TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA - After an outstanding Malaysian street food tour in Terengganu the day before, the next day we took a day trip to Kuala Berang, a city of Terengganu known again for their tempoyak (fermented durian paste).
As you may know by now, I’m more than a little obsessed with tempoyak.
Restoran Aroma Kampung - We started the morning with breakfast at Restoran Aroma Kampung known for their freshwater catfish curry with tempoyak. We also ordered pretty much all the other dishes they offered, and the food was spectacular.
Total price - 40 MYR ($9.81)
Warisan Pahlawan Resort - But the real highlight of Malay food for the day was going to Warisan Pahlawan Resort where the Aunty is known as one of the best local food cooks in Kuala Berang. Again, she prepared for us local Malaysian food from Kuala Berang, nearly everything dish including huge amounts of fermented durian paste (tempoyak). It was a Malaysian meal of my dreams. She also wanted to cook for us a dish of bilimbi fruit, simmered with coconut milk, which was incredible.
This home-cooked village meal in Terengganu was one of the best meals of this trip to Malaysia. I loved the herbs, the Vietnamese coriander, the torch ginger, and of course, the fermented durian paste.

I know many have said this before but I truly respect and appreciate Mark covering Malay cuisines in his Malaysia series. Most people just stick to Jalan Alor, Malacca, Penang...most of the time they don't even try ANY Malay cuisines which is a big lost because it is after all MALAYsia.
Agreed
Yes, you right...chinese and indian foods can get all around the world....they should try to eats Malay foods...Malaysia have many places to get good foods not just KL and Penang...
@@khairulazhar8118 Exactly. Even if they don't have time to venture out of KL, there are quite a number of delicious Malay food in KL itself. Heck, I think even a simple nasi kukus ayam goreng rempah would impress a lot of tourist.
Thank you Cherry!
Good point...
My parents went to Malaysia last year and they said Malaysia was a food emporium. Food stalls, street food, exotic fruits and restaurants everywhere with various flavours. Meals are cheap too by North American standards.
yess...we love our food so much... cook with love, eat with passion..😘
That's coz the US Dollar fares higher than the Malaysian ringgit hahahahha

I'm sure many foreigners are eager to try tempoyak after watching Mark's video. Hope the price of tempoyak will not skyrocket!!
Indeed
About 4 years ago I started watching Mark Weins' videos about Malaysia. He wasn't popular then, but I subscribed because I enjoyed his content. I'm so glad he is successful. He deserves it.

This video makes me want to visit Malaysia more than any other Malaysia video because of the rain. It is sooo soothing. I watched this twice because I wanted to hear the rain. Thanks Mark for doing this during the rain. It's really nice!! 👍 👍
We malaysian also love rains. Because when it rains, everything will slows down and make you stop for while. It is kinda relaxing therapy.
If you wanna come, please check for the raining season first. Usually it's at the end till the start of the year 😊
There are only two seasons in Malaysia, rainy season or hot season.
I love how they live with their cultures in peaceful.
Really loved this episode. The rain (the sound of it on the roofs), the buildings, the aunties, the food. It all reminded me of back in the days at my grandma and grandpa. Thanks Mark!

Thanks for promoted our cuisine to the world Mark. Keep it up. Your food hunting is even better than local people. Lol. Love from Pahang, Malaysia.
What I love about Mark Weins as a travelling vlogger is, he doesn't just enjoy and eat but he really learn and scrutinize everything...and you as a viewer won't just enjoy too but also can learn a lot😊😊😊mabuhay!!!!
If tempoyak is not on the #1 list of Mark's favourite food this year, I'm gonna be extremely disappointed.
You're so obsessed with tempoyak Mark more than the Malays here, haha I'm proud man🤗
I'm Javanese and not even dare to try tempoyak
Actually I prefer east javanese foods, which is more salty, umami, and spicy tgan central java's foods. But for tempoyak, I think it is a really weird combination. I'll never eat durian with rice, because it's not used to.
@@rachmawanatmajiperdana8866 does tempoyak famous in Indonesia?
AFAIK it's famous in South Sumatera, Palembang and Lampung area
I'm from Javanese too, from Central Java, I'm prefer lil bit spicy or maybe hot like sambal

I'm not fanatic durian fruit, I never try tempoyak before but I will next time

What an awesome way to cook; picking fresh herbs and veggies from the garden evoking nostigic recolections of how my grandmere cooked.
I am a Malaysian and a Malaysian food hunter. Even I have not been to the places that Mark has been. Mark has eaten food that I have not. I admire his willingness to travel into rural areas in search of great food. And he has asked the right guys to be his guide. Malays for Malay food, Chinese for Chinese food and Indians for Indian food, when in Malaysia. Keep on going Mark. I love what you have done here. I'll keep on supporting you. Cheers! 🙂

Food in Malaysia is just so real, deep and genuine. If you're going to eat fish, then it's fish cooked the real way.
I saw in my life that first Indian cuisine has become popular around the globe, then Chinese, then Thai, then Arabian, then Japanese (shushi) . Now I think it is the turn of Malay cuisine.
Malaysia := nature + food ...wowwww. can't wait to go. 😘😘

There are so many durians in Malaysia and Southeast Asia countries, the same as korean miso Gochujang. that means Durian is malaysian Miso :)
강북 미식회 not true. Tempoyak is not very very commonly eaten. It is a treat. Durian is not as cheap to make as miso or gochujang.

Most people in CZcams traveling eats dont even try to eat the traditional stuff of the country they are in and they dont deserve to travel or the money they get from CZcams they are just living for free. This is why mark is such a great man and youtuber.

I agree! The Malaysian videos are awesome. I’ve never tried Durian because but after this video I’m convinced!!
If you cannot eat durian.. you are not true food lover.. lol..
there are two types of people eating durian . first who fall for durian and the other one is hate them . gdluck

Every place he visits outside of USA they use alot of fresh herbs, and spices. And be full of flavor, here in America it's mostly imitation in a bottle and loaded with sodium and greasy😟😟

Full of flavor. Oh yes 😊
I don't know where you are eating, but I know my husband (who was a chef for years) and hundreds of other chefs all over America could disprove your statement with one visit to their kitchens. I even know chefs who cultivate their own herb gardens to use in their cooking.
Oh, and one obvious bonus in the majority of American kitchens is far superior sanitation practices!
