Dotted around London are these little green huts. They are actually cabman shelters designed so that Taxi drivers (and hansome cab drivers in the old days) could have somewhere to go and rest and have some reasonably priced refreshments.
Cabman shelters are now listed buildings and you can still buy snacks at them but you are only allowed inside if you are a taxi driver.
In this London Guide, Joolz discovers some curious stories about these shelters and talks to some taxi drivers about why having The Knowledge is important. One company even tried to knock a cabman's shelter down in order to build a hotel but they were faced with sterner opposition than they expected.

I remember the Cabmen shelters fondly.
    Didn’t know, that much.
    Thanks for sharing!
This needs to be looked at more!

Hi Joolz, I stumbled across your channel a few months ago, and just wanted to say how Brilliant they are. This episode is especially close to my heart as I used to be a London cabbie. I got my Bill and Badge in 1972 badge #18754 lost that and got #21191. I moved to the States in the mid 70s and only returned to London for family visits. From Stamford Hill to L.A via NYC. Keep up the great work Cheers Murray

That witty cab driver apparently has the best kind of British humour!

Typical London cabbie humour - unfortunately being lost thanks to Uber and the rest......

There's three of those huts in Well Hall Rd in Eltham near me. They were to do with the trams of the time. They are nice, I would like to see them used again.

Agreed, as I've just had one - when I ordered at the hatch, I said: "The cabbie over there recommended a full breakfast"......the reply came back: "Well, they've all eaten plenty of 'em mate!"

Why on earth would anyone use Uber or the rest?.....When you can travel with the world's best trained cabbies - usually with lovely humour too - for a few pence more!

I paid for a meal in a shelter then sneaked out without eating it.

As one who drove a taxi in and around New York City for about twenty-five years , I can certainly appreciate the knowledge , patience and skill my British Counterparts have , I'm only afraid the cabman shelters will be replaced with mosque and minarets , my God what has the people of England done to themselves .

Dear God... I love how you started by commending their knowledge, and ended by blurting out your lack of it.
