[ASMR] Where Do Barber Poles Come From? 70+ Years of Iconic Traditional Craft At William Marvy Co.

- Relax to the sounds of a craftsman assembling an iconic American-made Marvy Barber Pole! 💈
This video is something experimental we filmed earlier this year during our time in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The handcraftsmanship of a Marvy Barber Pole being assembled in their Saint Paul workspace where they have been based since 1961.
Inside, the warehouse space has barely changed since the day they first set up their workbenches!
Established in 1936, by William Marvy in his parents’ basement, the William Marvy Company in Saint Paul, Minnesota is a family-owned and operated business that produces the iconic Marvy Barber Pole, Mar-V-Cide Disinfectant and Sanitizing Jars.
The William Marvy Company began making barber poles in 1950. William Marvy revolutionized the barber pole with a rust-proof design utilizing stainless steel, aluminum, and glass. They are the only manufacturers of commercial barber poles left in North America. Over the years they have made 90,000+ barber poles, and a book catalogs each barber pole’s serial number along with its new owner ✍🏼
Two of their barber poles are at The Smithsonian, including the 75,000th pole, as symbols of Americana and the American Highstreet. A recent milestone, the 90,000th barber pole now hangs on the wall in the Marvy headquarters as a part of their growing collection that includes past barber pole milestones and historical designs 🙌🏼
William Marvy’s son, Bob Marvy, is now the company President. Bob's three sons (Scott, Dan & Brad) are involved in the daily operations to preserve and honor the Marvy family legacy.
We filmed over two days with Scott Gohr who has four decades of experience and is an invaluable part of this family business. Scott patiently took us through the process of assembling a Marvy Barber Pole model #55.
And, in case you are wondering, this barber pole was made for Mizell’s Barber Shop in Brownsburg, IN. So if you are ever in the neighborhood, you can stop by and check out their Marvy Barber Pole!
✨ Huge thank you to Patrick Imholte, owner of Elizabeth’s Barber Shop, for connecting us with Scott Marvy 🙏🏼 The William Mary Company is around the corner from Elizabeth’s Barber Shop. You’ll often find Patrick there catching up with Scott and buying supplies :)

Scott is incredibly humble, the amount of knowledge he has on all things barber poles and barber antiques is incredible ! Has made more barber poles by hand than arguably any living person ! So cool to see him on this platform for the world to see ! The level of respect he has for the craft is unmatched ! Thank you for presenting this to the world Harry ! Safe travels ❤!
Thanks Patrick for all your help behind the scenes and for introducing us to the rich history of the William Marvy Company 🙏🏼❤️ It was awesome to have the opportunity to film with Scott - we enjoyed our time with him and the Marvy family!
Scott is a legend! Been a lifetime of fun hanging with my hero. Love ya dad!
Your dad is awesome! We had so much fun filming with him!
Your dad is a true craftsman. I am glad you notice that and appreciate him. I bet that means more to him than the air he breaths.
This video on another higher level than we are even used to seeing ob this high level channel. The classic barber pole done by the classic artist. Absolute brilliance. The cinematography should get an award.
I agree, i love this style.
Too many out-of-focus issues to warrant an award.
My God that was an ASMR masterpiece. I would really like more like this.
Great to hear you liked the new video! Hopefully, in the future we will be able to do a few more videos such as this.
Hi - thanks so much for watching! Huge thank you to the Marvy family and Scott Gohr for having us over and allowing us to film the making of an iconic Marvy Barber Pole 🙏🏼 In case you are wondering, this barber pole was made for Mizell’s Barber Shop in Brownsburg, IN 💈🙌🏼
Brilliant. What gave you the idea to film this? It was such a treat to watch an old school craftsman at work.
Absolutely amazing work done by this man. Thank you from an Australian viewer❤.
Hello Harry
Thanks for your reply regarding the Barber Pole - it was a lovely surprise to hear from you.😽
Harry has hit this one out of the park by capturing the pure nature of a piece of barbering history. I could a see this becoming a series for sure: How barber chairs are made, How razors are made, What barber college is like, etc.
I feel like we should’ve had to pay to watch this….Needs an award.
Thank you for you kind words 🙏🏼. We are so glad you enjoyed it.
ASMR hall of fame 🏆 This is art.
I could watch him work all day! This was such a treat. This type of craftmanship is something to be cherished in our world today.
Harry, you're an absolute genius for this video. Experimental? More like you know exactly what you're doing. Amazing editing, perfect sound, great video and camera holding. This is an awesome video! One of your best videos, ever
This video is a true breath of fresh air, watching a real craftsman at work is a real pleasure. Thank you.
I love the the look and sounds of this old craft shop. If this is the only one remaining in North America, it makes me wonder if you could do similar videos of barber pole craft shops around the world. 💈

