Quick video on how to remove the turbo on a Saab 9-3 with the 2.0 4 cylinder turbo. This is applicable for the model years of 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 (03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12)
Use common sense. I am not responsible for anything you do to your vehicle.
Thank you so much for this. My turbo is blown and I’m going to replace it myself thanks to you!
No problem 👍🏼
Thanks for the video it helped me a ton.
There's been some questions about the studs and I can see why. All my studs stayed in place, both on the turbo by the exhaust and also where the turbo mounts to the engine. This makes it impossible to "push the turbo back" as stated in the video. I had to pry the exhaust away from the turbo first, which was not easy at all, but eventually I was able to move it far enough to get it off the studs, and then push the turbo back to get it off the mounting studs. Hope that helps others!
Thanks for that info. Yeah every job presents it’s challenges for sure. As they say. Every 30 minute job is only one snapped bolt away from a 6 hour ordeal.
THANK YOU for this VIDEO!! My Saab 9-3 2005, is now up and running better then before!
Absolutely spot on!. OK mine's not a Saab (Brit. Vaux Signum 2.0t) but it has a Z20NET motor which is basically the same as yours. Thank you very much.
No problem!
how did you get the first 3 bolts off???? you just cut through it! i need to know! trying tto clean my catalytic converter and those bottom 2 of 3 are in a tight spot!
nice one dude, i owe you a beer
Amazing! Maybe next life time.
It’s a tough job to be sure.
when replacing that exact same thing...will i need new gaskets? and which ones? thanks!
It is very helpful. Thank you.
No problem.
On the 1st set of 3 studs, 2 are easy but the 3rd one? did you remove that line in-front of it?
Thanks for the video. Now do we use a that sledge hammer on a turbo
I'm a new subscriber you have good information on your videos 👍
broke one of the banjo bolts on the turbo side, now the turbo has to come out smh.. lol "aw shit... here we go again"
..hopefully i can extract the broken bolt piece stuck in there and keep this turbo.
Good luck to you. 🍀👍🏼
@@DirtRoadAutoRepair got it done without a problem! Even extracting the broken bolt was easy. Used a flathead screwdriver for that. My saab is a 2005 Arc, which has a different, slightly bigger turbo. So there were a few extra things to remove and do. Not much, nothing crazy. Thanks you and this video!
I want to see the video of you trying to get those bolts back in.😂😂
lol it’s long and frustrating!
How long did it actually take you to get the turbo out
Took me about an hour without having to replace lines
Can it be Turbo problem if u have P0300 and Turbo only going MAX to half when im full throttle??
Good question
If I were to change my turbo on my saab 9-3 to a bigger one. Would i need to do some sort of remap for the ECU?
That’s above my pay grade. My assumption would be not necessarily, but if you want to optimize/maximize power (guessing that’s the reason for the bigger turbo) then yes tuning would be a good idea.
Clip on the connector just needs to push in and it comes out no need to take off
Good to know!
How was the reinstall? I imagine it was a huge undertaking!
It is not for the faint of heart.
Can I use this turbo on a different brand and model car? I found this car at a junkyard and am trying to get the turbo to put in a different car.
You can. Will it be optimal? Idk. Depends on a lot of thinks. It’s not as simple as slapping a turbo on an engine.
Hello
Is there any gasket on the 3 exoust bolts?
Off of the headers yes but not past the turbo
thanks buddy!
No problem!
I will leave it to specialist Saab garage in Stockport 😱
It’s not a job for the faint of heart. It nice you’ve got a saab dealer close. They can be hard to find.
@@DirtRoadAutoRepair yes RTJ brilliant garage 👌
Is it the same for a 1.8 turbo model?
How did u manage to take out the exhaust studs?
Why would you..?
You just take the nuts off, and then slide the turbo down, off the studs and you're set.
@@ThorKarlsson well this guys doesn't have his studs in im assuming thats why he was asking. the ones from the turbo to the downpipe/cat.
Did anyone ever figure this out??
