- This is a video I made in Norfolk Virginia on the light commuter rail line THE TIDE. 2 Trains in each direction going through a railroad crossing with a unique hinged gate.
Please check out my other famous video's that made me millions of views.

I love the simplicity of this design, just an electromagnet and the wire...
I love how the second train has a huge picture of a train on it
Ikr
the GOOPER ง
the GOOPER I do not like it!
We have something very similar in Melbourne, Australia at our tram squares. Basically a tram square is where both our electric trains and trams intersect one another at a level crossing. The hinged gates are used so that they can avoid contact with the tram lines.
At Riversdale Rd. Praying mantis gates. The crossing when operating for trains also opens "catch" points on the tram lines. The tram wheel gouges in the road surface indicates that the catch points have done their job.
So the hinged boom gates are in Melbourne too but it’s used for tramsquares where trains intersect with tramlines
Awesome Video Alan!
Those gates are very cool.
Only one company that makes them, Western Cullen Hayes. And they are desinged like that so they can go all the way up with out hitting powerlines or have it slanted.
Thanx for posting. I do prefer the larger freight trains though.....but still cool.
Second train had a great paint scene
Tejasnite q C
Tejasnite I didn't like the second train I don't like the painting.

Hi
@@origamichannelandotherstuf4766 why?
Very Interesting and unique!
That gate is pretty cool... Great Video
very nice Railroad Crossing! Great Video
The only thing i paid attention to was calculating the distance of the camera to intersection by timing the time the sound had to travel from the banging of the hinge
I’ve never scene these types of crossing gates but great catch of the Light Rail Trains.
Very nice indeed. Keep up the good work!
Epic vid.
I Like Hinged Railroad Crossing Gates! They're Awesome!! :D
Me trying to get to get home:
Me:GOD GOD DAMMIT
*rams through the gates*
Great video!
Great Video!
Most Awesome Vid!!!!!!!
Those trains have funny horns!
I was expecting s big train and here comes this adorable baby light rail.
Nice video as always
I love hinged gates
That WC Hays e bell is nice.
Nice vidoe
Please come to Suffolk and film the railroad crossings on Saratoga Street, the two roads besides the bypass for cars to go over the tracks, and the three right of the Main Street bypass. I'd greatly appreciate it. They mostly have mechanical bells, which makes them good.
WOW! Two trains at a time!
Tyranitar Time it’s edited
Nice video
That looks homemade to me with the hinged part hanging on a wire attached to the mast. I like Japanese hinged gates more.
nice!
railroad crossings are cool but i like it
Pretty smart people to figure those gates.
Sounds like a Hancock air whistle
strange never seen one like that , the gate in my town is so long it needs a peg leg on the end in order to keep the gat off the ground XD
hahaha thats like a UK level crossing
dat air-whistle though
The gates remind me of gates at a certain parking garage in San Francisco
I realize after look second time at the video, Thanks
Looks like that crossing gate is designed that way because it straightens up as its lower like there's an hinge right there.
What are they using? Sounds like a Hancock Air Whistle! On a new tram? The wrap was badass. They didn't signal right though two longs a short and a long for crossings. Weird should be a federal required horn signal.
I'm always afraid that hinged gates are gonna break to easily
Sometimes they do
Yup unknown
The first crossing with a hinged gate has four lights and a wch e bell. The second one is perfect.
I filmed some LRT trains at a crossing in the Mall of America this weekend which has hinged gates.
Nice💉
In Holland we haven't this kind of crossings.
Those are Western Cullen Hayes hinged gates. They are the only US company that currently makes hinged gates. They still make hinged wishbone gates, too.
Thank you for that information
You are very welcome.
We are starting to implement 2 horizontal tarragon one mechanism and vertical lines to prevent people from going under or around..
The traffic light looks interesting going from a green to red to flashing red.
Without being there to see it I'm pretty confident I can elaborate on the traffic signals.
If it weren't for the railroad crossing there would only be a stop sign. In, fact, when there is no train the traffic lights are not needed and they flash so that basically that's all they are is a stop sign. Notice the green light for the cross road. The visors are smaller than the yellow and red. This is because where there would normally be a green light is actually a flashing yellow light. There is NO green light for that road. When a train is detected by the crossing signals they send a signal to the traffic lights before it is time for the crossing to activate. The lights then go from flashing yellow, to yellow, then red and give a green light to traffic crossing the tracks. The only purpose of the traffic light is to prevent traffic from becoming trapped on the tracks. When the train clears and the gates begin to go up, the traffic lights go back to flashing red, with the flashing yellow on bottom in place of the green for the other road.
Wow! Can I ramble or what?
2 tides coming
I agree. although I think they need to have em properly used
Tide crossings cruise through a handle gate
Will you be in this area again? I'd like to see more angles of the traffic lights operating with the crossing. Great video, keep them coming!
Maybe in 3 weeks
Millenniumforce When I went to Old Dominion, when I had time, I chased the container trains from the Norfolk International Terminal to Chesapeake where I think the main line junctioned. The railroad crossings used to have wider crossbucks that looked like those in the countryside along with signals and gates. As some roads were widened, modern crossings replaced the old ones. I think the crossing on Granby St. (Wards Corner off I-64) was a quad gate. I was last there in 2009 visiting my mother and I think all the crossings have been replaced. I hope you can get a chance to check this out if you get there again. The next time I get up there I will share that experience too. Keep up the good work.
Caught the commuter train with the unique ad across one side, again! GoTraffic.com must have done the back-to-back 4-6-4 streamliners to advertise their services; too bad all the DL&W Alco Hudsons had been scrapped and the ad guys had to work from archive photos.
where they really that close?
GO railroad crossing, GO
1:05 the tide washes away
Why does the bell sound so quiet and a bit scratchy ?
and my favorite bell type WCH
So that's why they're like that.

