  • "Danger" and "Feast On My Heart" performed live by Pylon, circa 1981 at Hitsville in Passaic, New Jersey. This originally aired on a New Jersey based cable TV show, which I think was called "Cable Rock". (If anyone remembers this show, let me know and I'll add it to the description.) In memory of Randy Bewley.

    Probably the most underrated rated band in the history of underrated bands.

    I lived in GA '87-'91 which was basically the tail end of the Athens heyday. As I recall, basically every Athens band at the time regarded Pylon as the best. So true. RIP Randy Bewley.

      REM mentioned that when they were inducted to the R&R Hall of Fame. They thought PYLON was the best Athens band.

    Pylon would sell out Friday and Saturday nights at the 688 Club in Atlanta during 1982 and 1983...it was the show of year. The club was packed, and everyone was completely in awe.

    I had the good fortune of attending UGA in Athens 75-80 and saw many a Pylon show, not long after they started playing live. You could see them for $1-$2 range, dollar pitchers of beer, those were the days!!! Even if you didn't know how, you had to dance to Pylon! I still have my 7" and 12" Pylon vinyl, may have to spin it after seeing this....

    I remember back in the 80s hearing about Pylon, probably because of REM. I wanted to hear them, but I had no money and there was no good record store in town anyway, and no amazon, and I didn't know anybody who had any of their records, so I never heard their music. Then I stopped caring about REM, and forgot all about Pylon for decades. Today the band somehow randomly popped into my head, and now there's youtube, so after all these years I can finally hear them. Worth the wait!
    Does the super-easy availability of all music to anybody with an internet connection make people value music less? I suspect it does.

    I have their albums. It is why I will never not have a record player. Although I lived in Athens in the early '80s, I first heard Pylon years later in a documentary about Athens' music. I immediately searched for and bought their albums. That took a lot of phone calls to make it happen.

    They need a whole show from 1983 or earlier in decent quality to put out on DVD to show the kids what it was about. Maybe make this a bonus clip on it. As with the B's and R.E.M., the early stuff has a certain unsurpassed vitality to it.

    Don't know about the Joy Division comparison. Other than the fact the bass gets co-star billing, definitely not hearing any similarity. DEVO is more like it; actually, like the love child of DEVO and B52s.

    • @rstvmo
      @rstvmo Před 6 lety +4

      doesn't have to be for a soundcheck to play for the cameras; perhaps the company simply requested filming the band without audience distraction, more space & room for crew, multi cameras etc.
