    The tighter focal on RF lens is very likely due to the distortion correction or breathing correction in the camera as the sigma doesn't have any supported lens correction from canon.

    The way I was taught, parfocal is the idea that you zoom in, focus, and then can zoom out and things will remain in focus, but not necessary that it works the other way around, like you tried. I wish I had a lens that was, then I'd go try it right now.

  • @OnIcePerspectives
    @OnIcePerspectives Před 4 měsíci +2

    Lol, the reason the 24-105 seems tighter than your other lenses, is because it’s longer! So the front element is literally sticking out further and is thus closer to the foreground objects you placed there. Perspective is determined by the front of the lens, not where the camera/sensor is. So if you’re backed into a wall, that matters, but it’s still capturing a 24mm field of view from the perspectives of the front of the lens.

  • @ErikNaso
    @ErikNaso Před 5 měsíci +38

    Nice review. To hold focus, you need to zoom all the way to the subject and focus. When you pull out, it holds focus. This is how parfocal cinema zooms and ENG lenses work. No parfocal lens will work the other way around. Cheers!

      For those wanting a simplified optic explanation, the shorter the lens focal length, the longer the DOF; the longer the lens focal length, the shallower the DOF. Therefore, you want to set your focus zoomed in (so it's more precise due to a shallower DOF) and then zooming out should remain in focus in a parfocal lens, as your DOF only gets wider at both ends from this critical focus area when zooming out. Setting your focus when you're zoomed out (and a larger DOF) does not guarantee that zooming in will remain in focus because the area that appeared to be in focus may fall just outside of your focal plane as you squeeze your DOF when zooming in.

      With 'electronic par focal' throw away what you (correctly) know from ENG glass. The poster shows that it doesnt hold focus through the zoom range. End of. He is not doing anything wrong he is using his lens and it is failing to hold focus. That is a fail of the lens/firmware not him.

    Loved hearing your perspective on this lens. I'm not primarily a video shooter, but we do about 30-40% video work at the marketing agency I work for. There are some limitations of this lens, but the "one and almost done" description is truly a perfect way to talk about this one. I can absolutely say that it's the one lens I know for a fact I pack on every job now. Be it photography or video, this immediately became my primary lens for everything I do. So, in that sense, I have to say that I'm extremely pleased with my ownership.
    One thing I would like to point out about the 24-105 f/2.8 is the potential for the lens to perform POORLY on a RED Komodo. I don't know how RED has been with support for Canon lens profiles in camera, but this lens relies HEAVILY on distortion correction and that "electronically parfocal" feature works brilliantly on my R3/R5/R6II bodies - much more convincingly than your C70 demonstrated in this video. I imagine it will struggle on the Komodo without proper support for it. Distortions in the 24-35mm range are severe. With the Super-35 crop, the mechanical vignette shouldn't be a problem, but the distortions are great enough that straight lines will still be impacted inside the smaller FOV. I had to tell a friend to hold off or rent one because I'm just not sure how it will perform on that camera. Almost like Canon designed this lens to only work on Canon cameras....hmmmmmmm. haha jk

    I've been very interested in this lens. My current setup is C70 + Speedbooster + EF 24-105 f4, which on the Speedbooster is f2.8 so I'm unsure what features I'd get for my money. Parfocal was a point of difference but your video confirmed that's not really a thing. To me, I see big price tag, loose wider end, longer and heavier (I travel a lot for work). The aperture dial sounds nice but

    So what I found out is that the lens is very wide but at the wide end on full frame you can see some of the lens from the inside. It might not actually cover the entire sensor because in lightroom when you disable lens distortion correction you can see a bit more and in a few shots I believe I saw heavy vignetting or parts of the lens on the corners.

    Thank you for roominating on this very question, as a KX user I too have been wondering if I’d miss having a “real” 24mm FoV but I also know that the 35mm basically lives on my R5 AND my KX because I love the focal compression of 35mm. And it has basically been enough.
    I also know that more often than not, I’m finding myself wishing I had a little more zoom than a little more wide. So I guess, between your video and this comment, I’ve answered my own question. But all this talk has helped me turn down my hype level i’ve been dealing with over this lens. 😅

    Awesome review and will definitely be buying this lens very soon (and in preparation for the full frame RF cine camera that MUST be coming soon... right)?
    One note: For the tighter 24mm FoV on some shots and not others, that looks exactly like the amount of crop that would be applied if you have the digital stabilization enabled on the C70. That might be the cause.

    I know these "impossible" modern lenses like this rf24-105 2.8 and rf28-70 f2 (as well as many many others) all rely on in camera corrections to produce an image. Is that is what is causing the difference in crop on the Sigma vs Canon at 24mm? Would be interested to see your results if you turn off in camera corrections?

    For parfocal tests you should zoom in, get critical focus on an element, zoom out - if that element is still in focus when you've set focus and zoomed out and / or back in then it's parfocal equivalent (or as canon's marketing term implies "electronically parfocal")

    3:28 with complex lens design(internal/external zoom/ floating elements etc), unless manufacturer starts to label it, it is impossible to tell exactly where does the fov vertex starts. But judging by the length of the 24-105, it is much further away from the camera body which is why you see the FOV seems narrower.

