet)
They had one very easy fix too.

@@Sara_Hohman Yeah, fingers crossed that whoever becomes Regina’s legal guardian after this (maybe Moe?) will do a better job of protecting her on that front.
I love that you can hear SungWon drop the "Phoenix voice" when reading Phoenix's lines complaining about Moe, Phoenix and SungWon merged in to one being through sheer irritation at the clown.
Forget the clown, Regina being predated on by multiple grown men, is the worst part of the case. The comment that Phoenix, made where the implication that her charm gives her control of men, is even worse.
I do wonder if it’s a cultural difference / translation issue. Not defending the case at all, but it didn’t stand out that much to me when comparing it to several romance manga series.

@@melvv18 - Right, but if the age of consent is lower in different places, then it’s not as strange to have a 16yo being seen as a legal adult. So naturally you might see that in the media. I’ve also said this before, I hardly think a 21yo should be called a “grown man.” Yes, there is five years between them, but let’s not pretend Max is a mature adult at 21.
Again, this isn’t to defend this trope/normalized attitude or say it’s okay, but you’re speaking like Max is 30 when he isn’t. Phoenix’s remarks about Regina, however, those are inexcusable.
LOL, it's really good that SungWon and Steve are here to minimize the backtracking. I distinctly remember wandering around this circus like a doofus multiple times because there was no indication that there were new dialogue options.
And Angel finally learns one of the... "interesting" facets of this case. At least we have Steve's Moe to keep us... sane? Sure, let's go with that.

Russell Berry's name (and the initials "R.B." that both he and Regina share) may be a reference to the famous Russell Brother's Circus.
"Berry" was likely chosen for the pun-based name of his circus (Berry/Very Big Circus).
Huh I would have thought it was the Ringling Bros, the most famous circus ever.

and honestly so far Moe isn't that bad, in fact he's the ace attorney character i relate the most to. bc i laugh the same way (usually at my own jokes).....
Personally, I resented him because of how badly his laughs slowed down my ability to move progress through the dialogue. I found it very frustrating

It’s funny af how Ghondor was aged up in Xenoblade 3 because she says swear words but Regina wasn’t aged up despite being legally underage outside of Japan at the time
Ghondor wasn't aged up to my knowledge, she's also 18 in the Japanese script. She's just comically short, haha.

...man if this playthrough had started just a few weeks earlier that would've been a way timlier reference, but I went through the process of writing it out, so I'm in too deep now.
This game was made years ago, and yet the crazy thing regarding Regina and her “suitors” is apparently Japan’s age of consent law was even lower than 16 at the time this game was made. It was just recently raised from 13 to 16 just last year!
There's actually been laws in most prefectures (states) banning anyone over 18 from having sex with younger people since the 70s. So it would still be a crime for them to pursue Regina. Unfortunately it doesn't count as a crime if the relationship is judged "sincere", which is probably why they want to marry her... (Women can get married from 16. Men have to be 18.) Also where I grew up (Kagoshima) people usually only paid a fine of maybe US$2000 if they broke this law.
So Japan's laws are a little bit better than people think but still not good.

I can at least expect the 16/21 age gap because it's a stupidly common trope in older Japanese media. Like I hate it and it's gross, but I've seen it come up so much in Japanese media. But the Trilo/Ben romance angle is soooo bad
I really do like this case, but the romance angle is so unnecessary and makes it awful to replay
YEP and that’s why I love the anime version of this case more than the case itself. No skeevy romance, and the interesting parts of this case are focused on much more
I gotta be honest I genuinely think Turnabout Bigtop is way too overhated , it's certainly not my favorite case by a long shot but I still liked it and consider it good
I hope Angel ends up liking this case just to annoy Sungone
Honestly for how skeevy and in-your-face the romance is, I’d say the hate is justified. It has great ideas aside from that, but the romance was totally unnecessary (and the anime does this case a lot of favors by getting rid of that aspect)