@@benjensen8147 Try removing the thermostat housing and coolant expansion tank, then put a 6 inch 1/4 extension on a small ratchet and swing the ratchet kind of inside where the thermostat housing sits.
How do you know if your turbo has went out car smoking a whole lot and doesn't quit was stopped smoking after running a little while now we're not stop smoking at all very thick white smoke what could be the problem
sounds more like a head gasket!
Hi, I just buyed a 2007 Cabrio 9-3. Wonderful one but 2.0 and no pressure, Is that normal that I find hard to reach 120 on fifth's? Is that the Turbo?
Hi I have the same issue , what happened?
I was told there was computer work that needs to be done is this true or can I just get an identical certified OEM Saab 9-3 turbo straight mounted on after the old one comes off
To my knowledge no computer work needs to be done unless you are putting in a different sized turbo. OEM turbo can just be straight mounted after you pull the old one.
@@DirtRoadAutoRepair thank you that's what I suspected when the specialty shop told me that I was kind of suspicious. I've never heard of any other Saab guys talking about computer stuff with a turbo swap with identical Turbo
Probably because those computers are sought-after commodities.
@leahcim38 yes but I wasn't taking the computer out or anything. So I don't know why them being a sought-after commodity would have very much to do with replacing the Turbo. Does it need computer work or when changing the turbo? If keeping the computer the same.
HOWD YOU GET THAT BOTTOM BOLT OFF😭
its a serious pain.
Is wanna do this but I'm worried I will mess it up
Not going to sugar coat it. It’s not a beginner friendly job. If you have the skills though, or a only one way out and I have to make it mentality, you can do it if you set your mind to it.
@@DirtRoadAutoRepair i have done clutches gearboxes brakes all suspension parts.spent a lot of time tinkering with cars just never done a turbo
@@adampadum12345 Did you do it?
@@janismuizulis6203 no i blew the car up racing a golf
Where is the oil leaking from on your engine near the turbo?
I came to this video looking for clues as to why I have oil smoke coming from the turbo area. There's no oil dripping under.
It could be your valve cover gasket leaking onto the exhaust manifold.
@@DirtRoadAutoRepair I thought that. Since I wrote the first post I've found that the smoke is coming from under the lower heat shield.
Oil is getting in there somehow and is vaporising.
I can't see any wet oil anywhere.
The car in the video definitely needs the valve cover gasket replaced. If you replace the valve cover gasket and it doesn't stop your oil leaking also replace your vacuum pump gaskets.
@@s2s536 Thanks for the help.
My oil leak turned out to be from the power steering pump.
where did the studs go?
Came out with the nuts. Sometimes the nut won’t break free and the stud just turns out instead.
I put new turbo at My saab 9'3 4 cil ,but still no got Boost ,I change because got oil on the intercooler,so ,now the car no power , turbo no work like before..if someone know how to fixe thanks
Did you check the turbo that you put in before or was it from a certified dealership not some overseas Turbo? Also you need to know where the turbo came from because to my understanding people can that's what the computer and and have it push mower air in don't know how hell of a lot about it I'm getting ready to do a turbo job and this is what the garage told me if it helps then good
Nearly easier to remove the whole engine 😅
Lol yeah just about.
Is this for the arc or the linear?
this is a linear. not sure if they are the same. Maybe someone else can chime in.
@@DirtRoadAutoRepair Thanks! Yea we were on our road trip to Ohio from Oregon and our turbo started going out in NM and we made it to Ohio. She’s at a Saab shop here getting fixed now. Thought I might be able to do it but decided to take to a shop.
Great video but where is all the nice work
Why do you skip the actual wrenching? That is what you need to understand how to do the work...
My videos are ment to be short and to the point so I don't show bolt turning. I started this channel because I was tired of skipping through other peoples 20 minute long videos to see 3 minutes of useful info. Sorry if its not what you want to see, but Im sure someone on YT has made that 20 min video of this job. Best of luck to you.
POS Chevy Cobalt engine.
