- This was a 3-day 2-night backpacking trip deep in the heart of the Angeles National Forest. We started at Vincent Gap and then camped at Mine Gulch the first night. On day 2 we hiked from Mine Gulch to Cabin Flat via the Prairie Fork "trail" (bush whacking galore) and then up to Lupine camp for the night. On day 3 we hiked from Lupine camp up to Guffy, and then followed the PCT north through Blue Ridge and Inspiration point to make it back to Vincent Gap to complete the loop. The trip was 26.2 miles with 5450 feet of climbing and took place from July 1st to 3rd, 2023. Note that the original route was to go to from Lupine to Little Fish Fork to Pine Mountain before going to Guffy, but a heat wave hit us with temps at 105 degrees. Check out Robert's video from this trip here: • FORGOTTEN TRAIL OF SAN...
One hell of a loop you and Robert did! Thanks for taking us along to see some of those sites.
Sure thing. The hardest part of this 26 mile loop was the 2 miles between Mine Gulch and Cabin Flat campground.
That’s such a smart loop!
You two are doing big things!
Tagay!
Thanks Justin. Wish you could have joined us!
That was a crazy amount of bushwhacking!
You can say that again. I've never whacked so much bush in my life! It felt like we were in the Amazon jungle.
Hi David. I'm a friend of Robert. I really enjoyed your video. All that snow last winter really makes it nice with the plants and stuff and the stream flow. I can see that was a hard hike albeit worth it. You guys are bad asses in my book. Peace.
Thanks Jim. It was a hard hike especially the part between Mine Gulch and Cabin Flat. I think I've seen you in some of Robert's videos. Hope to meet you one day. Cheers!
The bushwacking must have been grueling going up to cabin flat. There is no trail .I know the spot.
Damn! You beat me again. Lol
Great job documenting that crazy thru-hiking in some isolated sections of the San Gabriels.
Now I remember how we thought of the chuck wagon and cheeseburgers. Lol
Hopefully next time you’ll bring a summer sleeping bag or quilt. You’ll never know hoe it’s gonna be up in the mountain even during the heatwave.
Tagay!
Thanks Robert. I will never forget to bring a sleeping bag and an extra dry pair of socks again. 🤪Tagay!
Wow this looks so interesting and fun. I’m assuming this isn’t for inexperienced hikers?
The one section from Mine Gulch to Cabin Flat is about 2 miles but it took us 6 hours because there was so much bush whacking and not much of a trail. So that section at least is not for inexperienced hikers.
So awesome! Have always been interested myself in this territory of the San Gabriels, and have trekked down near the East Fork narrows from Vincent Gulch, but have always been to weary of getting lost going up through the Prairie Fork area. Is there a place where I could find a downloadable GPS for this route?
To get from Mine Gulch to Cabin Flat all you really have to do is follow the Prairie Fork creek upstream for about 2 miles. But be warned it is a lot of bushwhacking!
