    We have something very similar in Melbourne, Australia at our tram squares. Basically a tram square is where both our electric trains and trams intersect one another at a level crossing. The hinged gates are used so that they can avoid contact with the tram lines.

      @railtrolley Před 6 lety +1

      At Riversdale Rd. Praying mantis gates. The crossing when operating for trains also opens "catch" points on the tram lines. The tram wheel gouges in the road surface indicates that the catch points have done their job.

      So the hinged boom gates are in Melbourne too but it’s used for tramsquares where trains intersect with tramlines

    Those gates are very cool.
    Only one company that makes them, Western Cullen Hayes. And they are desinged like that so they can go all the way up with out hitting powerlines or have it slanted.

    Please come to Suffolk and film the railroad crossings on Saratoga Street, the two roads besides the bypass for cars to go over the tracks, and the three right of the Main Street bypass. I'd greatly appreciate it. They mostly have mechanical bells, which makes them good.

    The traffic light looks interesting going from a green to red to flashing red.

    • @TheTrainStationinc
      @TheTrainStationinc Před 10 lety

      Without being there to see it I'm pretty confident I can elaborate on the traffic signals.
      If it weren't for the railroad crossing there would only be a stop sign. In, fact, when there is no train the traffic lights are not needed and they flash so that basically that's all they are is a stop sign. Notice the green light for the cross road. The visors are smaller than the yellow and red. This is because where there would normally be a green light is actually a flashing yellow light. There is NO green light for that road. When a train is detected by the crossing signals they send a signal to the traffic lights before it is time for the crossing to activate. The lights then go from flashing yellow, to yellow, then red and give a green light to traffic crossing the tracks. The only purpose of the traffic light is to prevent traffic from becoming trapped on the tracks. When the train clears and the gates begin to go up, the traffic lights go back to flashing red, with the flashing yellow on bottom in place of the green for the other road.
      Wow! Can I ramble or what?

      Millenniumforce When I went to Old Dominion, when I had time, I chased the container trains from the Norfolk International Terminal to Chesapeake where I think the main line junctioned. The railroad crossings used to have wider crossbucks that looked like those in the countryside along with signals and gates. As some roads were widened, modern crossings replaced the old ones. I think the crossing on Granby St. (Wards Corner off I-64) was a quad gate. I was last there in 2009 visiting my mother and I think all the crossings have been replaced. I hope you can get a chance to check this out if you get there again. The next time I get up there I will share that experience too. Keep up the good work.
