My son’s 3rd grade teacher had her first year of teaching in 2020-2021. We started all virtual, the decision to do so was last minute, and then went hybrid in April 2021. I have no idea how, but she managed to look like a seasoned veteran and was always so supportive when kids were struggling. I felt like she and I were a team working together for my son’s best interest. That woman is a saint and she’s leaving the district for better pay in a new district closer to her home next year. While I am incredibly sad that my daughter won’t have her as a teacher, I am SO proud of her for advocating for herself.

As a someone within the payroll, I can relate so much to that. The difference was I lost my dad on my moms' B-day and then six months later my aunt died. Schools don't care. They want you back to work. To be unfair, the whole US take on mental health and grieving is really psychotic to me. We have all this talk about mental health awareness, but do we really practice it??? NO! We're not Canada or other Euro-centric nations. The whole US has a really toxic mind-set over the topic of depression and grieving. It is a nation about the bottom line and could careless. There is no compassion in this nation. I received better mental care by my Economics professor who is from Italy than anyone here in the states. I apologized to him for missing out the classes and tired to do my online assignments, while also attending family duties because my mother couldn't. I explained everything to him and he listened attentively in a way that I never received from anyone besides my own mom. He understood the difficulties I had and told me it was okay. He curved the grade so I would pass the class with high grade so that my GPA would get higher to receive book grants. If he went by US school laws, I would've failed that class and lose my grant money. Again, the US has a strange way with handling depression and grief. It is good that your music teacher cried... bottling up emotions like that isn't good. Must've been a grand best friend to that teacher. So sad that he couldn't exercise his right as a teacher to take a temporary leave of absence to attend to his needs for grieving. The system is so broken that it is soulless.

My kiddo thrives on in-person school and we couldn't send him back until he was fully vaccinated because we're an immunocompromised household. This meant he was home for 18 months. My son's special ed elementary school teacher would get on Zoom and play Toca Boca games with him to get him used to Zoom. His former para for his old middle school must have spent hours finding videos on CZcams to keep his attention. Both of those women are priceless and are serious examples of why we don't pay teachers nearly enough for what they do.

At 16:50 when Mrs wooly says she has kids that miss weeks at a time I can speak from experience when we miss more than a week of school as fall so far behind. back in November I went to school for one day and then I stayed off for the rest of the month untill December the 6th whilst eveyone else was still in school and then last month I was off for a few weeks aswell and I've been off in-between that but it seriously throws us so far behind. And as a student who already struggles in school because I absolutely hate it there I have to LITTERLY forse myself into school and even then I won't go to all the classes I can say that the teachers doing even just small things can help. Like I enjoy giving teachers fist bumps it always puts a smile on my face, it doesn't harm anyone and it just enlightens my mood but most teachers won't give me a fist bump. the only reason I come to school is to see three teachers and I don't think they realise how thankful I am for them. Laura, Pauline and Mrs Moulse are the only reason I show up to school, when I see them they always but a smile on my face and it's the minor things they do that make school okay for even just a few minutes. For example I wasnt in school today and I got an email of Pauline and Laura asking if I was okay and just checking in on me, and Pauline said she brought me a chocolate bar because shes proud of me for coming into school the past few weeks and shes proud of me for not being kicked out and she's just proud of me and that made me cry because I've never ever liked any teachers all they've ever done is scream and shout at me but Pauline and Laura are patience with me and when I refuse to go to class they sit me down and talk with me explaining how missing out on class is actually effecting my education and all that instead of screaming at me and shouting at me.
ITS TEACHERS LIKE THIS THAT ACTUALLY HELP. I can't explain how greatful and thankful I am for them even if I told Laura I hate her the other day and still haven't apologised. I screamed at her and cried and she just said okay let's sit here for a bit and I not once apologised to her and she still emailed me today to make sure I was okay

Is not because the children are not at school that the school will be closed and there will be no expenses! Security, cleaning, renovations, admin, etc...

