On snowy days when my daughter Brodie was little I used to make potato soup and cinnamon rolls from scratch. Brodie and her Daddy would be outside shoveling the walks and clearing off the cars while I was busy in the kitchen. Nice memories.

@yerb 1970s. My parents were part of the back to the earth movement. It was great. They bought a small acreage with a really old house, fixed it up, didn't mind that it didn't have heat or plumbing, shopped auction sales and we grew up on homegrown, home-made everything. It really was glorious.

I live in a 120 yr old cottage here in New Zealand, and while I have a modern stove - I use the original wood stove all winter. There's always a pot of soup bubbling, plus it heats the hot water and saves on the power bill. The old wood stoves are much sought after here.

My grandmother used to make something similar, but she kept the diced veg chunky and added pearl barley to thicken it. I make it myself nowadays; it keeps a few days in the pan on the stove, and actually gets better during that time; just keep ladling out a bowlful and reheat it in the microwave. My dog also loved the dregs from the pot poured over his kibbles.

I'm astonished by how rapidly the frozen pea ball-bearings softened and cooked through in that non-simmering soup. I don't feel confident about replicating that part of the recipe myself because every time I cook with peas they take just that little bit longer than I imagined they would. So I think I'd add peas that had been pre-boiled for a little bit. If that sounds like it would work out, then this dish looks so delicious that I could see myself having two bowls over the course of a winter afternoon-- yum!

Our local Whole foods market, just blocks from home, has closed their "soup bar", and I'm not starving so I'm not down to canned soups yet (PLEASE GOD NEVER!!). I found this Veggie soup so darned easy, and it was wonderful. I love that you can exchange veggies for what you can get right now, and it all seems to work out find. I put a drop of creme fresh and sprinkle parsley on top, the family can't believe I'm cooking these soups myself. So glad I found this cooking site, because if I can do this, honestly ANYONE can. I look forward to viewing many other videos and get crackin' feeding the family.

Been holding onto this recipe for 3 years, then FINALLY made it for the family a month ago...and I have been making this weekly since!! While I had to make a few adjustments((non-dairy, so just added more plant butter, no parsnips at local stores, so replaced with Korean turnip)) and it is just sooo soooo good!! I need to make your bread recipe, but I have paired the soup with a no knead, artisan bread, and roasted chicken ...and 💋👌
Just...thank you ❤. This soup is literally the embodiment of a warm hug!!

Another example of veggie food that's tasty, hearty and nutritious that you don't have to be a veggie to love. I do one very similar but with garlic, some Indian spices and red lentils instead of peas. Spicy and warming that no-one, not even meat eaters like me, pull a face at.

I scrub my veg but I don't peel them. However, those peelings could make your veg stock! Since you blend everything anyway, if I did peel the veg and make stock with peelings, I'd finely mince the peels afterward and add them.into the soup. I am just gonna guess that frugality would require "no waste." But ye dinna tell us what was in the veg stock, ehether bought or homemade. But dammit, man, show the lusting world that brown bread, likely slathered with the world's best butter and just as likely all washed down with a pint or two of a red ale or brown stout. I'll be making it soon and thanking ye the whole time, or me name ain't Patrick James Edward O'_______ .
    Slainte!!