  • @matadormartin
    @matadormartin Před 5 měsíci

    Thanks for this I've been waiting for some impartial usage based info on using this lens on the C70. It is that wide end that is giving me pause. I've been using the CN-E 18-80 adapted on a few doc shoots and really liking it. Very similar size and weight to this but it is f4 of course but you do get 18 at the wide end which would make it a one and done lens BUT it is slower...gah, always a trade off. The quality is better than all the EF stills lenses I've used though. This new 24-105 looks great it's just that wide end, but I might be over thinking it when it comes to practical use.

    In regards to 3:13. My guess is canon is having to do some serious digital lens correction to pull off acceptable edge performance for such a fast and long zoom. But having said that, they would have to do less on their crop sensors bodies.

    I'm shooting with sony for several years, but this lense really grabbed my attention. Using the tamron f2-2.8 35-150mm for nearly 2 years now, which is the E-Mount "equivalen" I suppose.
    Great lense, but also prettty heavy with 1.1kg. For photo work this one is a beast, but when I filmed videos where I was closer to ppl / the action I switched to the sigma f2.8 24-70mm because the 35mm are to narrow when filming in a car.
    Really hope that sony makes his own f2.8 24-105mm lense. but I heard that it isn't possible because of the e mount / lense-sensor distance being so short.

    its because focal length is a measurement from the optical center of the lens... this means ALL lenses are potentially wider or tighter to some degree if other factors in the optic are in the way. Thats why wide angle glass is typically smaller( more compact) at say 16mm vs say a long prime at 200mm is larger its a distance thing. Not a measurement of FOV but the actual glass to the focal plane

    This is the review I needed, thank you. Were you using the 24-105 for the Q&A at the end? The focus hunting (eg at 17:25) is something I've been fighting with my C70 since I got it. I have all EF glass, so I'm always on the speedbooster, and I've wondered if RF glass would fix that issue. When we are shooting follow-doc style, I get burned by that focus hunting because there is no "take 2." Frankly, I've found the C70's autofocus to be disappointing - in a particularly egregious way. It works great about 85-90% of the time, just enough to create a false sense of security. But I find those momentary hunting "blips" sneak in and ruin otherwise good shots. For follow-doc I mostly live on the EF 24-105 and DJI RS3. I've had (well lit) scenes where the camera just refused to hold on to a face, no matter what I did. And I've had seated interview shots on sticks where it would decide to hunt in the middle of the shot for no apparent reason. I find this infuriating frankly, and it makes me envious of the guys on Sony's. As a workaround, I've mapped the AF to a button on the front of the camera (under the lens mount) and I can usually get it to find the subject long enough to then turn off AF and hope for the best.
    I'm old enough to be aware that these are first-world-problems, it feels bratty to complain about this mind-blowing technology. Growing up was all manual all the time. The frustrating part for me has been living in this "uncanny valley" of almost perfect, where I can rely on it until the unpredictable second that I can't. Anyway, would appreciate your thoughts on it, and if you've noticed a difference in the AF performance between EF speedboosted and RF lenses.

      That was filmed with a Sigma EF prime lens wide open. Anecdotally I think AF performance ranked best to worst is RF - EF Canon - EF 3rd party, so I was using the least reliable, but each of those is a very subtle step down in my experience.

    I agree with you (I think). If I was on a full-frame camera, this would be a go-to lens. But not on my C70. I need something wider, especially when filming artisans, doctors, and the like. I end up switching between a 15-35 and 24-70, and wishing there was something like the old EF-S 17-55 f2.8 but with an RF mount and L-level construction. Back in the C300mk1 days, many of us got good work done with that lens (despite its mediocre construction and other limitations). When I asked a couple people at Canon why they didn't offer an "L-level" version of that lens, they both said that the lens division wouldn't make an L lens for APS-C cameras. Sigh. I hope that's no longer the case. There's the Canon CN-E 18-80 T4.4, and the Fujinon MK 18-55 T2.9, both of which I've used (and basically liked). But I REALLY want Canon to release (or allow Sigma, Tamron, et al to release) a lens that's f2.8, at least 18mm wide, reaches to at least 70mm, and has good autofocus (and isn't priced over US$10K like a true cine zoom). I tell ya: The lack of such a lens is one of the things that keeps me looking at Sony and wondering.... Thanks for working with this lens and sharing your thoughts.

      Totally agree. I still consider my happiest filming days to be on my C100 and 17-55 f2.8 before I got greedy. I got loads done with that combo and it was a profitable time in terms of early freelancing.

    Could the field of view difference be because the RF 24-105 2.8 is physically longer than the sigma 24 prime? Just an idea but maybe it’s because the RF lens sticks out more so it’s closer to the subject ending up in less field of view. Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts!