He made me a form teacher without even telling me, I got two A level groups, been grading A levels for the first time and checking the results of another course, I have to mentor a beginner teacher, additional programming class for a gifted student, after school science club who regulary attend a science competition, a science project which will be presented on a fair in our district capitol, language classes for some of our foreign students. Some things I choose freely, some I was preassured to do. All this while doing half of my classes for the first time and the other half bearly a second time. Our beginner teachers allways get the bigger share of additional work, but I am doing even more than the rest of the younger ones.
He just got really cross, telling me I should look around and "think for an instance how all the others are feeling, they were struggeling too and fyi, when he started he had to do 27 h week so I had no right to complain". Then he implied it was my own fault for doing so much, I should just quit something, like doing the field trip (the whole school does it and my class is really looking forward to it) or the science fair (where we signed a contract). On the other hand he keeps on giving me additional tasks. I do not get it. Then he implied I was not doing all this stuff for the kids anyway, but just to impress him - which is really mean and really not true.
You do all you are asked and even more and all you get told as a result is that it is not enough, that you fu**** it up anyway and that you should do more, while your professional motivation gets questioned. I wanted to be a teacher since the age of 12, I love my job and usually my principal is an awesome guy (I knew him when I was a student and he is still one of my heroes), but this hurts so frigging bad.
Long story short: Thank you for your podcast, it really helps to see our daily struggles taken with humour and to know that one is not alonecin feeling left alone.

I remember when they first started implementing online schooling in 2020 and my mom just called me in a panic because 2 weeks before school started they had just given her the training for the online platform the state decided to use and then wanted her to set up a virtual classroom, for 5 different classes all with different lesson plans, in those 2 weeks. So I went over to her house and helped her set up all her classes, got the lessons in order for her for the next 3 weeks, while also teaching her how to navigate this completely new website. Like I don’t think people understood how last minute some of those online classes were and how hard it was for older teachers to try and figure out how to use the technology they were barely trained to use. Some of those teachers don’t know how to set up a projector and you want them to make a whole online course? From basically scratch?

My center did not close. We stayed open throughout the pandemic and you would be surprised at how many children we had daily while the parents were at home. We closed 3 times in 2 years due to my teachers having COVID.. And when we had to close, most of the parents were livid and wanted the staff that was not sick to work. I had the hardest time explaining to the parents what the guidelines were.. It was so frustrating!!!

Speaking on sub plans. I had a class where all we did was watch movies and talk about the different cultural significance of them or in them. And the teacher said to the sub just play 25 minutes of this movie for each class. And the sub played 40minutes for one class and 32 minutes for another and just completely messed up what she thought was a very simple plan

Play 25 minutes of the video and then what else afterwards??? Do teachers really think students will respect substitutes at all? Please we don't even get paid half as much per day as teachers do, but expect us to follow a lesson plan that is like half way finished like that??? What are we suppose to do in the other hour and 10 minutes per class period??? You know when there is no lesson plans or half-0@$$ed lessons like that one the kids will start doing stupid stuff to keep themselves busy and is always something to cause chaos.

I was hoping all the talk of grace and social emotional health would have overflowed into how we treat each other the first year back but that’s not how it went. We never got to recover before it was “business as usual”, in addition with everyone coping continuing pandemic affects. This year felt just as hard as last. We lost one good teacher per grade and many of us are now planning exit plans for the next year or two. Two teachers had breakdowns and didn’t return after this year’s spring break.

28:33 Having a "mental health day" means stressing out to work twice as hard, because those sub plans need to be written, worksheets need to be copied, and everything laid out so the sub can find it. After the day off requires stressing out to to work twice as hard because now there is work to be graded and the following day to prepare for. It's easier just to suffer through a day of school than to attempt a vacation day.

