  • #Barnsbury is a beautiful part of London and in this walk Joolz takes you to the place Bob Marley had the famous photo taken for the cover of the Legend album. Also, Pentonville Prison which incarcerated many famous people.
    Beautiful squares and the grave of the greatest clown of all time, Grimaldi.
    A one kilometre tunnel with no towpath along the Regents Canal which takes you from London to Liverpool and the original cricket pitch where Thomas Lord played cricket before moving to Lord's cricket ground.

    The whole “walking” a boat thru a tunnel thing is where the term “legging it” came from.

    My old stomping ground.
    I used to live in Milner Square. Stephen Fry lived around the corner and used to park his black cab outside his house. I was collecting jumble for a local charity one afternoon, I knocked on his door and he kindly gave me a Levis Red Tab demin jacket hanging in the hall. We auctioned it for £150.

    • @maryannebrown2385
      @maryannebrown2385 Před 4 lety

      I have always wondered about that word “jumble”. How did it come to mean items for a charity sale? Here in America the word is still used but we have totally lost connection with the origin. If something is a “jumble sale”, you just know it is second hand items with the proceeds meant for a charitable organization. We never use that word otherwise-for example, you said you were collecting jumble for a charity sale. We would say we were collecting donations (or donated items) for a jumble sale.

    • @Useaname
      @Useaname Před 4 lety +1

      @@maryannebrown2385 its just one of those words that has grown to mean different things on either side of the pond.
      I guess collecting jumble, then selling said jumble just became "jumble sale". Although here people tend to use the word "jumble" less and less, when advertising a second hand goods sale for charity. They either use "pre-loved", or "second hand".

      Stephen is a great person! I loved the documentary series he did taking his London Cab all around the US. One of the big hotels in my city has a London Cab which they use to pick up people from the airport. The primary driver showed me the cab when a group I belong to had an event at the hotel. I'm in the US midwest and I don't think most people here would know the charitable aspect of a jumble.

    • @maryannebrown2385
      @maryannebrown2385 Před 4 lety

      Gene Miller Really? I am also in the US Midwest (Chicago), and when I was little churches or other groups used to advertise they were holding a “jumble sale”. It didn’t mean jumble in the sense that everything was a disorganized mess, but that they were donated items to be sold for a program at the church or a charity. I have seen that that phrase has really pretty much fallen into disuse. I am in my mid 50’s, and I remember it from when I was little, but have not seen it used for many years.

      @@maryannebrown2385 Hi! I'm in my 60s and grew up in NW Iowa. Never heard of jumble as a sale or for a charitable event until I was like in my 20s. I had family in Minnesota, and they had Used a bit shops where we called them Thrift shops. Lots of differences even regionally!

Avoid the showers at all costs B wing has a north easterly exposure over looking the Caledonian road excellent shops but sadly on release I got a funny look when I asked for a Daily Telegraph and was told "not round here mate" and the staff were so nice they let me keep the grey track suit and blue boxers and its that personal touch that makes nick in the smoke so much better than anywhere in the U.K.......Great film again Mr G.