Watching this episode is so relaxing and The Cinemagraphy of the Video Looks so Great - Thank you Harry for this great Video
Thank you for watching & commenting 🙏🏼 It’s awesome to hear you liked the new video and found it relaxing!
Just ordered the book, VANISHING American Barber Shop 1860 to 1960. looking forward to reading it.
Wow, what a cool video. Thank you very much. Never thought about where Barbara poles come from and he’s left-handed.👍
Harry showing he is more than a dude that just sits there to get pampered. Also I am sure Mystery Woman played a use role in this as usual. Really such great work, and I don't think I need to even comment on what a legend Willaim and his family are.
Merry Christmas Harry ❤️
Wishing you a Merry Christmas too!! Can’t believe it’s almost here!
Standing ovation, mass applause & very much respect to William Marvy & the entire Marvy family for their legacy to carry on & for paving the way for the World of Tonsorial Barbers by Trade. Thank you! Thank you Harry! Much love & respect🙏🏻💈👑
This might be your best video so far. The idea is so simple but still completely original, fantastic, next level UASMR! And thank you for not including music, got worried there when he turned on the radio.
Take, that! “How it’s Made”
Absolutely fantastic 👏👏
Amazing craftsman and you can see he really takes care with his work
Thanks a lot for sharing the magical moment of creation in the workshop museum
Greetings to Harry and all your team form México. !!
Oh wow. I liked this a lot. Sound& filming is just grand! Appreciated this vid a lot. Regards from Germany
This video is so well filmed, paced, cut and post produced . Technically your best work so far. You should do a piece about all your filming equipment. And what programs you use?
What an awesome video! Thank you Scott and Harry for doing this. I love how the craftsmanship is shown with the care and respect of a very skilled individual. Thanks again to both of you!
What a marvellous video to watch. Love this Harry! What a beautiful craft to have learnt. I think you need to do more barber related paraphernalia videos as well!!❤❤❤❤
The wonderful paraphernalia associated with traditional, ‘old - time ‘ barbershops 💈 is truly mesmerizing. I’m reminded of some of the incredible chairs I used to see in the barbershops of rural Tasmanian villages & towns,..some of which had seen m a n y decades of continual service. Including some Showground-looking pieces to appeal to the kiddies 😊😊😊..
Coolest job ever
So uniquely cool to watch.
Thanks, we are glad you enjoyed this one. We really enjoyed documenting this little piece of Americana! 🙏🏼
Just truly a master at his craft ☺️I appreciate you harry and the crew for all the great memories that you show us 🖤
I would love more videos like this, or you sitting down with a barber talking about their craft and such (Pat from Elizabeth's would be awesome of course to start with)
Absolutelly stunning.
Absolute class best video on youtube
True Craftsman Ship 👌🏻 👏🏻
Totally fascinating !!
This was a really nice Christmas surprise Harry & Mysterious woman. I really enjoy learning about the smaller/niche things in life. Not all crafting is a spectacle but that doesn’t change the dedication people put into learning their craft. Keep up the good content! Merry Christmas🎄
Fantastic!
Amazing work on all levels. Please please please more like this!
Very interesting to see how all of the different pieces come together!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas too and all the best for 2024!! 🎉
Okay this was just cool to watch. Great ASMR and very interesting.
It is not the typical video that you are used to and, you know what? I loved it. It is a very good idea to make these videos on how objects related to the world of barbering are made. The next one could be about barber chairs (it's an idea)
Yes!!! We don't feel so good in the house this week and this video will help me get the much-needed rest I crave. Thank you @HairCutHarry
Hi - hope you guys feels better soon!
I'd love to see more video like that !! 🤩😍

Wow Harry. Nice to see that your in Minnesota again. Nice video by the way! Be safe. Roads get sleek and slippery here around this time and especially in January. Merry Christmas and God bless! 😊
This was filmed earlier in the year, presumably during that initial visit. It’s in the description 👍
Top video of the ARTIGIANS
I'm only a few into this one and already can tell I'm going to enjoy it immensely. What a nice surprise.

We are happy to hear you liked this! It was so interesting to us too to learn about this piece of history 💈🙌🏼 We first heard about The William Marvy Company from Patrick (owner of Elizabeth’s Barbershop) last year so it was awesome to have the opportunity to film there this year.

Nice video. One about the making of straight razors would be nice too.
My two year old and I thoroughly enjoyed this, Harry! We love videos on how things are made 😁 I would love to see more of these videos!
That’s awesome you both enjoyed this video! Hopefully, we'll be able to do more like this in the future :)
Great job, just saw what looks like this company’s barber pole in the Osaka Japan barber video. It will be interesting to try and see them in other old videos now.
It’s so cool, isn’t it?! Dora at Barber88 has a Marvy barber pole 💈🙌🏼
First....for a change😮
Something different this way comes. Great Asmr of course Harry. Filmed superbly, worthy of any How its Made episode.
😅😂 sorry, I'm first coment on the sight as well as 👍🏽....but hey, merry Christmas! 🎅
CZcams all that matters but hey, you'll get there. Happy Holidays@WWG1WGALL
@Badonicus - we are so happy you enjoyed this!
Always wondered about these poles :) so thank you for showing this. I see this becoming part of HaircutHarry, as interesting information/history of the trade. On average the will have made 1300 a year, I wonder how the keep afloat, as that doesn´t seem like a massive production...?
Wow. I really enjoyed watching this. Outstanding soothing content
What a special video! A true craftsman! I wonder how many he has made over the years.
