The song was based on a real man in Russia. Hence the, hey, hey, hey, hey in the song, which is reminiscent of Russian folk song. Rasputin took a lot to die. Apparently his official cause of death was drowning. It’s a fascinating piece of history.
I love this band! My Canadian uncle introduced me to them. My uncle is gone, but I can still enjoy them. I was 7 or 8 and I'm now 53. Long time ago. Surprises me how much time has gone by. Every time.

I don't remember running into Boney M. outside of "Mary's Boy Child" at Christmas until a few years ago. "Rasputin" gets more play than "Ma Baker" but you might enjoy "Ma Baker" which is also based on a real person (Ma Barker, an outlaw from the 1930s). :)

Love Boney M! My favorite Christmas song is their version of Mary's Boy Child. Boney M is the whole group not just the guy (can't remember his name atm). Rasputin was one of their biggest hits.
I bought the album back in 1978 and immediately fell in love with this song.

Rasputin is a prominent figure in Russian history, and a bit of a legend. The song sounds different bc it has Russian folklore elements in the beat & the dance is supposed to resemble the Kazachok (traditional Russian dance). You should've listened to the lyrics bc they told the story. 🙂
Edit: I forgot to add, I've always heard it pronounced like "Bonnie M". I think that's how you're supposed to say it. They were pretty popular back in the day & this song is still catchy today.
I grew up loving Boney M, but I only found out in recent years that the lead 'singer' didn't actually sing on any of their hit songs.
Noone actually played any of the music. It was a whole "studio" band. The woman never sang, Bobby never sang...he died not ever having seen one dollar from all these "hits"

Well of course he got some, but the producers and suits took most.
He received 9 cents per song played on the radio. Which made them very rich during their fame but in the end it wasn`t enough to live from anymore when the hits stopped coming. He asked his producer for 100k, which he got but in return they made him sign a paper in which he gave them his image the rights, royalties, basically everything.
He went from being super rich, to having to live with his mother with his family and live on welfare. After that it all went downhill with drugs and booze, wrecking his life and marriage.
So yeah, he died lonely and poor...
@@JamoZNL Bruh... $100k, 30-40 years ago, would've been equivalent to 1 million today prob. In addition, he had also made *a lot* of money during their period of popularity. They prob didn't want to give him more bc he was essentially a glorified dancer. You could argue they were cutthroat, but it wasn't really their fault he squandered all his wealth & wrecked his life... You were deceptive in how you presented the situation ("not ever having seen one dollar" 🤨)
The ladies are still holding concerts (or were up to a few years ago, internationally). So they still have their royalties & still making money...

my granda lived in same hood where sopot festival took place ( in zagreb ) sopot is also name of hood .. and she saw this live she was here and told me bout it :D so was my dad he was a kid i think :)
Sopot is a town in Poland. Sopot Festival is still held there and has been since 1961. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Zagreb.

What's crazy, is your not listening to the lyrics. They're telling you a little bit about to this crazy paranoid Czar of Russia. Dancing around on stage, it's called performing a show. I stopped going to concerts, because of lack of performance. Back in the day, watching Micheal moonwalk or the lean, and such was fun to watch. Bands/artists use to perform, now they just get on stage and just play...boring.

We would go out dancing all night Friday night Saturday night..everyone had a good time you would dress up you could go out on the dance floor alone. And be dancing with everyone around you we had fun.

Boney M was not mainstream, but they had a following. I've heard a few of their songs and liked them, but never really followed him. As far as jumping around, Boney M just wanted to be entertaining. Most music videos today have dancers in the backround. Most of the biggest music artists in history didn't dance or have dancers. They let their music alone entertain people.
They were mainstream in Europe.
In Germany they had 8 number #1 Singles, including 7 in a row. In the UK they had 2 #1 hits and 10 top 10 hits. The band had little success in the US where only 4 songs reached the Billboard Hot 100, with the 'Rivers of Babylon' peaking at #30. Rasputin never charted in America, but it was a number #1 hit in Germany, Austria, Australia and Belgium, as well as #2 in the UK, Argentina, Switzerland, Spain and Finland. It also went back to #11 in the UK a couple of years ago (something to do with Tiktok)