whats a hinged gate
That's probably the cheapest way to make a folding gate I have seen.
This crossing needs Cantilever
A hinged gate can't be on a cantilever crossing
@@tkprod19 yeah it can
Nice!
Have you seen the crossing we have in Ireland? There cool too....
I'll get one soon :)
Did you call and report it ?
You have to come to Massachusetts we have trains that go 150 mph or faster
I gave you a 1,000 Likes
what kind of train is this that was going by the wire
Siemens built S70.
Why do they use a hinge gate?
Power lines above.
Where is it located
Why do I feel like in 2014 we should have better technology then a wire that pulls the end straight hahaha
looks like the japanese gates or a broken gate
Uh oh traffic lights went out
what land is that
Rarely railroad crossing
Never seen one of those
Like the gates, but what was that thing that went over the crossing? A Tyco locomotive?
the tide went over!
curraheewolf No, it was a Life-Like.
LOL!!
Next time it'll probably break in half
It’s for under bridge reasons.
ok thats not right, those traffic lights should've been in a All-Red Flash after the gate arms were already down. but instead when the gate arms come back up, then they start to flash. but good video tho.
i record trains its so creepy to see a crossing gate like that
i saw this crossing before
It seems pointless to have a hinge when a straight bar would do. What is the point of them?
Mr_Ordinary101 YT oh that makes sense
2:07
Do they make the gates like this because the bar would be to long?
No it's because there are power lines above it.
I figured, thanks, you're an awesome video maker.
You remember the guy in the bad track video that said that the track wasn't bad at all? I'm going to call my uncle and see if that's true.
Epic Loser They fixed it about 1 month after I aired the video It looks brand new now and I made a video of it and its up on youtube
KK, do you have steam?
2 street cars
It's not paint it's a sticker someone told me
Thats dangerous....

Why does Norkfolk Virginia need a light rail system for?
Because the roads are jammed
Millenniumforce I thought it was relatively small.
CarterMc3 With 2 Universities, a Naval Base, an Oceanfront Resort, many places to shop, and numerous festivals during the year, Norfolk/Va Beach/ Tidewater is hardly small. The Tide has been long overdue and I hope they can get the rest of it done to the Oceanfront. As an Old Dominion alum, and visiting my mother, the traffic was terrible.

i live in southeastern va
Isn't that normal?
1:16 hitmark......................hitmark......................hitmark?
Is it broken?
No.
Hinged gates are supposed to be like that
