In this video I show you from start to finish how to make a Frame Bag. I'd recommend a notepad for the first section, then it's worth watching on 1.5x speed due to the length.
You'll need a piece of fabric 40cm tall by your specified length for the body, a length of fabric 8cm wide to use as the spine of the bag, a zip slightly longer than your bags final length, a zip pull, 5 pieces of 50mm wide Velcro 11cm long and 1 piece of 25mm wide Velcro 8cm long.
For information about where to get fabric/webbing/zips from see my first video:- • Choosing a Sewing Mach...

IMO, you don't have enough like on this video ! Thank you so much to show us the full process!
This channel is amazing! Hope it grows!
Excellent video! I managed to make one for my bike. fun project!
Awesome video mate! I'm making a set of bags for my bike and I've learned a lot from you, so thank you for taking the time to do this video.
Fantastic, thanks for making these vids! Been waiting for this one.
You're welcome!
You are a very generous person. Thanks for sharing this with us and great idea with the van. Love it 👍
Sue O'Brien thank you!
Thanks for another video! Any chance of you doing a video of that roll top you mentioned in this video? Thx again!
Greatly informative video, thanks! I will be doing a full frame bag for myself shortly when I'll get my hands on a sewing machine.
On the future plans: love the idea! I'm in my van, which I converted back in the UK, and I'm watching this video from Argentina parked at a lovely place by a river. I'm cheering you on on it!
Cheers, J.
Thanks for the comment and well wishes! If you have any questions when you get round to making your bag feel free to get in touch via my website. I'd definitely rather be by a river in Argentina than locked down in the UK but hey, all in good time!
Thank you for the videos! I’ve been binging them. I’ve made a couple bar bags so far as per your instructions and am very pleased with the results. Top notch! Very inspiring, thank you for taking the time.😀
You’re welcome! Nice to see another MacKinnon making bags 👍
Bravo!!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
To mark the fabric, you can also use artist's color pencils. No plastic to dispose of.
Really appreciate your series of videos. Ordered fabric and supplies today to do matching frame and bar bags snd a tool roll. Would you consider doing a feed bag video? Thanks!
I made a couple of stem bags yesterday and thought it would make for a good video, so potentially yes!
Cool! Thanks John!! I’ll send pics of my bags once I finish. I appreciate the inspiration and shared knowledge. All the best in your 2021 endeavors!
Very nice. The first video link in the description is broken.
Good spot, both the links are fixed. Thanks!
Late to this video! 'been struggling with a rear rack for long enough, time for a frame bag!! Is there any advantage to lining the bag and if so what sort of material would you reccommend? would adding removable dividers make lining more tricky? Thanks so much for taking the time to do this tutorial and also thanks for answering everyone's questions. You rule!!! Subscribed :)
Hey George, I think lining a bag is a personal choice, it could aid with water resistance depending on the material used, I think most people use something like ripstop nylon but you could also go with another layer of cordura, or VX21. With removable dividers you just have to plan their location in advance, lining the bag would potentially make for a “tidier” look on the outside if you were to sew the Velcro onto the liner only then the stitching wouldn’t be visible on the exterior of the bag. Hopefully that all makes sense, any more questions feel free to ask, and thanks for the kind words!
Was always curious how these bags were made, thanks for showing. Knowing nothing about sewing, what kind of sewing machine would you recommend for getting started and making a bag like this?
Kevin Koltz hey Kevin, thanks for checking out the channel! I’ve actually got a whole video on that subject, you can find it here czcams.com/video/zFmRAQkzt3o/video.html
Hey John, loved watching these videos, I’m definitely going to give a few things a go. I’ve got 2 questions for you if you’d be so kind:
1. Are you going to do a video on a top tube bag? I really want to make one of these.
2. Are you going to sell the patterns? Would be good to be able to contribute back to you.
Glad to hear the videos have inspired you to give it a go! I could do a video on the top tube bag, I'll try get it done in the next couple of weeks., and I have made a few patterns but not sure what to charge for them, I'll do some research and put a post up on my instagram asap.
Mack Workshop that’d be brilliant!
Excellent channel. This has been the perfect resource to get started making bags. Quick question though, do you use the hook loop straight off the roll as it is or is it better to stitch it onto nylon webbing of the same width and stitch the webbing onto the bag? Also, probably a question for a video in its own right but how do you make frame bags with an internal divide?
Straight off the roll here, I’ve found no benefit in stiffening it with webbing. I have always done frame bags with removable dividers, for those I stitch loop (fluffy) Velcro to the inside of the bag and then make a panel the width of the bag with hook Velcro tabs so I can pull it in and out as needed.
@@MackWorkshop Ahhh that makes sense. It sounds quite simple then. Thanks for the quick reply.
I've got another question for you on zips. If I break a panel for a zip (or 2 if doing a shelf), how much do you lose after taking into account the 2 folds on the stitch either side of the zip. The zip itself adds lenght back in though, does it all cancel out or do i need to add zip allowance as well as a seam allowance?
@@cjprimrose if I remember rightly you need to add about 5mm per zip if you’re not doing a storm flap, and 70mm (per zip) if you are.
@@MackWorkshop Perfect, thanks for that. Keep up the good work. This channel is great!
hey there, did you install that binder attachment or did it come with the machine? looking for one and seeing either cheesy amazon stuff or expensive sailrite...
I bought it, it’s a Suisei A4S in 25mm
What binding do you recommend for most applications? I haven't been able to find you mentioning it specifically in any of your videos. Thanks
I use lightweight nylon binding from Attwoolls:- www.attwoollsmanufacturing.co.uk/25mm-wide-nylon-webbing/
@@MackWorkshop thanks!
hi, guys, estoy empezando aprender a usar las maqunas, quiero empezar hacer mis propias bolsos de bikepacking. alguien que me comparta links para hacer los patrones tutoriales saludos...
I do have a few questions if you could indulge me please.. What gauge needle do you use? What Weight thread/type do you use and the edging/grosgrain, is it 25mm/1"? Many thanks.
I’m not too fussy with needles, I think it’s a 110. I use V69 thread, and yes it’s 25mm edging 👍
@@MackWorkshop Thanks very much for answering those q's and apologies for not checking your other video first, that explains those. D'oh.
do you use polypropylene or nylon webbing? cheers!
I use Polyester webbing, and nylon edging.
whats your opinion on hook and loop longevity?
I've yet to have any issues with it, although I do know over time it can stop working as well. However, it's fairly easy to replace without having to take the entire bag apart, so if it did lose it's "stickiness" so to speak, I know it would be an easy fix.
