  • Today I walkthrough, explain, test and review the Audient ID14 MKII. This is a USB-C bus powered audio interface which is expandable to 10 inputs via ADAT/SPDIF, with 2 amazing internal preamps and a great sounding instrument input. MKII improves the A/D conversion dynamic range by 5dB, and D/A conversions dynamic range by 9dB. The headphone is capable of driving even the HD650’s cleanly and it records up to 24-bit 96kHz.

I bought the ID14 first gen half A year ago and I am more than happy with it. The Motu was and still is bad available. The software is perhaps not to everyones liking, but with the additional 8 channels hard to beat. A beginning sound engineer can record everything with it, including a complete drumkit, if you have the additional channels.
Something else for the Audient and SSL and against the Motu, if it is on your desk I really like the controls on top and not on the front. The micports at the back instead of the front are also better with cable handling. The Audient is in between my monitor and keyboard.
As always, a nice review, thanks!

Coming from the iD4 MKI to the iD14 MKII and it has been an absolute pleasure to own, pre-amps are beyond clean and I love being able to have 2 mic inputs. I run my Lewitt LCT 440 Pure in channel 1 and my SM58 in channel 2. I turned my encoder button into a mute button for my Lewitt on channel 1, and then my SM58 has a on/off switch to mute itself physically as well. Being able to mute both my microphones quickly is a blessing bro. The guitar input is clean, and my DT770 80ohm headphones sound very clear. This is just an amazing interface, do not sleep on it. I use the Audient iD14 in my voiceover studio. I have used this with Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (250 ohm) and Sony MDR-7520 (24 ohm) headphones. Have to turn it all the way up to get an ok signal level w the DT770, making it problematic for fine editing, whereas there is plenty of headroom with the 7520 to make your ears bleed if you like that sort of thing. The low roll off at the lower impedance is an interesting issue but with spoken word, I have not encountered an issue, especially as the 7520s perform at 8-50k frequency response, so Sony said. (Alas, my favorite headphones ever can no longer be gotten.) HUGE CAVEAT to the iD14: the firmware is funky in working w Protools. There is a STATE file that you have to find in your library and trash on a regular basis because frequently, you'll open a session, or even continue a session and find you have NO headphone monitoring. The meters are moving in the DAW but no sound in the interface. Super painful because the fix is trashing the STATE file, then pulling the plugs on the id14, rebooting the Mac, and plugging the iD14 back in. But the good news is usually you only have to do that once per occurrence. Usually. Sometimes it takes two restarts, which is really a serious loss of time and a major annoyance. That is what has cooled my jets on recommending the iD14 any more. Audient is at a loss to explain the problem and because it comes from the UK, the whole servicing methodology and time frame was too much of a pain to do (I'd have to buy an equal backup interface to keep working, and why do I want to do that?) that I continue to live with the issue.

Thanks a lot for all these videos.
One things I hadn't crossed my mind and that came out in some comment is that many Audio Interfaces do not seem to have latency free direct monitoring via the TRS outs. They have direct monitoring only via the headphone jack. Can you perhaps touch upon that in your reviews? I might want to use the AI as a mixer when jamming with a couple friends instead of purchasing another device and in this case having this monitor out directly to the speaker monitors would be nice to have and latency free.

Happy to see the MKII iD4 and iD14 updated to current tech. I prefer analog knobs and better build quality over EVO4. Also should keep sound advantage over Focusrites.
Manual volume, gain, and mix monitor knobs are very handy. MKII improves on the weak spots of iD4 first gen a little more gain and better headphone output. Expect high ohm headphones to sound better on the MKII.
I prefer mix knob on iD4 vs. software but would also like separate control of speaker and headphones and ability to bypass ampand use a channel strip like iD44. Increased gain is nice too using with Rode Procaster at 85 or 90 percent gain I can hit -6 to -8 db if I'm on top of the mic. With a fethead I got down to 55-60 percent gain and have more room to adjust gain. Above 85-90 percent gain it sounds terrible. 76 db gain RME babyface is in another league but also 3x the cost.

Hi thanks for great video. I have two questions. First: Did you connect the el.guitar to the Di input or to the back line input? When I turn on my Gibson Explorer with passive magnets, the signal clips even when the input gain is turned off. Second: Does Daw report to you that the signal is passing even when your input gain is at zero (turn off)? When I connect the mic At4050 and Bass Guitar with passive magnets, the signal passes up to -24dbFS in DAW and on LED meters.

How would you stack this up against the Yamaha AG06? Also how does the dac quality compare?? Just want to be able to have an xlr mic input for my pc to use as a regular mic for gaming and powerful enough to drive the DT 990 pros. BUT I also want a quality dac for a decent hifi speaker listening experience.

    I have two important questions:
    1. Is it possible to connect my tv over the optical input with this interface and have the sound of the tv and my pc playing on my headphones simultaneously?
    2. Does the interface work with pc off, just with the remainig usb-power delivery, so that i can watch tv with my speakers/headphones but without needing to power on the pc?
Maybe someone could give me answers to this.

can anyone answer this problem i have with the Audient ID14 MKII Audio Interface ? I find that the gain on the microphone is about a quarter of what I get on my previous interface. I have to have the mic full volume to just about be heard. I've tried it on 2 different computers with 2 different microphones and is the same. I am using good quality lavalier Tram mic. I spoke to audient about this and they said that the unit was faulty and to send it back. So I did that I've got a new unit and have exactly the same problem, there is nearly no gain/volume on the microphone. Any ideas any solutions any comparisons I would love to know about. If it is true this is a huge and stupid drawback to this unit. The other interface I have which I get plenty of volume on the Mic is a Rubix 22.
