Did this little DIY today and this video was very helpful. Thanks for making it!
Nice! I’m glad it helped. Now enjoy the extra 2 HP :)
Excellent! I feel comfortable doing it on my 2015 M4 now because of your video. Thanks!
Nice! Glad it helped
After watching your video I purchased the air filter from the link you posted! Just now finished installing it and it really does make a significant difference! Keep up the awesome videos officially subscribed to the channel!
Mohammad Sharif thanks! And yes I was really surprised to see how much of a difference it makes. From the outside it does make a bit of a sound difference too - a nice surprise for sure.
I have have one in my Volvo t6 R and it definitely makes a difference
Agreed!
Installed BMC filters and removed charcoal filters. The car pulls harder from second gear leaving a patch of rubber on the street. Means, rear tires won't last long haha. Again I'm tuned as well so it maybe made a difference. Even if we not making any hp. I don't have to worry about changing the air filter again.
Great mod!!!!!!
Finally got around to swap mine out can’t wait to drive the car.
Awesome!! Did you drive it yet? Noticed any difference ?
Very interesting. I’ll get me one and try it. Thanks for the video bro
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tommy L Garage thank you. I just ordered the filters today, and will see how they sound like in real life lol
Update. After installing those filters. The sound and performance were slightly better. My best 1/4 mile on 100% stock was 12.2 114 mph and 11.9 at 116 mph with the drop in filters. Then I got bm3 stage 1 GTS map and the car went crazy. So my best pass was 11.46 at 121 mph but I was spinning a little because I got ps4s tires lol this S55 is the 2JZ of BMW like no joke.
ali hamzah gonna try them, was a little hesitant due to reviews suggesting they allow dirt through. Did you remove the charcoal as well?
MrJamkev maybe if you drive through the dirt lol and yes I did.
Funniest one yet. :D
Great tutorial Tommy. Any downside to removing the charcoal filters? I ask because Bryan in his Kies video doesn’t remove then when he installs the K&N filters. Thanks!
no downside..only upside!
What happens if you KEEP the stock AIR filter and remove Charcoal filters? I assume more air sucking in?
I personally hate knn filters-, I always went with BMC. Still debating....
Yes. You can but it won’t make any noticeable difference.
I’ve been happy with k&n. Although now I’ve got a Dinan CAI kit and I’m happy
Going to orden mines 😃
Did you have any issues on the passenger intake box after installing the charge pipes? I went back to oem intakes and it the passenger side it doesn’t fit perfect as the driver side..
None at all. Check how it fits against the charge pipes.
If you remove the engine cover your coil packs and engine compartment plastics will last longer.
As heat soak kills these components.
Also open the hood after shut down and it will get the residual heat out of the engine and heat ur garage.
I heard that too. I might try it
Hey man, great video. Quick question would this void any warranty ? I know on one of your videos you mentioned you will only do things that will not void warranty..
Omer Duli hi. Thanks for the note and I’m glad you’re an attentive listener! :). I spoke with my service guy and he said these would not void the warranty. Also k&n themselves say their drop in filters don’t void the warranty. Worse they can do is damage the MAF and if the dealer refuses to fix them I’d just do it myself
Tommy L Garage - thx for the reply, I ended up doing it yesterday .. the silly pins that hold the cover was the only thing that gave me a headache.. otherwise thank you for posting the video, very informative...
Was there a difference in performance between the K&N filters and the full intake replacement you did?
This one is better. Less noise but more true cold air feed
ok thanks bro, so I can still get my g 37s tune with the k&n filter , and see gains
Oh for sure! You’ll be very happy
I didn't think you had to remove the rubber pieces over the brace? Shouldn't it just slide forward?
You can do it both ways - either is fine. Thanks for watching Chris!
Tommy some ppl are saying that the K&N filter can mess up your MAF and car. Any issues?
None at all. Although I am now running a Dinan system
Do you maybe have some tabele for screws in M3? For rims for example?
Say it again ?
Yo Tommy, I checked the torque specs on those 13mm bolts...it’s 10-12 ft-lbs...
mymotorcave ahh good thanks! I just did it today for my secret project. Used your specs. Much appreciated !
also .. at 8:40 .. you left your turn signal on. I do that ALL the time in my M4 - drives me nuts.
Scott Meridew gotta love that self-returning stalk!! 2018 cars dropped it. They have a normal turn signal stalk now
what you recommend the short ram, or drop in , for the tune
I spoke with a famous tuner. He said not to bother with ram. He said oem with drop in filters are more than enough
I just received my filters and they are all oily. Is that ok for the engine?
Yes that’s fine.
what u recommend k&n drop in filter or a short ram intake
Drop in. That’s all you need.
It will loose hp but little better response tho. I’ve done k&n but took it off now. Stock air filter is the best
I like my Dinan now
I do hear the turbo whistling a bit more.
RicePattySamwich Meh agreed. Kind of nice and subtle.
