The movie Crystal was thinking about is called: "Self Reliance" with Anna Kendrick... it was entertaining for sure.

  • @clussylove

The movie Crystal was thinking about is called Self Reliance starring Jake Johnson and Anna Kendrick where they get chosen for a game where they get hunted that's broadcast on the dark web and if they survive 30 days they win. One of the rules is if they are with someone they can't get killed. Seems like the premise of a thriller but it's a dark comedy about having a midlife crisis.

I read something about the Tall Guy, not totally sure if it's true but I like to think it is:
When they were on location early in production, the Casting Director went for lunch with an old friend of hers that lived in the area. She mentioned to her friend that the script calls for a really tall guy, and she's struggling to find someone to cast in the role, and her friend says "Oh, have you not met the Lanier Twins yet?" Turns out there was a pair of twin brothers local to the area that were both 7'7", and one of them was interested in trying his hand at acting.
Sadly, and Tony mentioned it offhand, Mike Lanier - the brother cast in the film - passed away in 2018 from cancer.

1:13:50 If you “bubble-boy’ed” yourself and sealed yourself in a bunker or a vault, how would you get food and water? It would be a little hard (and expensive) to stock a bunker up with food and water with It constantly following you, so unless you just found one already stocked or figured out a way to safely get food and water brought to you, things would get pretty rough when one of them ran out. But it would keep you alive for a while at least.

I thought the movie was pretty good... until the swimming pool confrontation towards the end. It lost all dredd and suspense, it fell into the "showing too much of the monster" trap. It just went silly. We watched it in the cinema, any other movie that dropped the ball towards the end. So many movies do this. Also, what was up with the shell clam phone thing one of the characters has... the sequel needs to answer some of these things. That phone thing was annoying me throughout the movie just wondering what it was. But yeah, the movie does have some great scares. The part mentioned about the tall guy appearing out of the dark and walking straight into the room was perfect. I would say that was a perfect example of how to do a jump scare.

I will say on the question of how you'd learn to be at peace, I'd have the person who gave it to me give me their phone number, the same goes for the person I gave it to. I'd call or text the person I gave it to daily. As long as they responded, I'd know we're good.
If they stopped responding, I'd call the person who gave me it and start updating them. Then you just keep those instructions going through the chain of people. Once the person you gave it to gives it to someone else, you don't have to worry about contacting them unless the person they gave it to dies.

Fun fact: celibacy is not the same as chastity. Celibacy is abstinence from marriage, and chastity is abstinence from sexual intercourse. People got it all twisted over time and confused the terms to mean the same thing, but it's like confusing the colour blue with green. That's why the term "incel" is inherently wrong: "involuntarily celibate" means you are trying to get married, but, darn it, you just can't seem to get hitched! The term should actually be "inchaste", meaning that you want to have sexual intercourse, but can't, and all the implications of frustration that come with it.

This is one of my favorite movies. It's brilliant. You don't need interpretations to enjoy. Nevertheless, here's my crazy explanation that you're gonna hate.
This builds on the notion that this is in the genre of 'cosmic horror'.
The 'demon' is some kind of alien machine with an unknown purpose. The technology is so alien that we're incapable of understanding it. Think of it as an AI as they currently work. They hallucinate, they come up with weird approaches to solutions, and we can't always understand how it does things. Sometimes they just get answers wrong, and the result is odd and alien to us. That's why it takes on odd and creepy personas. It doesn't always get it right. And somtimes its actions are confusing and seemingly arbitrary. That's why the naked guy is standing on the roof and just observes. It makes no sense from our perspective, but that's because its cognitive processing is akin to an AI's.
Also notice how machine-like it walks and approaches its victims. Think 'terminator'-esque. It never stops. It never wavers. It's in constant motion. It's a machine.
Why is it doing what it's doing? No idea. Maybe it's some kind of alien experimentation? Maybe it's a machine designed to investigate our psychology? Which is why it seems to fuck with its victims at times. Or maybe it is trying to 'mate' with its victims to obtain some kind of knowledge about us. Again - I don't know. But it's fun to think about the movie this way.

I had an interesting idea about how maybe a way to get the demon to skip you is hy having sex with the intent of having a child and doing it successfully. Like if you get pregnant or get someone pregnant that it skips you, then it just goes to the person who originally infected you. That could also play into the whole thing about stigma around sex and hot it goes away when you intentionally have a child, how like its normal for couple to announce they are trying for a kid and its socially ok even thought they are basically telling everyone they are fucking raw lol

I have seen it before and it was my ex-girlfriend her friend and my brother and I don't think any of them liked it and I show them because I think it's really good but all their tasting movies is trash so I'm not surprised lol