Like I am not going to lie. This is some solid advice for anyone that is doing any type of social work. I am a caretaker for refugees in europe so you might be able to imagine what is going on here. And 2 months in I feel the burn out already happening. Tomorrow is my first day off since the crisis started.
Incase anyone is interested what my job became since the crisis started. Hold your horses cause I am not being paid enough. This ís a long one last bit is just a story time No need to read that if that is not interesting it is not about the work in of itself.
Because there is so much chaos, we do not have the resources to take care of all the people coming in. So caretakers are now substitute everything. Substitute therapist, governmentworkers, teachers (for children and adults) while being a janitor and cleaner. We also do catering.
And at the end of the day I get called racist by a white as person because the Syrians are being treated "so much better". Most syrian refugees are already fully integrated into european society. The crissis started in 2014 so they obviosly have more already set up. But in some cases due to the slow process and the amounts of people that came in, a few refugees were kinda left behind and are still waiting for a work visa or even a solid asylum status.
Most of the syrian refugees that are still going through the process live in something called refugee villages. Those are huge properties with doctors, therapists, schools and government bodies. They also tend to have a own apartment. To Ukraine refugees want to live in the refugee villages built for the syrian refugees. And because we are not kicking them out and leting Ukrainians in, they think we are being racist because we "treat syrians better than ukrainians". First of HELL NO Ukrainians are being treated miles better. They get nice food ffs. Syrians only got expired bread to eat when they lived in the same situation as they are doing now. Also the beds are so much better. I should know, I slept and ate in Syrian refugee camps and Ukrainian refugee camps.
We can't magically make appartments apear out of thin air. Most richer nations in europe ALL are going through a housing crisis to begin with.
This honestly frustrates the hell out of me because the caretakers are being blamed for the entire situation, while being blasted in newspapers with false abuse alligations (we only had one as of now).
Story time about the aligation from 2 weeks ago:
One of my facilities I worked at was "called out" for child endangerment, the truth is. A volunteer called the police because she found herself in the middle of a verbal argument (betweeen two adults no children were involved at all) and she didn't know what to do, and because she got scared she called the police (we have security on the premise but they must have really scared her, most volunteers are not used to confrontational situations. It can get very heated when the nerves are on edge).
The lady from the newspaper knew we had the police over because it was talked about on facebook. she came over to make a newspaper article about it, but we didn't talk to her and she wasn't let in. So she made up a story trying to explain why the police was called.
But she didn't think to maybe assume that the police, government and our staff already wrote reports on this and it has been legally accepted what happened that day. She was told by volunteers that there are official documents out afterwards and she said she knew she was corect because "she had her sources" her sources turned out to be other volunteers that didn't even work in the same district as the camp was in.
Side note, yeah great reliable sources you have there. Next time I want to know about my flu I will go to a vet instead of a human doctor. after all they are both doctors right?
Her news paper was charged for false allegations, because it is documented and we have no reports of any hurt child (we had the doctors [all volunteers too, but volunteers with medical degrees ^^] over every day for the children, trust me they would have noticed a nearly dead child). (yeah the abuse accusation was kinda graphic. I will not say it for that reason. But we are technically talking about a potentialy dead child, if it were true)
At the end of the story. F you lady from the Newspaper, you literally just got volunteers fired from their jobs and blacklisted (as volunteers) hope your sensational false news story that had to be taken down was worth the trust you broke between you and everyone that worked with you. Plus friendships. You are kinda lucky that nothing worse than that happened.

I’m an educator in ECE. When the pandemic happened we had to petition for our center to close for covid. We closed for 2 whole weeks and we were obligated to work from home, in order to get paid. And if we chose not to work , they used sick time , pto, etc to cover you without asking to supplement what your check was missing since you chose not to work. I essentially worked the entire pandemic. When we returned from the pandemic, I had 1 student for an entire MONTH.

I looked it up. The most relevant state was California with this option. If a teacher wishes to use more days than given in the year, they must, by state law, pay for their own substitute teacher. Going through college during a pandemic is tough. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for teachers to deal with online learning. That also mixes with the stress of the pandemic itself and the personal lives of the teachers.

I have totally done the whole, "it's easier just to go in" but not because of sub plans. It was because I was required to find several part timers to sub for me during my preschool day. I had bilateral pneumonia for over 4 weeks, ended up in the ER and was pregnant. It was terrible. Then the supervisor was all, " we can never tell if you are really sick or not because you call in sick and then you just come in anyway."

And since I was 20/21 at the time, I was often Tech Support for my mentor teachers(I had 4 of them to keep up with) and the older teachers. It was a year long residency as well! So exhausting. I ended up so burnt out and when I took a mental health break one of my mentors lectured me on it and told me I just need to "smile and be more bubbly" which spoiler alert. IT MADE IT SO MUCH WORSE. I would say that 2021 was easily the worst year of my life. I had to take like 4 months off of working to recover. Now I'm teaching virtually and looking for a permanent in person teaching job cause I Finally feel ready to enter a classroom again.