Can I replace it with stock intake? And is bad for the car with the charcoal filter removed?
Yes you will be fine and zero issues
Tommy L Garage thanks, damn, your channel literally has everything!
Hello. How much nm do you need for Strut brace?
I usually go by “what feels right” torque on the brace :)
It’s the first mod I do on any new BMW, since my E36 M3 back in 1995. It reduces hp at low rpm, no impact at mid rpm but at higher rpms it does increase hp and it also improves throttle response. If you ve got an ///M car, you re not driving at low or mid rpm, and you re racing in dirt roads, so the K&N or BMC is a no brainer. The urban myth of messing up your MAF sensor has been busted decades ago. Unless you oil the filter when drunk and stoned, there is no splattering if oil and such. Therefore OEM drop in filters such as BMC, K&N are good value. Full intake kits are slightly better but not a good value.
Well said!!
Headphone users beware 😂
Sorry!!!!
Damm,too late🤯
thank u
Anytime !
Will u pass emissions with the charcoal filters out?
daniel morales jr no issues at all. You’ll be fine
Tommy L Garage good deal car looks great man good vids I’ll subscribe to see the progress!
Well thank you! I hope you’re enjoying my humble channel :)
A particulate filter tez wyciągnąłeś ? Ten mały szary
Tak jak najbardziej co prawda auta europejskie tego nie mają ale moje pochodzi z USA i miało filtry węglowe. Dzieki za wskazówkę
Still enjoying the air filters?
forgot you got dinan intakes.. oops!
Haha yup. But there’s no difference. They’re all the same
Tommy L Garage torn between getting an agency power b58 short ram air intake or the drop in filter.... I know performance will be minimal but how much difference in sound was there between your CAI and Drop In filter ?
I wanted to get my car tune
Torque spec for 13mm is lower than you describe? I think you meant to say newton meters f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1014235
ilovestupidlaws ahh nice catch!! Thanks
Keep in mind that the K&N or any reusable air filter does NOT filter the air as good as the OEM replacement types. So, in dusty conditions, it is highly likely the turbos will get coated with dust/dirt and eventually get ruined. In many cases a pre-filter is used with these reusable oiled filters. Which...then help with the poor filtering characteristics of the reusable types. There are more negative with drop-in reusable, but you get the idea. IMHO...if you are NOT tuned, then keep the original OEM type filters. Especially if you have a turbo vehicle. Merci
I switched it out. I now run Dinan intakes
Yep - and not only that, but with these being housed and so many parts needing to be removed to access them, I'd hate to have to go through Tommy's process just to re-oil the filters :( On my old E36 M3 I used an ECIS CAIS with the simple cone filter, fully exposed and easy to service.
What year is your M4/M3?
2017
You are so wise with your money 💰
I had $90 burning a hole in my pocket yesterday and bought these filters with your recommendation. No heat, electric or food for me 👎🏼 High flow air filter 👍🏼 #tomlawrowski #WWTLD
Who needs heat when you have horsepower!
No men The sport filter is the cheapest way to get some power
ما القصة؟ Agreed. And you do feel it too!
Hello Tommy, do you have any opinions on a stage 2 m4 for csf cooling products? I cant seem to find any positive reviews or tests for csf cooling kit.
Thnx
Just go with downpipe if you need stage 2. These cars cool very well from factory.
Tommy L Garage thanks i have stage 2 with dp, bm3, and intake now, altho i had a great deal on a csf 3 piece kit.
You totally broke your microphone.
Haha maybe. I Will have to try it again
torque is 21.0 Nm?
Yes
The K&n work for me.
Same
@@TommyLGarage spoken to a few different suppliers. They all say that the stock intakes are fine. One lad is running 800bhp with stock intakes with K&n filters.
dude, go get a t25 bit for your drill and cut the time in half ... lol
Scott Meridew haha very true. And here I went and bought a set of manual torx drivers lol
Hey are selling your the drop in K&N filter for your M3 I would like to buy them
Not swelling them at the moment. Sorry
Halle my friend. Very important is with this oil filter: After cleaning oil only a little, otherwise it pulls the oil into the intake tract, which many do wrong. Greetings Elisabeth. Thanks for your videos. I like your enthusiasm!
Thanks Elisabeth! Good info. I think I will just buy new filters when these get dirty. Don’t wanna risk anything.
:-)
hahahaha you destroyed the mic
Haha yup !
Thats way too much work to change the air filter.
Haha totally agreed
very slightly better sound and 2hp for a filter that lets in ~8x more dust and dirt particles into the engine than the standard filter... not worth it at all kids. Put a flashlight up to that k&n filter and get real close to it and you can see holes the size of a the tip of ball point pen all over that filter, you want to let particles that size into your engine then go right ahead.
I like to live dangerously
Nice hat - lol
Rob Edwards haha well thank you! XGames was super fun
LOOOOL!!!
Bad video I know
MY EARS!!
My nose !
