- The Backscatter is often criticized for being "too gimmicky" or "stock but worse." But I disagree - you've just got to put your thinking cap on to get full use out of this thing. So my goal was to go into Casual with a Backscatter and no plan and attempt to find the dumbest possible strategy with this thing as I go. And honestly, I'd say I did a pretty good job considering I had no idea what I was doing. This was fun to make, so let me know if you like this type of video and I'll probably follow it up with some more weapons. The Scottish Resistance especially is a magnet for weird strats.

The Back Scatter is my main scout primary, because, at worst, it’s just a slightly worse version of a great weapon, and it leads to so many uniquely funny situations. Trickstabbing people as a Scout will never get old.

Exactly. At worst, it's stock with 2 less shells in the mag, but 4 shots is still more than enough to kill most classes. Getting a crazy killstreak with the BS is a testament to how skilled the player is at Scout more than any other weapons in the Scout's arsenal.

@@sethlovric2979 I had that happen even without standing still and in places not exactly on my position (like a bit ahead in a hallway). I thinkthe game is trying to spawn these effects on the position where it's supposed to (a player jumping into the water or on someone who just died) but it glitches out and just does it wherever

Lately I’ve been using a bunch weapons that I haven’t used much, and the Back Scatter has quickly become one of my favorites
the Backscatter is one of my favourite weapons in tf2 (only beaten by the Air Strike, Axtinguisher, Detonator and Syringe Gun) because of 3 things:
1. the dopamine from insta-killing a light class with 141 damage
2. the times where I accidentally pull of a backscatter trickstab
3. people always exaggerating how bad it is, which only makes me like it more

what does switching weapons as scout even do? He's not exactly a combo class.
The problem with the Back Scatter is that it only has an advantage over stock at basically point blank range from the back, and on par at medium range from behind. Everywhere else it is strictly worse and you have two less shots. For everyone else above 125 HP, it doesn't meaningfully reduce the number of shots to take someone down. I think a RoF boost might be a bit more appropriate, to try to get a bigger advantage out when you successfully flank someone.
Nah, I think it should do 150 damage on back. Then it would be a good medic take down weapon.

One of my favourite things to do when making maps is not removing collision on various environmental stuff simply because I think it's funny to have players be in places they shouldn't be, there's a weird charm to such a reward.

Reward players for being in completely dumb spots by letting them be in completely dumb spots. If the enemy has no clue you're there, you've succeeded.

Idea to make this thing better: 3 rounds in a clip, but it mini-crits from the back and sides (or just gets crits on back). It still keeps its 2 shot niche of picking off targets but the source spaghetti gets reduced since even if you shoot the back but hit the sides with some pellets, you still get mini crits.
yeah but that's not as fun. you don't get that satisfying "mini-crit!" with a 130+ damage meatshot.

The Back Scatter is a community-created primary weapon for the Scout. It is a short, slightly-modified lever-action shotgun with wooden grips, a single barrel, and two small shell drums on the sides.
Nearby enemies within a range of around 500 Hammer units (roughly 31 feet or 9.5 meters) are dealt mini-crits damage when shot from behind with the Back Scatter. As a trade-off, it sports 34% fewer rounds per clip (leaving 4 shots before needing to reload), a 20% greater bullet spread, and an inability to deal random critical hits.

People really underestimate the back scatter, just because some youtuber said so. But actually this game is pretty decent, because of one simple thing about tf2 players
they *never* turn around

or react to almost any damge, for that matter
me hitting an enemy who is focusing down my team with a 8 damage hit and them instantly flicking behind just to mow me down
me missing an enemy who is heading to the frontlines with 3 loud obvious shots and them still not turning around just for me to hit 1 random crit

I love the backscatter since when a enemy is low on health they turn there back to get a health pack and then is your chance to shoot them with a mini crit so they die instantly! So when your enemy gets in a fight with you when you have the backscatter equipped they can't exit the fight!

It gives you like 20 seconds of leeway between medic and heavy death. Murder med, run away, hope the heavy has the object permanence of a cat.

Back Scatter is my favourite Scout primary as well, to the point where I got myself a collector's one
In completing said collector's kit, I managed to get myself a level 69 Back Scatter which I then so named "The Ass Blaster"

It’s a custom hitsound
It's a custom hitsound I use in-game. I pulled the sound byte from the files of Fire Emblem: The Immortal Sword (runs on the Windows FE engine) but I'm sure rips exist too. The crit sound also works on sv_pure 0 servers, which makes it much cooler imo
I love the tf2 weapons that reward situational minicrits or full crits; backscatter, flare gun, Neon Annihilator, Holiday Punch, loose cannon double donks, and my absolute favorite, the reserve shooter. These are all very gimmicky, but the rush of dopamine when you can pull off big kills with these is amazing

I have never understood the back scatter hate. It’s really not that bad, and it’s a fun mix-up for when you’re bored with stock. Been using the back scatter a lot since I started playing way back in 2016, and I gotta admit, it’s my favorite Scout primary.
It's my fav too, right up there with The Shortstop. The amount of salt those weapons harvest is enough for Scout to resell and buy his own private island.

there is a place in the 2fort sewers near the stairs from the base to the sewer. In fact, 2fort is also the most broken map... Especially red base. Red has some seriously busted spots.

I have a funny gimmick with scout; baby face blaster, mad milk, and and melee weapon of choice ( I use fish because kill feed funny ) you can get your boost when using your melee to confuse the enemy because you're running 8 billion miles per hour and mad milk to keep yourself alive

I've mained the Back Scatter so I can confirm that there are only 3 downsides. 2 of them are already on the label: -2 Clip Size & No Random Crits. While the 3rd downside is more of a neutral scale that sometimes tips into the negative, and that is that it shares the back-stab mechanics where it sometimes doesn't count as a back-scatter because your target turned their hitbox in a random direction for a single frame.
I intentionally didn't include the increased spread because it feels like at worst it does not matter at all; you're always looking to meatshot as scout anyway so you're not far away enough for the accuracy to matter, but even if you've pulled the trigger early before you could close the distance on your enemy, the spread just helps you guarantee a hit even if it is just a scratch of damage.

The problem with the back scatter is the wonky hitreg with any "backstab" weapon in the game. Youll shoot someone square in the back and never get crits, and sometimes youll shoot someone in the face and you will get them

I like the backscatter more than stock simply for the fact that it's less accurate, it makes hitting shots at close ranges a LOT easier for scoutlets like me. All the other scatterguns that were easier to use or had different playstyles than stock unfortunately got nerfed over the years into being borderline unusable (shortstop is crap now and Force-a-nature is only good with random bullet spread enabled, otherwise you have to angle your shots rly weirdly because the right side of the spread has more pellets with bullet spread disabled than the left side for whatever god damn reason)

I find that most people who write off the gun forget mini-crits don't have fall off, same as regular Crits.
Like, there are definitely still a lot of situations where the scattergun is better, but having more range when flanking is a genuine advantage.
