There are about 5 or 6 documentaries that I keep coming back to watch. This is one of them. I wish I could buy it on DVD.

The German guy was a real phone-hogger! Also, it's crazy that the class 91 Electra's shown in this video are now being retired from service, they still look as good and modern as they do in this video.

I believe they’re delaying the retirement a bit longer, and they have even repainted many of them with a new livery.

AWSOME documentary. Very interesting seeing things from back in the day. I can understand why my dad liked going first class now.

MCMXCI = 1991 WOW 😳 I was a wee boy back then, this documentary is 30 years old and those 225 trains were brand new, still running strong on the London-Leeds route.

"wrong type of snow" what a PR misnomer / disaster : they should have just said a type of light snow which was unexpected and was drawn into traction motor blower ducts!

Bomb scares at Peterborough. I was caught up in so many. All piling out by the Great Northern Hotel because someone had left a Waitrose carrier bag on platform 5.

Fascinating documentary - this and the previous video. Great to see what Intercity was like. I travelled on GNER before it became East Coast, which i've travelled on twice now. Liked the uniforms the staff wore! Thanks for uploading. Most enjoyable. Craig

During the latter years of the nationalised BR, I got the impression they got to grips with the commercial side of things. Privatisation didn't quite make things work.

This is one of my favourite documentaries of all time. At an important transition time for the railway as it was beginning to be prepared for privatisation. Underlying tensions of new management styles meeting old proud industry.
Love the music at 8 mins in on this. Anyone know what it is?

The old hands in this documentary might look/sound like moaning pessimists, but 30 years down the line and a lot of what they talked about hasn't been far wrong, they knew what was coming and knew the future of the railways in the UK was going to be bleek.

@@harveyjames9600Where do you want to start? Currently going through a strike for one on working conditions etc etc. The service is appalling compared to their day. People complained about BR but look what they’ve got now. Trying to get anywhere on a Saturday evening long distance, the service shuts down way too early. Overnight travel is poor compared to what it used to be to be, hardly any sleeper trains left, the railways have gone backwards with millions more people in the country and less carriages on services. Look at the state of Trans pennine and Northern. Years ago a Norwich-Birmingham train would have been six carriages and supplementary additional services to cope with holidays & peak demand, now just two carriages with more people travelling. The Norwich-Liverpool service the same, two carriages out of Norwich. Years ago would have been way longer in BR days.

People would learn a thing or two if the majority of these people were still about now, proper railwayman the likes you won’t ever see again. George Melia knew his stuff and wasn’t wrong. Glad i had the pleasure to work with the man.

Its great this is on here but its missing the first half of the program when Roy Bluck joins the first train. But it is fascinating to watch it now after 20 odd years and hearing what they say. You can clearly see how unsympathetic government funding was already sending it to the dogs and the public and staff could see the doom coming. The time to act as regards HS2 and more should have been maybe about 10 years before this but instead the ship was sinking rapidly by the time this was made.