    Background compression shifts when perspective shifts - i.e. when you physically move closer or further away from a subject. This does not have anything to do with focal length or FOV. So it's interesting to me that the perspective *does* change when you swap lenses, which makes me think something is happening optically under the hood that effectively emulates moving physically closer to the subject without moving the camera body/sensor plane. Unless you did accidentally move the camera a smidge closer when you swapped lenses, which could also explain it. ;)

    • @carpentrydrawingwmf8422
      @carpentrydrawingwmf8422 Před 4 měsíci

      I think one lens is longer than the other, that's way there's a perspective shift. Thats also why seems there is comparative change in the "wideness" of the lens when the objects are close up ( for example the footage of the two lenses in the room) but there is little difference between the comparison of the lenses in the urban scene. It seems to be that the lens length places the objects closer to the long lens is the first comparison but in the second comparison the relative distance is small.

    finally dude.... :D was waiting for your review on this lens..
    Im working on optimizing my setup from 1x c70 + 1xR5c+ 1xR3 to getting another C70 to get same image A and B cam.
    EF L series lenses.. 70-200 2.8 + 16-35 F2.8 + 24mm F1,4 + 50mm..
    Small rig cages on both C70´s and 2x Rapid 75 tripods from Sirui.. 3 Avenger turtle base C - stands in a rolling bag from avenger and aputure lights galore.. sound equiptment and tentacle timecode + recorders.. and bla bla bla..
    But damn how I would just freaking love to have an actual lens with that range (24-105 f2.8) with an EF mount.... or to have canon make a speedbooster that is RF to RF :P
    I hate that part så damn much... Canon should make a 15-65mm f2.8 :P pretty please... still focused around video with declicked aputure and all..
    But I mean we will soon see the R1 and a new full frame C500 mark 3 with ND and RF mount..and the RED lineup has just given us Global shutter X cameras now..
    Canon has to soon come out with just a match to the sony FX 3 and FX 6 regarding to sensor size.
    At least when they make that lens I think.

      They definitely would work well together! I mention at some point how the Sigma 24 speedboosted is my go-to wide. It's much cheaper and faster than the 15-35. When it comes to wides I prefer speed over versatility (unlike a telephoto zoom where it's the opposite), but that's just my taste!

  • @sammorganmoore

    when one 24 is wider than another 24!..
    a) one brand may be telling lies
    b) some stabilisation or lens correction algorithm might be cropping.
    c) a non 'xxx insert title' (parfocal?) lens will change focal length through the focus range. Your 'wide gv' didnt show much difference while your interior tests did. Maybe one of the '24mm' lenses is 24 at infinity and 27mm at 36inches. while the other is 24mm at infinity and 25 at 36inches.
    Trying the XF605 vs my r6 and rf 24-105 the r6 is much tighter until I turned of all stabilisation. My r6 (when all stab is on) is so cropped Im thinking to use a 16-35 instead of a 24-70 for my 'street' work.
    (Ive not tested if 'engage crop mode' is an assignable button.. but that would play big on lens choices)
    With a c70 and RF you loose the speed boost and FOV.. so an EF 24-105 (any brand) is surely better for the C70 than a rf 24-105 2.8 - which would be great on an R5c or R6. (which are not great video cameras.. no nd etc)
    Alll the canons Id 'like' to own C500, C70 dont make best use of this lens. Im may get a C500 used in two years, a rfC500ii not for 5 years.
    Fullframe and 6400 you get narrow dof and low light. So this lens seems to be a kind of undeeded technological marvel if you are shooting on a mirrorles fullframe.
    With a RFC500ii it will be part of the best RnG setup ever!

      Exactly. If the test was re-done with the front elements aligned to the same distance from the subjects (i.e. moving the camera back a few inches with the new lens), the FOV would probably be the same/similar.

    EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 is a very underrated lens, especially on Canon C300 Mark II, it covers UHD but not 4K at the widest on this camera. It’s as sharp as a knife and very quick to focus, effectively an L lens. It’s pretty wide on a Super35 sensor and pretty cheap used. Hope this helps someone. Regards, Charles

      PS With a Parfocal lens you should be able to zoom in tight, lock focus, turn off AF and when zoomed out to wide, it should stay in focus. It will not really work focusing on subject at widest and then zoom in to frame. Parfocal is not used in auto focus. C

    The bottle getting out of focus just has to do with the AI object selection algorithm. All cameras have trouble with that. For us as humans, it’s obvious that the bottle at 24mm is the same bottle at 105, but for the software, it’s not obvious that it’s “the same object”. Way different than face or eye tracking, computers have been trained for years to be able to recognize what’s a face in all different kinds of lighting, angles, and focal lengths.
    Either way you are right, big difference between mechanically parfocal and electronic parfocal.

    Canon can claim its parfocal because canon is okay with being dishonest. haha. AF based parfocal isn't true parfocal. Canon isn't the only company making this claim with AF based parfocal lenses though. Maybe one day the tech will get to a place where its AF based parfocal is seamless enough to not make a difference, but we definitely aren't there yet.
